An Impossible Escape

1103 Words
"Leave?! Lucy, do you think you can leave me?" Lucy, startled, looked up at him, her expression betraying a momentary shock. "Don't think you can use such an excuse to escape from me!" Kevin’s voice was deep and unyielding, filled with a cold finality that allowed no room for defiance. His dark eyes, as deep as the ocean, bore into hers. "That’s not something that can happen. If you dare to escape from me, then the St. Mary’s Orphanage will disappear forever." As the sky darkened and nightfall deepened, Lucy looked up at Kevin. Her dark eyes were calm, almost serene, leaving Kevin unable to read her thoughts. After what seemed like an eternity, Lucy lifted her head, her face composed and indifferent. "Kevin, do you think you can control me? Do you think that St. Mary’s Orphanage can be used to threaten me?" Kevin was taken aback. His deep-set eyes filled with sudden confusion, and his arms, which had held her so tightly, suddenly felt cold and numb, devoid of strength. "Lucy, you—" Lucy looked at him with cool detachment, her dark eyes turning cold as if trying to mask the pain hidden deep within. "Surprised, aren't you? Surprised that I would say something like that." Her voice was soft, but her entire being was enveloped in an icy chill. "Why would I sacrifice my freedom for something that has nothing to do with me? In this world, there’s no one truly trustworthy. The only person I can depend on is myself." Kevin stared at her, his heart suddenly gripped by an overwhelming sense of loss. The dark shadows in his eyes deepened as he realized the woman before him was no longer the gentle and kind Lucy he once knew. The words she spoke were so cold and detached, as if nothing in this world could threaten her—except herself. So unless she chooses to stay, there's no way I can keep her. "You want to know why I've changed, don’t you?" Lucy’s voice was soft, almost like a breeze brushing past Kevin’s ear. "The truth is, I've always been this way. In this world, the person I love most… is myself." Her clear, dark eyes were hollow, devoid of emotion. "Trying to use the orphanage to threaten me into staying is a futile effort. I simply don’t care." Kevin’s eyes clouded over with silence. "You’re willing to leave me at any cost?" His once-proud eyes now glimmered with a dangerous intensity, his handsome face bathed in the faint light, like Apollo. "Even if I destroy the orphanage?" "Yes, no matter what you use to threaten me, I will still leave!" Suddenly, everything around them seemed to fall into a heavy silence. The room grew oppressively still as if the very air was thick with dread. Kevin’s expression darkened, disbelief etched across his face. His red-tinged eyes dulled as if all hope had drained away. It was as if the words he’d just heard couldn’t possibly be real. "What did you just say?" His voice was thick with despair as he stepped closer, his breath heavy with emotion. "I said—no matter what you use to threaten me, I’m leaving." "Good… good!" Kevin laughed bitterly and turned away, but as he reached the door, he stopped. His back was straight and rigid, his proud face devoid of any expression. The soft moonlight bathed the room in a cool, silvery glow, leaving only Lucy’s shadow in the quiet room. The silence was overwhelming, and the space around her seemed cold and unfamiliar, so much so that she shivered. Kevin had left, locking her inside this cold, lonely place. Before he left, he had told her she would never escape him—not in this lifetime. "Kevin, how could you do this to me? How could you? All I want is to leave, is that too much to ask?" Lucy leaned against the cold glass window and slowly sank to the floor. She hugged her knees, curling up as if trying to ward off the biting cold. You love her… so why are you forcing me to stay? Is it because of my face? Because I look like her? Tears welled in her clear eyes, shimmering like glass, as she bit down hard on her lip. Silent tears fell to the cold, gray floor, forming tiny, glistening droplets. "Kevin, I tried… I did. But I just can’t go on anymore. I love you, but that’s not enough to make me stay… because there’s no place for Lucy in your heart." Beneath the pale moonlight, Lucy hugged her cold body tightly as tears streamed down her face. She bit down hard on her lip, the taste of blood mingling with her sorrow. Her eyes stared blankly into the void, lost in the suffocating darkness of her thoughts. She didn’t know how long she sat there, but eventually, she fell asleep against the cold glass. The moonlight shone on her small, delicate face, illuminating her stunning beauty in the quiet of the night. Sometime after midnight, the door quietly creaked open. A tall figure cast a long shadow across the gray floor, enveloping Lucy’s fragile body in its silhouette. Kevin’s violet eyes, gleaming in the dim light, gazed deeply at the sleeping woman before him, his expression softening with an unspoken tenderness. Under the pale moonlight, the small cross earring hanging from his ear shimmered faintly. His short, raven-black hair framed his face like a dark halo, and his eyes—brilliant as starlight—held within them a depth of love and affection he’d never shown before. Kevin stood in front of Lucy, looking down at her sleeping form. Slowly, he bent down, his movements careful not to wake her. She breathed evenly, unaware of his presence. His hand gently caressed her cheek, a look of remorse passing through his eyes. "Lucy… did I hurt you?" he whispered. "But you must understand… I only hurt you because you wanted to leave me. That’s why I did it." He sighed and, bending down, scooped Lucy into his arms, carrying her to the bed. As he looked at her sleeping face, Kevin’s violet eyes grew dark with sorrow. "Bella… was I wrong?" he murmured, his voice barely audible. "She isn’t you… she can never take your place in my heart." "But why… why does it hurt so much to think about her leaving? Why does it shock me to my core? Even if she hates me, I can’t bear to let her go." "What kind of feeling is this? Is it… love?"
