Chapter2

Serena’s POV Thornwood territory scented fresh like rain in the air, and underneath it was like ground that had been worked hard on for generations. It should have made me uneasy but it made my wolf lift her nose in admiration and lean in. I crossed the border at the creek and had barely made it ten minutes into the tree line before I heard a patrol. They were quiet and coordinated, moving in a wide sweep that would have caught most people off guard. But I stopped walking and raised both hands. "Rogue female. Not a threat." I kept my voice steady and clear. "Requesting temporary sanctuary." There was a pause, then two figures emerged from the trees, both were males, built like people who did this for a living. The taller one had a scar along his jaw and eyes that catalogued me in about three seconds flat. "Silver Ridge," he spat. "Former," I replied. Something shifted in his assessment. "You left willingly?" "Yes." "Why?" "I'd rather explain that to whoever's in charge of this territory." He looked at the other patrol wolf and some communication passed between them that didn't need words. Then he nodded. "Rook. Senior patrol. Come with us." He started walking. "Keep your hands where we can see them." "Not my first time requesting asylum," I said. "Is it your second?" he asked, without turning around. "No." "Then it's your first time." He glanced back, and there was the faintest crease at the corner of his mouth that might have been the beginning of a smile, or might have been nothing at all. "Come on." The Thornwood packhouse was nothing like Silver Ridge's. Silver Ridge's packhouse felt like someone's home. It was warm and well-worn with the permanent smell of cooking and the sound of too many people in comfortable proximity. However, Thornwood's packhouse felt like a headquarters. Larger, cleaner, and built with intention rather than accumulated over time. The wolves moving through it were purposeful. Nobody lingered more than necessary. They watched me pass with eyes that were curious but not hostile and that felt like something. Rook put me in a small intake room with two chairs and a desk, told me the Alpha would want to assess me himself, and came back five minutes later with a glass of water. I drank the water without tasting it. My hands were slightly shaking so I pressed them flat against my thighs and advised myself to breathe. ‘Don't fall apart now. Not here. Not in front of strangers.’ My wolf paced inside my chest, not feeling settled or frightened.” And suddenly, the air in the hallway changed. There was a strong shift in the atmosphere, as if the hallway was adjusting to accommodate something larger than itself. It felt like an Alpha. Every wolf in the building must have felt it, that involuntary reorientation toward their leader. Even me, and I wasn't his. He then appeared in the doorway. But Alpha Kael Dravon was not what the rumors had drawn. I'd expected a brutal look in a visible way like a big, aggressive energy, the kind of dominance that announces itself loudly. Instead what I saw was someone calmer but somehow, more unnerving. He was tall and broad through his shoulders, he was dark-haired and slightly disheveled from sleep he clearly had not finished. But it was his composure that landed hardest. He stood in the doorway like a man who had never once needed to fill a room with noise, because the room already knew that he was there. His eyes moved calmly over me, like he was reading something rather than staring at someone. "Serena Voss," he spoke. His voice was low and even. "Silver Ridge." "Former Silver Ridge," I said. "Why?" One word. And somehow it carried more weight than Calder's entire rehearsed speech. "I had reasons," I said. "I'll need more than that." "I know." I held his gaze. "I'll give them to you. But I need to know whether you're going to let me stay before I do." He looked at me for a long, still moment. Then he sat down across from me. Not like he was doing me a favor, but like he'd made a decision and was simply acting on it. "Tell me," he said.
