Chapter 1
Mabels POV
As I sat down to collect my thoughts, Naxy, my bestie as usual, came to nag me about the new hot guys in school.
At least it got me to think less about how mom kept on talking about my marriage to some guy who was of class as she termed it.
"So who's the new hot boy you saw today?" I asked mischievously.
"Oh c'mon, it doesn't always have to be a boy, you know. But anyway . . . . . ." Naxy stopped and chuckled.
"Out with it. What is he like?" Part of me was really curious.
Naxy always knew that I hated suspense and probably that's why she loved seeing me curious.
" Well, he's tall, hot, Caucasian and like damn sexy. You should see him, who knows he might be your type" she laughed.
Naxy knew how strict my mom was about me interacting with people and she always joked about it. Everyone knew we were friends because of our status.
I always knew my mom saw me as just a business transaction, and she wouldn't want the family business to be bankrupt because of some guy I know married who wasn't rich. I knew, no matter what, this was the kind of life I was stuck with.
"What did you bring for lunch today or is it your diet salad again?" Naxy asked as she reached for my lunch.
"You know it's the usual. Mrs Farris won't let me have some unhealthy food because it might ruin my girly figure."
We both laughed. I knew I was somehow jealous of Naxy, since her parents were not even as half strict as my mom, yet I must say she looked better than me.
"Back to the guy I was talking about. If I were to go on a date with a guy I would surely choose him. Like he's so angelic, you know. Trust..." I cut her short.
"That's the fifty-seventh guy. You have said the exact same thing. So go ahead and tell me what's so special about this new crush of yours that I have to trust you. Huh?" I just knew she would just repeat the same words she usually said about every guy that came her way. Before she could even answer my question, she left her seat and started walking towards me.she walked past me and couldn't help but turn to see who she was after.
"Do you mind if he sits at our table?" Naxy asked.
I couldn't take my eyes off him and I just couldn't say no.
"Well, Kayden, this is Mabel and Mabel, this is Kayden. You can just call him Kay, right?" she said, looking back at Kayden.
"Guys, I'd love to stay, but I need to call my mom so catch later love you," she pressed a kiss on my cheek before walking away.
I knew this was a way for Naxy to leave this hot guy in my company. For the first time I didn't question her taste in guys. Well, this might have been the most awkward moment, but he loosened it up a bit.
"So what are you studying?" he asked.
" Degree in art. Something to do with film making and production. What about you?" I asked back.
"Same here.. Guess I will be seeing you more often then," he said with an infectious smile revealing his deep dimples against his rosy cheeks.
For once, I couldn't mind a guy's company without caring about his background status. Who knew Naxy somehow had a taste for men, at least not me.
" So tell me about yourself, Kay?" I questioned him.
"Well.... Um... I was adopted when I was a kid and so, basically, I don't know much about my family. Though my adopted family isn't rich, they really loved me as their own, and I'm really grateful to them because I don't know where I would be without them. So I'm just trying to work hard to help them with the expenses and the education of my siblings. What about you? "
I could see his pain when he talked about his family, the family he didn't even know about. For a second, I wanted to give him a warm hug, but I couldn't bring myself to it.
" It must feel great to have siblings. I'm the only kid to my mom. My dad passed away when I was just a baby, so I barely know him or even what he looked like. All I see is his pictures. My mom hates talking about him. So yeah that's me. You can't miss what you don't know, right? " I let out a cold chuckle because, deep down, I wanted to know about my dad and always wished that his death was a lie my mom used to keep me away from him.
"I guess we don't have much of a difference then," Kayden laughed. I just joined in the laughter.
For a long time I felt genuinely happy. I had met someone apart from Naxy who made me feel like I belonged somewhere. Someone with whom I didn't have to pretend to be someone else. For a moment, I felt like I had known him my whole life and we probably belonged together.
Back to reality, I knew my mom would lecture me out if she ever found out about him. She wouldn't want him near me and I knew she would go as far as ensuring he was expelled so that he was out of my life. I didn't want to ruin his future, yet I knew I wanted to be in his circle.
"Are you okay, Mabel? Your mind seems to have wondered away a bit. If you are not comfortable, I could just leave. It's okay, you can just tell me," the gentleness of his voice brought me back to the cute guy sitting across me.
"No, it's nothing. I really needed some company, especially since Naxy isn't here, you know," I let out a light chuckle.
"I'll be off now. See you around, I guess" with a smile I left.
