Relax and enjoy the ride
Serene’s Pov
I was doing it again, watching Kaelon Draven through the glass walls of the conference room like I had no self-control. Technically, I was meant to be reviewing litigation reports, but the documents on my screen might as well have been blank. I had been staring at them for twenty minutes without taking in a single line.
“Focus, Serene,” I muttered under my breath, crossing my legs beneath the desk. Just one glance at him and my whole body reacted in ways I wished it would not. I sighed and tried to look away, but my eyes had a mind of their own.
He stood in front of the whiteboard, sleeves rolled up, explaining something with that calm confidence that always drew people in. The senior partners looked impressed, the junior associates tried to hide their admiration, and I just sat there trying to remember how to breathe. Every time he smiled, something inside me melted.
“Still daydreaming about your office crush?”
I nearly spilled my coffee when Rhea appeared beside me with two steaming cups. She placed one on my desk and gave me that knowing look that only she could pull off.
“I was not staring,” I said quickly, pretending to scroll through my screen. “I was analysing his presentation.”
“Of course you were,” she said, sitting on the corner of my desk. “And by analysing, you mean checking out how his trousers fit?”
“Rhea!” My voice came out higher than intended. “Keep your voice down. Someone might hear you.”
“Who? Kaelon?” She laughed softly. “Please. That man would not notice you if you danced across his desk wearing a crown.”
The words stung more than I wanted them to.
“Thank you for that,” I said, forcing a smile as I took a sip of coffee.
“I am being honest,” she replied, still amused. “You have been hung up on him for a year, maybe more. Has he ever spoken to you outside of work?”
I swallowed hard, remembering how he had stood right beside me in the elevator last week without so much as a glance.
“He will notice me one day,” I said, though even I did not believe it. “He is just... focused.”
“Focused?” Rhea arched a brow. “You will be collecting a pension before he looks your way. Just go talk to him.”
“What? I cannot just walk up to him. What would I even say?”
She let out a sigh and stood. “Then keep staring from a distance. Anyway, I have to leave early. Eron hates waiting.” She winked before walking off, heels clicking against the floor.
I leaned back and watched her go. She had everything I did not, a husband who adored her, a beautiful child, and a life that looked straight out of a dream.
And then there was me. The woman who could conquer legal briefs but not her own heart. No dates, no romance, just long nights and foolish fantasies about a man who probably did not know my name.
It had been too long since anyone made me feel wanted. Too long since I felt something real. What I needed was not another late-night fantasy, but a spark, someone like Kaelon.
I turned back to my screen with a sigh, watching the cursor blink like it was mocking me. Rhea was right. Something had to change. I just did not know how to start.
By the time I packed up and left the office, my body ached with exhaustion. Yet even as I stepped into the quiet night, my thoughts stayed with him, the man who did not even know he was the reason I could not sleep.
Nola was stretched out on the couch, her phone glowing in her hand when I walked in. She looked up, smirking. “Another day of staring at Mr. Handsome?”
I dropped my bag and sank beside her with a groan. “You already know the answer.”
She laughed, shaking her head. “You have got it bad, Seren. You need a distraction. There is a concert tonight, and you are coming with me. We will dance, have a few drinks, and find you someone who actually looks your way.”
I hesitated, thinking about it. The idea sounded better than another lonely night spent replaying Kaelon’s smile in my head. It was the weekend, and I could use a break. “Fine,” I said at last. “Let us go.”
After a long shower and a wardrobe disaster that took far too long, I finally settled on a short skirt and my favourite high-heeled boots. Nola looked flawless, as always, her confidence lighting up the room. Three hours later, we stepped into a sea of music and movement. The concert grounds pulsed with sound, people swaying together beneath flashing lights.
“Loosen up!” Nola shouted over the music, pushing a drink into my hand. “Come on, Seren! Look around. Not a single Kaelon in sight!”
I forced a smile and took a sip, but even with the heavy bass vibrating through the ground, I could not stop thinking about him. My mind kept wandering, imagining his breath near my ear, his hands tracing a path down my skin.
Nola’s excited scream snapped me back. “Oh my God, the drummer just looked at me!” She grabbed my arm. “I am going closer!”
“Nola, wait!” I called after her, but she was already lost in the crowd.
I sighed and looked around, clutching my drink. Maybe I should have stayed home. The crowd pressed in from all sides, lights flashing in every colour. It was too loud, too crowded, and I already missed the comfort of silence.
I tried to make my way through the people, but it was impossible. The crowd moved like one Serening thing, bodies pressed together in rhythm. I gave up struggling and decided to stand still, waiting for things to calm down.
After a few songs, the energy caught me. The rhythm seeped into me until I found myself moving with it, my body relaxing at last. For a moment, I forgot about everything else, until I felt a hand against me.
I froze, startled, and told myself it had to be an accident. There were people everywhere, bumping into one another. I forced myself to keep dancing. Then it happened again, slower this time. The touch lingered, firm and intentional.
I tried to turn around, to see who it was, but there was barely any room to move. Then a man’s voice brushed close to my ear.
“Relax and enjoy the ride, Seren.”
My heart slammed against my ribs. He knew my name.
