Chapter 4: The Secret We Adore I
Kate POV
"I want to see Mr. Blackwood," I insisted, my frustration evident in my rising voice. "I'm Detective Kate Matthews, and I need to speak with him about an important matter."
The security guard didn't budge, his arms crossed. "Without an appointment, I can't let you in. Mr. Blackwood is very busy."
"I don't care how busy he is. I need to speak with him now. Open the gate, or I'll come back with a warrant and a team of officers."
The security guard sighed. "I'm afraid that's not possible, Detective. Please leave, or I'll have to call for assistance."
"Fine, I've had enough of this!" I exclaimed. "I know Blackwood is hiding something, and I'm going to find out what it is!"
Just as I was about to turn away, the gate swung open, and Lucas Blackwood himself stepped out.
My eyes widened, and for a moment, I forgot my anger. I stared at his chiseled features and piercing eyes.
I shook my head, remembering why I was there. "Well, well, well," I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "The great Lucas Blackwood finally decided to grace me with his presence."
Lucas's expression remained neutral. "Can I help you?" he asked, his voice polite but distant.
I narrowed my eyes. "You know exactly who I am. We've met before, and I know you’re aware of why I'm here."
Lucas raised an eyebrow. "I don't recall our previous encounter, nor do I know what brings you here."
My mind raced with confusion. "Don't play dumb, Mr. Blackwood. I'm not leaving until I get the answers I need."
Lucas's expression remained neutral. "What is it that you want, then?"
"I want to question you about a certain incident."
"What incident would that be?"
I scoffed derisively. "Don't play dumb, Mr. Blackwood. I know you're aware of what I'm talking about."
"I assure you, I have no idea what you're referring to."
"The incident in the woods. The one where I hit you with my car accidentally."
Lucas's face showed confusion. "I don't know what you're talking about, Detective. I have no recollection of any such incident."
My frustration boiled over. "I know it was you. I saw you. And I know what happened."
Lucas remained calm. "I don't recall being in an accident or suffering any injuries."
I narrowed my eyes. "That's not possible. I saw you, Mr. Blackwood. You were barely alive. And now, you're standing here, perfectly fine. What are you hiding?"
Lucas's expression turned cold. "I've told you all I'm going to tell you, Detective. Now, please leave."
"You think you can just dismiss me?" I asked, my eyes flashing with defiance. "Well, I've got news for you, Mr. Blackwood. I don't take kindly to being stonewalled."
"Detective, leave now, or I'll take further action," Lucas's voice was firm, but I stood my ground.
"Further action? Bring it on, Mr. Blackwood. I'm not afraid of you."
"You're barking like a mad woman, Detective," Lucas sneered. "The only thing that will make me talk to you again is a warrant."
"I'll get that warrant, and you'll regret trying to hide the truth from me," I said, my face reddening with anger.
Lucas smiled coldly. "I'm shaking in my boots, Detective. But until then, good day."
He slammed the gate shut in my face, leaving me fuming and determined to get that warrant.
I stood there, frozen with anger and frustration. I took a deep breath, clenched my fists, and spun on my heel, stalking back to my car.
I drove to the police station, my mind racing with thoughts of Lucas Blackwood. Captain Jenkins, my boss, was waiting for me in his office.
"Detective Matthews, what's going on?" he demanded. "I just received a call from Lucas Blackwood, complaining about your conduct at his estate."
My eyes widened. "He's trying to cover his tracks, sir. I'm telling you, he's hiding something."
Captain Jenkins was unmoved. "Kate, you need to follow procedure. No more unauthorized visits to Blackwood's estate. Do I make myself clear?"
I bit back my retort. "Yes, sir," I muttered.
"Alright, Detective, you can leave. But remember, no more unauthorized visits," Captain Jenkins said sternly.
I nodded, still fuming. "Yes, sir," I muttered, gathering my things and leaving the office.
As I walked out of the station, I was already thinking about my next move. I couldn't let Lucas Blackwood get away with whatever he was hiding. But for now, I had to play by the book.
Just as I was about to close my car door, Detective Jack came running up to me.
"Kate, wait up! I've got something," he said, out of breath.
"What is it?" I asked.
Jack held up his phone, showing me pictures and documents. "I've been digging into the case files, and I think I've found a connection. All the victims were attacked during a full moon."
My eyes widened. "What are you saying, Jack?"
Jack's expression was serious. "I've been researching folklore and mythology, and there are stories about shape-shifters and werewolves. What if there's truth to it?"
I raised an eyebrow. "You're really buying into this werewolf stuff? Come on, Jack, we're detectives, not monster hunters."
"The evidence points to something supernatural," Jack insisted. "The victims' bodies were torn apart. No human could do that. And what about the eyewitness accounts of a creature with glowing eyes and razor-sharp claws?"
I shook my head. "You're serious about this?"
Jack nodded. "Dead serious."
Just then, we heard a distress call: "Units in the vicinity, we have a 911 call reporting a violent attack in progress at 345 Maple Street. Witnesses describe a large, hairy creature with glowing eyes... Oh God, it's breaking through the door! PLEASE HURRY!"
Jack and I exchanged a tense glance.
"Looks like our case just got a whole lot hairier," Jack said, his hand on the door handle.
