I follow Jasper up into my—our—home and the second we cross the threshold, I know it’s different. Everything about this feels different. This house is no longer Mom’s and mine. It’s my husband’s and mine. The door clicks closed behind us, signalling the start of so much. Jasper will be here now, all the time, with me. Outside this house, we’ll be husband and wife and are meant to act like it. The ornate staircase leading up to the bedrooms will now be used by us both. He will have a say in what food goes into the kitchen. In the morning, does he drink coffee, tea, or smoothies?
