Chapter 4That night was the worst and best night of my life. I woke to the choking smoke that filtered under my bedroom door and panic enveloped me instantly. Why hadn’t the fire alarms gone off? It wasn’t difficult to guess the answer to that. Someone wanted me gone. I hopped from my bed and flicked on the lamp on the bedside table only to feel my heart jump into my throat when I saw the writing on the wall: If I can’t have you, nobody can. Total fear had me racing for the door but the moment my hand gripped the handle I yanked it back, my palm already blistering. Thick black smoke clouded above my head as I crouched low and dashed towards the window. I pushed it open so hard that the damned thing almost flew off its hinges. “Help!
