Roxanne's POV A new day came, and I still was in the same situation I despised the most. I was always gazing at my children despite knowing I was not free to call them mine. The king forbade me to call them my children, I was their nanny and nothing else. I did my chores as usual and things went on all slowly. Endless thoughts filled my head as I did the chores. My plan to escape with my children was still on a stand still. Things took a dark turn when I heard a sudden uproar in the living room. I was in the kitchen cleaning up after myself when I heard screams. Out of fear, I rushed out to check what was happening. Reaching there, I was spooked to see Lyla and Liam both rolling on the floor and holding their stomachs. They were both groaning with pains as they perspired. The maids quickly grabbed them and rushed out of the pack house. I aimlessly followed them to the infirmary where they were attended to. My heart throbbed intensely as I waited for what would happen from here. “You seem quite stressed about this, You don't have to be worried, they'll probably be fine.” One of the maid blurted. “Probably? What would I do if something happens to them!” I exclaimed. “Stop overreacting, I don't know if you're worried that we'll get blamed for what happened but I'm certain they'll pardon us. It's just some children the king adopted to keep the pack house alive, nothing serious.” the maid insisted. Staring at her, I felt like ripping her to shreds but I held back myself. The king already gave me the one rule not to ever reveal that I'm their mother. Going against this can only mean I'll be deprived of the opportunity to ever see them again. I surely won't love to watch that happen. The head maid, Lady Katrina soon emerged. Our eyes met and looked away to avoid her gaze. Something about her always threw me off since I got here. It was if she had some secret hatred for me. I could tell that was the case but couldn't fight why she suddenly hates me despite us haven't never said a thing to each other. “You all can return to your posts now, words would be sent out if your attention is ever needed.” Lady Katrina stated. The obliged, and all scampered off. I didn't realize I was the only one left standing there. I couldn't move a muscle even though I wanted to. “And what might you be waiting for?” Lady Katrina asked me. I jolted back to reality and bowed slightly before walking off. That was a close one, I didn't want to abandon my children in such situation but refusing to leave would have landed me in so much trouble. My mind was still occupied with the thoughts of what happened. The sudden reaction was shortly after they ate a meal I had prepared. “Did something from the food cause this or it's something else. I need to go see them but I can't, this is too hard on me.” I lamented. About half an hour finally passed and I was in the maids quarters as usual. The main door opened and a guard walked in. “The king has requested that every maid gather in the halp. Failure to immediately comply would attract punishments, deadly ones.” The guard announced and left afterwards. My heart skipped on hearing this and I wondered what could be the issue this time. Without wasting time, the maids all rushed to the hall and I made sure not to be the last waiting. We all gathered in the hall and waited for whatever was going to happen. Shortly, the king emerged with his Beta, Ryder. Every maid was on their toes as they awaited the announcement. King Adrian gave his beta the go-ahead and he stepped forward. “One of you had attempted to kill the children today by food poisoning. Whoever you are, we will encourage you to step forward now before we fish you out.” The words pierced my heart, it was exactly as I thought. No one made any attempts to step forward as the culprit. “It was not me, right? I only prepared their meals with the ingredients provided by the royal chefs.” I thought to myself. To my greatest fear, Lady Katrina steps in. “My king, there is no need to conduct a search for the culprit. We should be questioning her.” She said, her finger pointing directly at me. My heart almost stopped beating as our eyes met again. “Step forward, you are the twin's nanny and most importantly, you prepared their meal.” Lady Katrina blurted. Covered with shame and fear, I slowly stepped out in front of everyone. I gazed at King Adrian and he had this disgusted look on his face. I could tell he was shocked and disappointed to see me standing there as the culprit. “What do you have to say for yourself? You were trusted with the children and you tried to kill them, why! I knew something was wrong when I saw you stay back at the infirmary.”She added. She had stepped close to me now and was staring into my soul. “ Everything is a total misunderstanding, I only prepared the meal with the ingredients the chefs provided. I added nothing else except that.” I said. “Liar! How dare you deceive the king!” Lady Katrina hissed, slapping me across the face. I held the burning cheek as tears gathered in my eyes. “We are not sure what happened yet. Take her away and lock her in the dungeon until I make a decision. No one is allowed to see her.” King African said and left without saying anything else. The guards came to me and grabbed me to take me away. “Wait, please. This is a lie, someone else poisoned the children and is blaming me. I am innocent.” I protested as they dragged me away.
