The Cemeteries Scourge

237 Words
Emby waited until night fell to begin her journey to ending this continuous torment. However the streets of Fright Wood looked very wrong. The lights of houses flickered like dying candles, their lights stuttering in and out of existence. The air felt thin, too thin as though the oxygen had been replaced by something else. Emby knew she had to make her way back to the cemetery so she got ready and walked timidly through the town. As Emby reached the cemetery gates, Skylar was already there, her expression unreadable. “Skylar,” Emby gasped. “We’re trapped in a loop. We have to…” But Skylar raised a trembling hand to cover her face. “I know.” Her voice was quiet, distant. “I’ve lived this night before. Over and over. Hundreds of times. I die, you wake up, and it starts again.” Emby’s throat tightened. “Then we can stop it. We just need to do something different.” Skylar looked up. “That’s what I thought too. But every time we try to change it, something changes us instead.” As she spoke, a faint rumbling spread beneath their feet. The gravestones began to hum, glowing faintly with veins of crimson light. The same chanting rose from the woods again. It was the same dark melody but this time it wasn’t coming from any figures. It was coming from the ground itself.
