Chapter 5: Consequences of Saving a Life "This can't be happening," Kate muttered, scanning the c*****e around her. "I thought you said full moon, Jack? This is something else entirely." Jack's expression was grim, his gun drawn. "I know, Kate. I've never seen anything like this either. But we need to move, now." As they gave chase, the creatures seemed to be leading them deeper into the woods. Kate's heart raced with every step, her gun firing off rounds that had no effect on the monsters. "What are we dealing with, Jack? Bullets aren't working!" "I don't know, Kate! Just keep firing and try to keep up!" The creatures were impossibly fast, and Kate's lungs burned as she struggled to keep pace. "We need to get out of here, now!" Jack yelled, grabbing her arm and trying to pull her away. But she fell, and Jack didn't wait. He left her there to save himself. "Jack, no! Wait!" Kate screamed, her voice echoing through the woods. But her legs felt heavy, rooted to the spot. She watched in horror as Jack disappeared into the darkness, leaving her alone and surrounded by the creatures. They kept coming, their eyes fixed on her with an intensity. Fully transformed now, they were werewolves. Jack had been right all along. Their bodies were a twisted mix of human and beast, their muscles rippling beneath their fur. Their eyes glowed with an otherworldly light, their teeth stained with blood. Kate's heart raced with fear as she realized she was surrounded. She tried to run, but her legs wouldn't move. The werewolves closed in, their hot breath washing over her, making her skin crawl. She was trapped. The werewolves were going to kill her, just like they had killed all the others. Kate's mind raced as she thought of Jack, wondering if he had made it out alive. And then, a werewolf appeared, its fur sleek black, its eyes gleaming with fierce intensity. Without hesitation, it charged at the others, its movements swift and deadly. The other werewolves snarled and snapped, but the black one fought with precision and power. Kate watched in amazement as the black werewolf took down the others. A werewolf, fighting to protect her? As the last of the other werewolves fell, the black werewolf turned to her. She froze, unsure of what to do next. Would this werewolf turn on her now, or continue to protect her? She was scared but decided to speak, her voice shaking. "What do you want? Why kill humans? Are you really werewolves?" The black werewolf didn't respond. Instead, it scooped her up in its powerful arms, carrying her effortlessly through the forest. Kate's heart raced as she was borne away, unsure of what fate awaited her. Then, just as suddenly, the werewolf stopped and gently set her down in a small clearing. Kate looked around, disoriented. The werewolf had vanished into the trees, leaving her shaken but unharmed. As she caught her breath and tried to process what had just happened, she realized that the werewolf had somehow conveyed a sense of safety, as if it had protected her from some greater danger. But why? And what did it want from her? The questions swirled in her mind as she stood there, frozen with fear. *** "Where are you coming from?" Alex asked Lucas angrily. "Mind your business. I'm not a kid; I'm a self-made billionaire, and I can do whatever I like," Lucas responded, his voice dripping with arrogance. "Interfering with humans?" Alex's voice rose in anger. "What were you thinking when you saved that detective? She was supposed to die because she is bent on finding the truth about you." Lucas's expression darkened. "Get out of my house!" he yelled, his sudden rage catching Alex off guard. Alex's eyes widened in surprise, but he didn't back down. "You're not thinking clearly, Lucas. You're letting your emotions cloud your judgment. That detective is a threat to our existence, and you're making things worse by saving her." Lucas's face twisted in a snarl. "You don't understand anything, Alex. You never have. Just get out before I do something I regret." "Why? Because you saved that detective?" Alex yelled, his voice echoing through the room. "Get out!" Lucas shouted, his anger boiling over. He banged his fist on the wall, the sound reverberating through the air. "Or should I just kill her myself?" Alex sneered, his eyes flashing with malice. Lucas's eyes blazed with fury as he rushed at Alex, pinning him to the wall with a fierce growl. His claws dug into Alex's skin, drawing blood. "You dare threaten her?" Lucas snarled, his hot breath washing over Alex's face. "You dare threaten someone under my protection?" Alex's eyes widened in pain as Lucas's grip tightened. He knew he had gone too far, and Lucas's anger was beyond reason. "What do you mean by protection?" Alex asked, confused, as he pushed Lucas away. Lucas walked to the bar, his movements tense, and poured himself a drink. "Is there something you're not telling me?" Alex asked, his confusion evident. Lucas sipped his drink, his eyes fixed on some point in the distance, before finally speaking. "The detective is my mate," Lucas said, his voice low and intense, making Alex's eyes widen in shock. "Your mate?" Alex repeated, disbelief etched on his face. "You mean, like, your life mate?" Lucas nodded. "Yes. She's the one I'm destined to be with, the one I'm meant to protect and love." Alex's eyes widened further as the implications sank in. "What?" Alex yelled in shock. "How could the goddess mate you with a human? And not just any human, but the one investigating you?" Lucas's expression was unreadable. "I only found out earlier today when she came to interrogate me," Lucas said. Alex's eyes widened in disbelief. "You're bound to a human, a detective who's trying to expose your secrets? What if she finds out what you are? What if she tries to destroy you?" Lucas's gaze snapped back to Alex. Alex shook his head, trying to wrap his mind around the situation. "This is madness, Lucas. She's a human. She can't be your mate." Just then, Victor burst into the room, his face urgent and worried. "Lucas, we have a problem," he said, his voice low and serious. Lucas turned to him, his eyes narrowing. "What is it?" Victor hesitated. "It's the detective. She's going to run a test on the blood of the person who saved her, and we all know that person is you." Alex's eyes widened in alarm. "What kind of test?" Victor's expression was grim. "A DNA test. She's trying to prove that the person who saved her is not human." "How did she get my blood?" Lucas wondered. "She is clever," Lucas's face went white, his eyes flashing with fear. "No," he whispered. "She can't do that." Alex's eyes darted between Victor and Lucas, his mind racing with the implications. "What happens if she finds out the truth?" he asked. Lucas's eyes locked onto Alex, his gaze intense and desperate. "We can't let that happen," he said, his voice low and urgent. "We have to stop her, no matter what it takes." To be continued.
