Jordan chuckled softly, his hands on his cheek as he relaxed on the chair he was seated on.
"What’s the point of teaching me something I can already do?" Jordan asked, narrowing his eyes, then scoffed.
Ethan dropped his hands from adjusting his glasses and sighed. "It’s mandatory for you to learn this. It doesn’t matter if you can already do it. Besides, if I don’t teach you — even if you already know — your father, King Julien, will have me thrown out of this castle. I am not only here to act as your teacher but someone who will protect you from any looming threat, that's why I want you to follow my instruction."
At the age of two, Jordan had already mastered the elemental cultivation type of fire, and this deeply impressed Ethan. But he had strict instructions from Fiona to never reveal this fact to the king, fearing that King Julien might thrust the boy into a brutal test of strength to prove his worth, and this left Fiona in a concern she can't afford. She's not ready to lose the only gift her sister Laura left in the world before departing.
"Remember what I’ve told you Ryan. Whatever you already know about your fire cultivation type must be kept hidden for now," Ethan warned.
But little Jordan simply smirked, narrowing his eyes. "What’s the point of possessing this kind of power if I must keep it hidden? What use is it when I’m confined here like a bird in a cage?" Jordan yelled, groaning aloud. Though a reincarnated soul, he could not fully control the body of a child even if he was an adult and could fully know he existed somewhere but only with the last memories of his death. He could never resist moments of childish outbursts often bubbled forth.
"No, Ryan, don't be deceived and make pride lead you to something that could consume you," Ethan countered, adjusting his glasses as he stepped closer, "you must understand — your father gave strict orders for you never to leave the castle grounds. Not even the towns within the city of Sinclair. You must remain within these walls for now, for your own safety."
After speaking Ethan smiled and then he turned and smiled down at Jordan, who was resting his chin in the palm of his hand, releasing an exasperated sigh.
"Sometimes I wonder… are you truly a child or an adult? You have moments where you seem far too mature for your years," Ethan teased with a soft chuckle.
"This is getting tiresome," Jordan mumbled to himself. "I need to explore, to understand what I’m capable of."
Then, after a moment of silence, Jordan looked up sharply as he asked. "What does it mean to be reincarnated?"
Ethan paused and adjusted his glasses, a faint chuckle escaping him. "To be honest, my boy, that knowledge is forbidden — buried deep and long forgotten."
Ethan thought deeply about the question from Jordan then tilted his head, curiosity rising within him. "Why do you ask?"
And Jordan casually replied, playing with his fingers. "I came across a book that spoke extensively about reincarnation itself," Jordan replied, reaching for the book resting beside him. He lifted it and offered it to Ethan.
Ethan’s eyes widened, and he staggered backward. "Good heavens! Where… where did you get that book? That is forbidden knowledge!"
Ethan was dumbfounded. The book was said to be sealed deep underground, and seeing it in the hands of a mere two-year-old was unimaginable. It was an ancient tome containing obscure magic and summoning rituals — too dark and too dangerous for any cultivator to possess.
"Where on earth did you find this?" he demanded, horrified.
"I found it in my father’s library, somewhere hidden," Jordan replied, voice calm.
A few days ago, Jordan had snuck into his father’s room and discovered the book, hidden within a sealed glass case. Jordan, not fearing the danger of what he had taken, he began to read and study it in secret. Its pages brimmed with ancient texts that only a magic cultivator was said to read and understand.
"What have you done?" Ethan gasped, voice shaking. "You must return it before your father finds out. He’ll kill me for allowing this!"
Jordan waved a tiny hand dismissively. "You don’t have to be afraid. The book doesn’t hurt. And besides, it talks about healing cultivation as well."
Ethan froze, eyebrows rising sharply. "What? What did you just say?"
Ethan was astounded. Jordan was not a magic cultivator, and yet he claimed to understand what the ancient text contains. The boy’s words shook him to the core, and this could only mean one thing: Jordan is something else that Ethan could actually use.
"How were you able to read and understand the ancient text from the book?" Ethan pressed, stepping closer and taking the book from Jordan’s hands, placing it hastily upon the desk, flipping the pages as he stared through the text. "This is an ancient text that even seasoned magic cultivators struggle to decipher. How can you possibly understand it?" Ethan asked, raising his glance at Jordan.
"I don’t know," Jordan said quietly, shrugging his shoulders. "I felt like I could. So I tried reading the text, and somehow… it all made sense and i understood the content in it."
Ethan was stunned into silence. Ten years ago, he had scoured the entire land even going beyond the barriers of Sinclair kingdom which is prohibited just to meet someone strong, specifically a seasoned magic type cultivator for this very text in the forbidden book. And finally he found someone, a witch which whispered to him its secrets — knowledge he had hoped would save his severely sick wife, but he had failed to find the necessary remedies to create the potion that could heal her. And now here was a two-year-old boy, reading its ancient words as if it were second nature, and this baffled Ethan, if he had gotten this same opportunity years back, his wife wouldn't have been dead.
"Ryan," Ethan said finally, voice grave, "you must return this book. This is not a toy. Its contents can cause chaos and draw forth unspeakable evil."
Ethan’s voice shook as he spoke, knowing the terror this book held. The space from which Jordan had taken it was no ordinary room — it was a hidden library within the king’s chambers, protected by a sealed glass case. Its purpose was to contain the dark energy within, ensuring it would never attract demons from afar.
King Julien had spent years studying the book in hopes of mastering its secrets. And knowing the sheer danger the book possesses, Julien kept it sealed, knowing that to openly expose it would risk disaster.
"Ryan, I beg you. Take this book and return it to its place. Do it before your father finds out — or else I’ll be executed for allowing this to happen."
Ethan, despite his eccentric nature, was a loyal teacher, a wise scholar, and one of the best-known minds in the kingdom of Sinclair.
Just then, a sharp knock sounded at the door, followed by a voice.
"Ethan! King Julien requests Ryan’s presence."
Ethan’s heart sank In a panic, he scooped up the book and slipped it into his coat, hiding it completely from the guard. Quickly, he crossed to the door where the knock had sounded, then opened it gently.
"Yes, you can have him. Our lesson is done for the day," he announced with a composed smile.
The guard stepped into the room, hoisted Jordan upon his shoulder, and walked out the door, leaving Ethan standing in silence, one hand pressed protectively against the book which was covered by his coat.
