Chapter 1
"Miss Clarke, you're pregnant, 8 weeks along, but you have severe anemia. This pregnancy might endanger your life," says the doctor. Evelyn freezes, her face turning pale. The doctor glances at another medical report and continues, "However, you have a naturally cold and infertile constitution. If you terminate this pregnancy, it'll be difficult for you to conceive again. You should discuss the fate of this child with your husband first." Trembling, Evelyn's mind goes blank. She walks to the side, almost instinctively pulls out her phone, and hurriedly dials Nathaniel's number. Married for three years, finally pregnant, she never thought the child would jeopardize her life. At this moment, Evelyn wishes Nathaniel could be by her side. Her hands trembling, she holds the phone, glancing down to see Nathaniel's call still unanswered. Closing her eyes slowly, she bites her lip tightly. Loneliness, desolation, and coldness engulf her in an instant. "Miss Clarke, have you discussed this with your husband?" Evelyn slowly comes back to her senses. Perhaps due to the anemia, her face looks especially pale. She bites her lip and whispers, "I'm sorry, doctor, my husband might be busy. His phone is unreachable. Can I decide by myself?" The doctor frowns, "Miss Clarke, this is not a trivial matter. You'd better have your husband come over. You have another examination shortly, and it requires a family member to accompany you." Evelyn murmurs, "Hmm," just as the doctor's phone rings. Nodding repeatedly, she says, "I'll be right there," then gets up and leaves. Moments later, a nurse enters and sits beside another nurse. Evelyn is about to dial Nathaniel's number when she overhears their conversation. "The director asked the head physician to go and check on Sophie Thompson. Rumor has it that she's pregnant with Mr. Steele's child, and she's already over three months along." "Don't spread rumors." "It's true. I just saw Mr. Steele accompanying Miss Thompson for the pregnancy test. Mr. Steele even specifically requested the best doctor for her examination." Listening to the nurses, Evelyn's fair fingers curl tightly around the phone, her fingertips turning white. The nurses continue to gossip. "Isn't Mr. Steele married? Isn't Miss Thompson becoming the third party? Her child will be illegitimate." "You don't know this. I heard Mr. Steele's wife has been married for three years without conceiving, and Mr. Steele doesn't even like her. Now that Miss Thompson is pregnant, I reckon Mr. Steele will divorce his wife." "Mrs. Steele is a pitiful woman." Evelyn's back thuds against the wall with a muffled sound. The nurses notice her presence and glance at her before refraining from further discussion. Evelyn's hands unconsciously clench tighter, her heart feeling like it's being cut by a dull knife, each throb spreading throughout her body. She pushes the door open and walks out, her hand holding the phone trembling slightly as she dials the number she had just dialed halfway. Nathaniel retrieves his phone and frowns upon seeing several missed calls from Evelyn. His voice lacks warmth as he answers, "What's the matter?" Evelyn's hand moves up to her abdomen, and with a hint of expectation in her voice, she asks, "Why didn't you answer the phone earlier?" Nathaniel's tone remains cold, devoid of any warmth. "Didn't I tell you I was in a meeting?" "Are you really in a meeting?" Evelyn's voice is hoarse. "Is there something?" The impatience is evident in his tone. Evelyn tightens her grip on the phone, listening to his disdainful tone, she forces a self-deprecating smile and says, "Nothing." "Beep beep beep..." A busy tone follows her words. Evelyn looks up, at the end of another corridor, she sees Nathaniel and Miss Thompson coming out of the examination room, escorted by the same doctor who had just examined her. How ironic! It's summer now, but Evelyn still feels a chill spreading throughout her body. Before, when she hadn't seen it with her own eyes, she could pretend it wasn't true. Now, seeing Nathaniel accompanying Miss Thompson for the pregnancy test, she realizes she's the joke in this marriage. Evelyn's hands stroke her abdomen, and a tear rolls down, hitting the phone with a muffled sound. A week ago, Evelyn learned of her pregnancy, and she was excited for a long time. Nathaniel went on a business trip, and she wanted to surprise him when he came back. Today, she had vaginal bleeding, which made her extremely nervous. She didn't expect him to return from his business trip and immediately take Miss Thompson for a pregnancy test, and tell her he was in a meeting. Evelyn smiles bitterly. Now, she only has her child left. Even if it's risky, she'll keep the child. When the doctor returns and learns that Evelyn insists on keeping the child, she has to respect her wishes. However, Evelyn needs to sign on the diagnosis sheet, and if something happens to her, the hospital won't be responsible. Evelyn enters the hospital examination department. There are many young couples at the door, some men holding their wives' hands tightly, reassuring them not to worry, while others hug their wives tightly, comforting them in a low voice, "Don't be afraid, I'm here." These loving scenes stab Evelyn's eyes, and her heart feels like it's been peeled, the pain spreading throughout her body. She's the exception, hiring a nurse to accompany her. *** Nathaniel doesn't return home until after ten o'clock in the evening. After washing up, he looks at Evelyn lying on the bed and lies down beside her, pulling her into his arms from behind. Evelyn leans away. Nathaniel notices she's not asleep and moves his hand from her waist, his warm breath spilling over her body, about to take off her clothes. Evelyn doesn't want him to touch her. Turning her head, Evelyn looks at the man in front of her and says expressionlessly, "I don't want to make love tonight." Nathaniel is taken aback, furrowing his brows slightly. Evelyn never resisted before, and although they didn't have much emotional connection, their s****l relationship was relatively harmonious. Seeing her acting out of character today, the man's displeasure shows. "Didn't you always want to make love?" he asks. Evelyn sneers, turning her head without saying a word. Nathaniel sees Evelyn, who has always been obedient, showing her fangs, her gaze blatantly challenging him. Recalling her questioning at the hospital, a surge of anger suddenly rises in his heart. He grabs her shoulder and demands, "Evelyn, you've always been sensible. What do you want today?" Evelyn's heart continues to uncontrollably convulse. Without much expression, she states, "I'm tired and want to rest." With a dissatisfied look, Nathaniel says, "Accompany me in lovemaking; it's your duty as a wife." Evelyn's cold laughter sends shivers down his spine. "So, marrying me was only for this?" "Not entirely." Evelyn frowns. Nathaniel's voice remains monotone, "Also to make my grandfather happy." Evelyn mocks with a smile, "I don't want to make love today. If you want, you can find other women." Nathaniel's brow furrows deeper. Just as he's about to say something, the phone rings. Evelyn catches a glimpse of Miss Thompson's name flashing on his phone, and her heart throbs slightly. Nathaniel gets up, answers the call, hastily puts on his clothes, then looks at the woman on the bed. "I'm going out for a bit. I'll be back soon." With that, he leaves without a backward glance. Evelyn watches his retreating figure, gripping the bedsheet tightly, her heart a tangled mess.
