1. The green house
*prologue*  It had been a long day and yawned as I drove up to the house. Something felt wrong as I stepped out of the car but shook it of and walked upstairs. I opened the door and saw boxes everywhere. “Babe” I yelled but there was no one to answer me. Quickly I looked through the house and noticed that all of her things were gone. She was gone. I slammed the door behind me and walked to the main house. She was there talking to my parents.  “What’s going on” I yelled and shocked she looked around. I couldn’t believe the look on her face and was taken back by it for a moment. So much sorrow and yess some fear as well, fear for me. She said something to my parent and then bolted to her car. She looked at me for one last time and drove of. “What is the meaning of this” I demanded to know.  “She wasn’t right for you Jason, just let her go” my mom said a pained look in her eyes.  “How can you say that. We love each other” I screamed at them. “Do you son, do you really love her like there's no one ever who can compare to her” my father asked, his voice steady and confident. He looked straight into my eyes and took my mother's hand. He had I realized and I did not. I looked to where her car had drove off to. Suddenly an anger I did not recognized came over me. They didn’t get to decide if she was right for me and she could not leave me like this. I looked at them again and almost growled at them. “Maybe not but that’s no reason for leaving it like this.”  I started running even before ending my sentence, jumped in the car and with screaming tires drove after her. If I just go fast enough maybe I could catch up to her. What was I going to say? Would she even talk to me? We could work things out, couldn’t we? I never hurt her but I had to admit to myself she also wasn’t my sole focus. I probably loved myself more than I did her and with that realisation I slowed down a little. Car lights blinded me and everything changed. I didn’t think, I just reacted but it was already to late.  *end prologue* “I know I don’t have much to spent but there has to be something better than this” I ask the real estate agent who was helping me and gave back a brochure of a small and moldy apartment.  “I’m sorry maya, the market is what it is. For your budget you just don’t get the luxury you seem to want” she says while collecting all the brochures and stacking them on the edge of her desk. “Are you sure you can’t spent more? With just 50 a month more I can give you some other option” she continued with a smile that, I didn’t think was sincere.  “I wish I could but if I did that you will have your listing back in just a few months. I will think about the last one you showed me and if you could call me if anything else comes across your desk. I will be very grateful” I said and stood up from the uncomfortable chair I had been sitting in. She promised she would and we said our goodbyes as her assistant came walking in.  “You won’t believe this tessa o'connell called just now about the greenhouse. She wants a new apartment ASAP, her words” the assistent started ranting. The rest of the conversation got lost, as I opened the front door and the outside noise overpowered their voices. The rays of the of the late october sun hit my face and I let out a deep sigh. It was not like I was without a roof above my head but living with my aunt and sleeping on her pull out sofa had not been ideal. I came to the city over a month ago and have been searching ever since. But with only a part time waitressing job and seeing that the city was more expencing than I had thought, it had been a challenge.  I had just step outside when the assistant called my name, “Miss Chase, could you come back in pleas. We might have something for you”. A couple of minutes later I was back in the uncomfortable chair of miss Dovers office and she began explaining about an unusual listing that just became available.  “So this is a bit of a weird one, it’s a one bedroom apartment above a garage from one of the old house on the edge of town. The older couple living there is renting it out at a lower cost but there is a condition. The tenant has to help out around the house, a sort of live in help situation. Here is a brochure“ she said and gave me a folder with a picture of a beautiful apartment. “the price and a list of what is recruited of you is inside.”  I looked over the pictures and was surprised that the cost was even lower than the other listing she had been showing me, some of whom were not even half as nice as this one. The list was on the last page but there was hardly anything on it, some grocery shopping, driving them around and light housework. Before I could say anything miss Dover took my hand.  “You should think about it before you agree to this, there is something not quite right about that apartment. I have rented it out five times already and I’ve only gotten the listing in the beginning of the year.” I looked over it again and looked back up.  “Are you kidding me, this seems perfect. I do almost all of this for my aunt now. What is so difficult about this?” I asked her.  “It’s not the work or the couple, they seem very kind. They are actually quite upset by the fact that people keep leaving. That is why you would need to do an interview with them. I don’t really know why it has changed tendons so much. My last client really got spooked living there”. I look at her thinking she made a yoke but she was dead serious. Maybe is was too good to be true and just at the right time but i could not let this opportunity slip through my fingers.  “I would like to meet them and see the place in person at least” I said finally.  Three days later I sat next to miss dover as we drove up a narrow road to the Green house. Apparently the public transportation around this part of town was poorly, so she offered to drive to the apartment. As we drove she filled me in on the whole situation. Mr and Mrs Green where an elderly couple in there late seventies. The reason they needed help was because mr Green had fallen ill and there were no relatives to help them out with the big house. Miss Dover thought they should have sold the place and moved to a more fitting accommodation but they were sentimental about the house and refused to do so. There was a nurse who took care of the daily medical treatments. My job would be more of a household assistant to mrs Green. She also told me about the apartments many many traits. You could really tell she loved her work but I could not take it al in.  “There, above the garage is the apartment. Isn’t it lovely. I bet you get amazing natural light through those high windows” she said suddenly as the trees made room for a neatly cut lawn. The road vorked with one leading up to an oval that was in front of the main house. The other led up to two door garage with an extra addition build on top of it. It had three ceiling high windows and the stair on the side of the building let to a balcony where I assumed was the front door. I was eager to get up there but miss Dover took the road to the main house. First I had to meet the owners and get their approval. The door opened as soon as we got out of the car. A young woman stood in the doorway wearing a nurses blouse, behind her was an older woman, mrs Green I assumed. They said their goodbyes as we walked up to the porch.  “I’ll be back at the end of the day” The nurse said to her and then greeted us as she walked past us. I hadn't even noticed the second car that was in the driveway until she got in and drove of. “Good afternoon mrs Green, may I introduce Maya Chase” miss Dover said and I extended my hand for her to shake.  “Very nice to meet you” I said. She didn’t take my hand right away but glanced over me for just a second before taking it. If it hadn’t made me feel self conscious I wouldn’t even been sure it had happen.  “Welcome, my husband is waiting for us in the living room. You will have to excuse him for not meeting you at the door. He is just not as mobile as he used to be.” she said with a most warming voice. We followed her through the hallway to a room on the right side of the house. A old fragile looking man sat next to the lit fireplace looking at the flames dancing in front of him. As we walked in he turned to us, straightened up and gave us a smile that made him look years younger.  “Good afternoon beautiful Ladies, please take a seat” he said charming, miss Dover blushed a little before sitting down. I'll bet he broke many a heart when he was younger with a smile like that and the charisma shining bright like the sun.  “Would you care for something to drink” he asked seemingly unaware of the effect he had on miss Dover.  “A cup of tea would be nice” I said, “if it is not to much trouble.”  “Not at all” he said pointing at a cart filled with drinks and cookies, they were well prepared for our visit. As mrs. Green got our drinks, miss Dover had asked for a coffee, I sat down at the sofa and took in the big but cosy living room. I could feel the heat from the fire on my face and left arm. There were pictures everywhere, mostly old ones I noticed.  “I was a photographer” mr Green said as he saw me looking at them.  “They are beautiful” I said and took the cup of tea mrs Green offered before sitting down with us. We just talked for a while and they asked me all sort of questions. They seemed very interesting in my living situation with my aunt.  “Let’s get down to business” mrs Green suddenly said looking a little concert at her husband. “Yes” miss Dover said remembering why we were here, “ I have told miss Chase about the situation but maybe it is better if you told her what is required from her.” They looked at each other and nodded as if they made a decision in that very second. Mrs Green began explaining the same thing as miss Dover had done in the car, about her husband's illness and that the housework had been weighing heavily on her.  “I understand that you already have a job? Do you think that is going to be a problem?” she asked after listing everything she needed help with. “Yes that right, it's only a part time waitressing job. So I don’t see any problem with that as long as we can be a little flexible because of the hours I make.” I explained. “We prefer a little flexibility so that will be perfect,” mr Green said smiling, “you can take our car, we have little use of it anyway and it will make coming and going here a bit easier.”  “Thank you. That is very nice of you,“ I said, “if i may ask, how many hours a week were you thinking of for the tasks that you described?” I wanted to know thinking about the little time it would leave me to see my aunt Rachel besides of at work ofcourse. “Well, it’s not a normal nine to five job obviously but about 14 hours a week I think. Some week we would need you more than others, I hope that won’t be a problem for you.” mrs Green said. “I think we will make it work.”
