Chapter One
Cat watched the microwave count down, hoping an evening of cheesy horror movies would help Evelyn forget the nightmares plaguing her since the end of summer. Although she’d agreed to Cat’s last-minute invitation to watch old Halloween movies, it was clear her best friend had been humouring her.
The shrill, insistent beeping of the microwave brought Cat back to the present.
Carefully removing the steaming bag, she placed it on the counter and popped her head around the corner. “Do you want seasoning?” she yelled into the living room.
Evelyn sat up, remote in hand, and shrugged. “Sure, whatever.”
Her weak attempt at a smile faded almost the moment it appeared, so Cat forced one of her own. “All right, cheese it is.”
After doctoring the popcorn to her liking, Cat brought the
