Blurb

She didn't beg or cry, instead she grabbed a bag and disappeared into the dark.

‘Two years.’

Serena Voss gave Calder two years of her life, her loyalty, and every quiet piece of herself she knew how to give. And in return, he sat on the edge of her bed one full-moon night and told her he'd found his fated mate.

In pain, she left before sunrise and without a plan. All she had was a wolf in her chest full of fire, and twenty miles of dark forest ahead of her.

What she found on the other side of it was the last thing she expected: a pack rebuilt from ruins, a territory on the edge of war, and an Alpha who looked at her like she was a variable he hadn't accounted for.

Alpha Kael Dravon on the other hand, hated warmth. He only liked order and precision. He built Thornwood out of rubble with his bare hands and he will not let anything; not a border dispute nor a pack insurgency, nor even a rogue wolf from Silver Ridge with tier-seven scores and absolutely no respect for his personal space ~ threaten what he's made.

But she is everywhere.

In his training ground, his patrol reports, and his thoughts at 2 AM when the packhouse is quiet and he is supposed to be working.

He swears she's temporary.

She tells herself the same thing.

But they are both wrong.

Chapter1
Serena’s POV The forest never lies. It tells you things people won't. Like the way the wind shifts right before something breaks, or is it the way the trees go still and like they're holding their breath? I had grown up listening to those silences, and indeed knew what they meant. So when the door to my room opened and Calder walked in wearing that face that looked like he was cautious, and already bracing for some clash, the animal part of me already knew before a single word could leave his mouth. My human form just wasn't ready to admit it yet. "Serena." His voice came out low and calculated, like he'd been rehearsing it on the walk over. "We need to talk." I turned from the window. Outside, the moon sat fat and full over the ridge, pouring silver light across the treeline. I'd been standing there for almost an hour, watching it, telling myself he was just running late. Calder was always running late these days. Always somewhere else. Always a little blurred at the edges, like a photograph taken mid-movement. I should have read that too. "Okay," I said. He sat on the edge of the bed, across from me. That distance was deliberate, and I felt it the way one feels a door closing in another room. "I found her," he said. Just that. Two words, and the whole floor of my life dropped out from under me. In our world, her only meant one thing. A wolf's fated mate. The one the Moon Goddess stitched to your soul before you were born, the other half of a bond that nothing chosen or built could ever fully replace. I had known, every day for two years, that Calder hadn't found his mate yet I'd told myself it didn't matter. I'd told myself that what we had was real and that chosen love grew stronger roots than fated love. I thought that we were building something worth more than a cosmic accident. Every single word of that had been a story I'd written for myself. But tonight, it ended. "Who is she?" I asked. My voice came out steadier than it had any right to. "Mira. From the Ashwood border patrol." He looked pained, genuinely with his jaw tight and eyes clouded. "It happened at last night's border meeting. I didn't know it was going to…" "Don't," I said. My voice broke on that one word. Just enough that I pressed my lips together hard and breathed through my nose the way my mother taught me when my wolf got too loud and too close to the surface. "Serena, please…" "You found your mate." I stood up. My body felt distant from me, like I was operating it from somewhere else. "Congratulations, Calder. I mean that." I didn't mean it. Or maybe I did, somewhere under the wreckage. I wasn't sure. I just needed him to stop talking. He crossed the room before I could step back. His hands found my shoulders, warm and familiar and completely, horribly wrong. Everything that used to feel like safety felt like the scene of something. "I'm so sorry," he said. "What we had… it was real. You have to know that." "Please stop!" I stepped out of his grip. The wolf in me snarled, and for once, I let her. "Don't stand here and talk about what we had like it's already past tense while you're still in my room." "It has to be." His voice went gentle. And that… that patience was what finally lit the fury behind my ribs, clean and bright like a struck match. "She's my mate, Serena. I can't…" "I know." I turned away from him. "I know you can't. So leave now." He stood there another moment, and I felt his gaze on the back of my neck like a weight I'd been carrying for two years without realizing how heavy it was. Then I heard the door closed. I waited until his footsteps faded completely. Then I went to the closet, pulled out my old training bag, and started packing my clothes and boots. I also grabbed the small knife my father had given me for my fifteenth birthday. I moved through the room like a woman who had already made her decision and just needed her hands to catch up. Because staying for such humiliation wasn't something I was built for. Not for this. My name is Serena Voss. I'm twenty years old, mid-tier warrior in Silver Ridge Pack… or I was, for about another ten minutes. Petra was asleep in the room next door. She was my best friend, the steadiest person I knew. If she were awake, she would have known exactly what to say. She would have sat with me in this dark until the worst of it passed. I stood outside her door with my fist raised. My heart hammered and I almost knocked at the door. But then, I didn't. Because if I did, I'd have to stay and watch Calder from the common room look at another woman the way I'd spent two years believing he looked at me. I just couldn't do it. I walked down the back stairs of the packhouse, out through the yard, and into the forest. The trees swallowed me the moment I crossed the treeline. The smell of pine and cold soil settled into my lungs like a hand pressed flat against a wound. I shifted between one step and the next thing I saw was my silver fur, four legs and the ground rising to meet me. After I completely shifted, I started running. I ran past the east ridge, the old boundary stones, the invisible line where Silver Ridge's territory ended and the wild forest began. I ran until the pack bond thinned to a tiny thread and the packhouse three miles behind me. The only sound in my world was my own breathing and the drum of my paws hitting against the earth. I stopped at the top of a hill I'd never crossed before. Below me, deep in the forested valley, were lights that burned through the trees and I saw another packhouse that looked and felt like another life, unfamiliar but slightly dangerous and completely untouched by anything that had happened to me in the last hour. I knew what pack it was though. I'd heard of the Thornwood Pack. Everyone in the north had. Their Alpha was new, installed less than a year ago after some kind of internal shift. But the word on him wasn't warm. He's known to be cold, precise, and very unforgiving. A man who ran his pack like a blade. He was Alpha Kael Dravon “Alpha Kael Dravon.” The name resounded in my head. I shifted back to human, crouching in the dark at the top of that hill with the cold grass under my bare feet and my whole future a blank page in front of me. Staring at the pack below the mountain, I had to make a fast decision. What did I have to lose anyway? I then started walking down.
