Chapter 1
Chapter One: The Christmas Clash
The snow-dusted streets of Willow Creek buzzed with anticipation as Emily Harper added the final touches to the town’s annual Christmas Gala. Strings of fairy lights crisscrossed the vaulted ceiling of the event hall, their warm glow reflecting off the frosted windows. The scent of cinnamon and pine mingled with the hum of cheerful chatter as guests began to trickle in, dressed in their holiday finest.
For Emily, this night wasn’t just another event—it was a labor of love. Her small business, Ever After Events, had thrived on turning dreams into realities, and this gala was her crown jewel of the season. As she stood back to admire her work, a deep voice interrupted her thoughts.
“Are you the one in charge here?”
She turned to find herself face-to-face with a man who looked as though he’d stepped off the cover of a high-end business magazine. He was tall, with sharp cheekbones and a perfectly tailored charcoal suit that seemed wildly out of place amidst the festive atmosphere. His dark hair was neatly combed, and his piercing gray eyes were focused on her, not with curiosity, but with barely concealed impatience.
“Yes,” Emily replied, straightening her posture. “I’m Emily Harper, the event planner. Can I help you?”
“Liam Caldwell,” he said, extending a hand briefly before pulling it back. “I have a question about the seating arrangements.”
Her smile faltered slightly. “What seems to be the issue?”
“I’m seated at a table with strangers,” he said bluntly. “Business professionals, I assume, but not exactly the company I was hoping for tonight.”
Emily raised an eyebrow, her initial warmth fading. “The gala’s purpose is to bring the community together. It’s an opportunity to meet new people, make connections.”
“Perhaps, but I’m here for family business, not small talk,” Liam replied, his tone clipped. “I’d appreciate it if you could move me to a quieter table.”
Emily bit back a retort, aware of the guests watching from across the room. She gestured toward a nearby seating chart. “I’ll see what I can do,” she said, her voice tight.
As Liam walked away, Emily muttered under her breath, “Merry Christmas to you, too.”

Later, as the evening progressed, Emily found herself crossing paths with Liam more often than she’d anticipated. He had an air of control that seemed to follow him wherever he went, though she noticed a flicker of something softer when he interacted with the older guests at his table. She caught snippets of conversation—he was in town for a property dispute involving his family’s estate, a fact that didn’t surprise her. He seemed like the kind of man who dealt in contracts and negotiations, not Christmas magic.
By the time the first round of desserts was served, Emily was ready to avoid him altogether. But fate had other plans.
She was adjusting a centerpiece when she heard a familiar voice behind her. “Miss Harper.”
Turning, she saw Liam standing beneath the archway, where a sprig of mistletoe hung above his head. Her stomach twisted as her gaze flicked upward.
“Yes, Mr. Caldwell?” she asked, keeping her tone professional.
He followed her gaze and sighed. “Let me guess—another small-town tradition?”
Emily crossed her arms, her lips curving into a wry smile. “It’s tradition to kiss if you’re caught under mistletoe.”
Liam raised an eyebrow, his expression unreadable. “Seems rather arbitrary.”
“Maybe, but it’s Christmas,” Emily countered. “A time for surprises, wouldn’t you agree?”
For a moment, the icy facade cracked. Liam’s gaze softened, his eyes studying her face as if weighing a decision. Before she could react, he took a step closer, cupped her cheek lightly, and pressed his lips to hers.
The kiss was unexpected, warm, and fleeting—but it left Emily breathless. When he pulled back, his expression was unreadable again, but his voice carried a hint of something new.
“Perhaps there’s more to small-town traditions than I thought,” he said softly.
Emily stared after him as he walked away, her heart pounding. She had planned every detail of this evening—every garland, every light—but she hadn’t planned for Liam Caldwell.
And as the night wore on, she couldn’t shake the feeling that their paths had crossed for a reason.
