Chapter 1
INANNA POV
"Shhh, Merlin..... be quiet or we are gonna get caught" I tried to coo to her while jumping on another log in my path.
"Catch her!! Don't let her run away this time!!" I didn't need to turn back to see whose voice it was because I knew that it was the voice of Draco, leader of the chasers.
The forest around me was a blur as I ran, my heart pounding in my chest. Every step was a battle, every breath a struggle. I could feel the sweat on my forehead and the sharp sting of thorns and brambles against my skin But I pushed on, driven by a fierce sense of determination. I knew that I couldn't afford to stop, not even for a moment. The coven was hot on my heels, and I had to stay ahead of them.
My sister in my arms was crying loudly, her tiny fists pounding against my chest. I tried to soothe her, but my voice was hoarse from exhaustion. My instincts as both a werewolf and a witch were screaming at me to keep moving, to keep running, and to never look back. I clutched the tiny bundle in my arms closer to my chest, feeling her weight and warmth as a constant reminder of why I was doing this. I had to find a way out of this, for both our sakes.
My parents had already been taken by the coven, their fate unknown to me. But I wasn't going to let them take my little sister, Merlin, too. I had promised to protect her, to keep her safe from the very people who were supposed to be our family.
My senses were on high alert as I navigated the dense forest, my heightened sense of smell and hearing working in tandem to detect any potential danger. I wanted to take a break. I was panting hard and was out of breath. The crying sound of Merlin was a plus point for them to track me. I knew that if I wanted to hide somewhere, then first, I must calm her down.
I pulled out the only half-candy I had in my pocket and put it in her open mouth, using my other hand to hold her tightly against me. The shouts of the coven members grew louder, and I knew that they were nearby and I had to come up with a plan. I searched for any possible exits, any signs of civilization, but there was nothing. I was surrounded by forest. Also, it was daytime and the situation was not favourable for me to hide in bushes or behind a large tree. I needed to be quick, to come up with something before they caught up to us.
I was a half-witch and half-werewolf, a hybrid that was feared by many but coveted by some. And it was that very fact that had led to the coven's betrayal.
I tried using magic traps on them but they, being the experts, could easily counter my magic. I remembered my training and realized there had to be something I could do. Then it occurred to me that I could design a decoy, a diversion that would draw their attention away from both me and my sister. But casting this spell requires a lot of power. This was also the reason that I hadn't used it before. I wanted to save my power so that I could run far away, but considering the situation, using it was my last hope, so I decided to give it a try. I closed my eyes and focused, tapping into my witch side. I could feel the energy coursing through me as I performed a spell, creating an illusion of myself racing in a different direction. I made a break for it, running in the opposite direction, hoping that they would follow the illusion.
I could hear their footsteps behind me, their voices growing fainter as they chased the illusion. I ran faster, my heart pounding in my chest. I knew that I had to keep moving, to find a safe place for me and Merlin.
I pushed through the dense undergrowth, dodging trees and branches, my senses on high alert. I could feel my wolf side taking over, the fear and adrenaline fueling my every movement. I was determined to protect my sister, to keep her safe from those who would harm her.
As I ran, I felt a surge of emotion, a mix of fear and determination, love and protection. I was a hybrid, feared by many, but I refused to let that define me. I was a protector, a fighter, and a survivor. And I would do anything to keep my little sister safe.
With luck, I was able to get to protection before they realize they'd been tricked. I felt a rush of pride as I thought about how far I had come. Despite the odds, I had managed to survive this long. I was strong, I was brave, and I refused to let anyone break me. But I knew that I couldn't keep running forever. Sooner or later, the coven would catch up to me, and I would be forced to face them.
But for now, I had to focus on finding a safe place to hide. Somewhere they would never think to look. I scanned the forest once more, searching for any sign of civilization. But all I could see were trees, stretching out as far as the eye could see. It was like a maze, and I had no idea which way to go.
I took a deep breath, steeling myself for the long journey ahead. I had no idea what lay in store for me, but I knew that I had to keep moving forward. For myself, for the baby in my arms, and for all those who had been lost along the way.
With a renewed sense of determination, I set off once more, my feet pounding against the forest floor. I didn't know where I was going, but I knew that as long as I kept running, I still had a chance. A chance to survive, a chance to escape, and a chance to finally be free.
Suddenly, I stumbled upon a small stream. It was a welcome sight, as I was desperately in need of water. I stopped for a moment to catch my breath and hydrate both myself and the baby. As I drank, I heard the sound of rushing water in the distance, growing louder and louder.
I followed the sound and came upon a waterfall. It was a beautiful sight, and I felt a wave of relief wash over me. I knew that where there was water, there would be people. I made my way toward the waterfall, my heart filled with hope.
I continued walking along the edge of the stream. The most crucial thing at that moment was to find a safe hideout and rest for some time. Walking for what felt like hours but was just a few minutes, I stumbled upon the beautiful and appetizing garden full of fruits of various types. My stomach growled in hunger. I couldn't care less if that well-maintained garden belonged to someone or not. The only thing that was on my mind was to put something in my system so that I could walk further.
Walking under the huge shade of the apple tree, I plucked an apple using magic. The red and juicy apple gave me the hope that good things were coming my way. As soon as I took the first bite, my whole body felt refreshed. What amazed me more was that my drained core of magic became active. Before I could get another bite of that apple, I heard a rustling sound in the bushes nearby.
My body got on alert and I dashed behind the tree to hide. The vast field of flowers was in front of me. I knew that if I ran forward then I would be easily spotted. Thank Goddess that Merlin was asleep or hiding would be a mission impossible for me. From their scents, I knew that they were not the chasers.
Though my core of magic became active, I didn't have the power to use the magic properly. Also, the ache in my legs was not allowing me to take a step further. My body was drained, and my legs felt heavy. I knew I had to be careful if I wanted to make it out alive. I focused on masking my scent and the striking blue colour of my eyes, a dead giveaway of my half-werewolf heritage. It was the only possible thing that I could do at that moment.
As I hid behind the apple tree, my heart pounding with fear and anticipation, I heard the sound of voices coming closer. They were speaking in hushed tones, but their words carried clearly on the wind.
"I heard the Alpha king is looking for his sister," said one voice, speaking in a low growl. "He thinks the vampires took her."
"Who cares about the Alpha king and his problems?" snarled another voice, this one higher-pitched and more nasal. "He's nothing but a cold-hearted, arrogant tyrant. He doesn't care about us or he wouldn't have sent us to guard this place."
"Agreed, It's like he thinks he's better than all of us just because he's the Alpha," said a third voice, sounding more reasonable than the others. "But we still need to be careful. His soldiers are everywhere, and they won't hesitate to attack anyone who looks suspicious. We need to keep our heads down and our noses clean."
I listened to the conversation, feeling a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I had stumbled onto the territory of the Alpha king, one of the most notorious and feared werewolf leaders in the land. I had heard rumours about him, and they were not good. He was known for his ruthlessness and lack of mercy towards his enemies. He was known as a monster and a power-hungry animal. No one dared to cross his path and even if some did then he was never seen alive on earth. And now, I knew that was in more danger than I had ever been before.
I knew that I had to get out of there quickly before anyone felt my presence and came looking for me. But my legs were weak, and I was still too exhausted to run. I tried to gather my strength, drawing on the power of the apple I had eaten, but it was no use. I was still too weak to move.
As the voices drew closer, I knew that I was running out of time. I took a deep breath and tried to steady myself, preparing to make a run for it. But before I could even take a step, I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. Someone had felt my presence.
