The King Of Shadows. “Why are you following me?" I demanded spinning around to face the man with the tailored suit who had been shadowing me for blocks. My voice became steady but my heart was racing. The streets of Manhattan were bustling around us, yet the intensity of his presence seemed to drown out everything else. The man stepped closer with his dark eyes gleaming under the dim city lights. “Rory Welles, isn't it?” he asked in his low and smooth rumble. “You're more fearless than I expected". "That doesn't answer my question,” I snapped, clutching my purse tightly, “Who are you, and why have you been tailing me?” He smirks with his calm yet unnervingly confident expression. “Julian Barbieri,” he introduced himself as though the name was supposed to mean something to me. ‘The Bull’ I believe you’ve been digging into my family affairs. The realization hit me like a freight train. Julian Barbieri wasn't just anyone. He was the Julian Barbieri—The mafia kingpin whose name struck fear into even the most hardened criminals. And here he was standing in front of me as if this was just another casual meeting. I forced myself to maintain eye contact as I swallowed hard to express myself. “Just a brief introduction about myself; I’m a journalist, and it's my job to uncover the truth no matter where it leads.” Julian's smirk widened. "A noble answer. But digging too deep into my world, Rory can have consequences. Deadly ones." I stood by my ground refusing to back down even though his words sent a chill down my spine. "It won't work if you’re trying to intimidate me. I’ve faced worse than threats from a mafia boss." He chuckled with a deep, unsettling sound, which made the hair on the back of my neck rise. "Oh, Rory, why act like you know the game, but deep inside, you’re just playing against the king." I straightened up my shoulders, taking up deep and refusing to let him see my nerves. "You should take it up with my editor if you have any problem with my work," I said. Julian chuckled. It wasn’t warm—it was calculated, like a predator toying with prey. "Rory Welles, investigative journalist. Bold, clever. But do you know what happens to people who dig too deep into my life?" I raised an eyebrow, determined to keep up the act. "They win a Pulitzer?” His smirk widened, but the humor didn’t reach his eyes. "They disappear." The threat was clear, but I wasn’t backing down. "Is that why you’re here? To make me disappear? Don't think you can scare me off and if you’re here for that, you’ve wasted your time because I’m not stopping my investigation." I clenched my fist with the determination not to show any weakness Julian's expression shifted, a flicker of amusement replaced by something darker. "Who said anything about scaring you off? I’m here to make you an offer." My brows furrowed. "An offer? What could you possibly offer me?" "Information," he said smoothly. "I’ve the answers to the questions you’ve been asking and if you want the truth about my family, about my brother Alessandro’s betrayal and my wife Sophia’s death? I can give you that. But it comes at a price." No one had any idea about Sophia Barbieri’s death; it had always been shrouded in mystery, and Alessandro’s betrayal had left a trail of blood and broken alliances. I hesitated, the weight of his words sinking in. If Julian was willing to talk, it could be the break I needed to blow this story wide open. "What’s the price?" I asked cautiously. Julian stepped closer, his presence was overwhelming. "You work for me. From now on, you report to me. Every lead you follow, every discovery you make—it all comes to me first." Accepting his offer would mean stepping into the lion’s den, risking everything for the truth. I stared at him with my mind racing but if I refused, I’d be walking away from the biggest story of my career—and possibly my only chance to uncover what happened to Sophia. “You want me to betray my principles?” I asked, my voice laced with defiance. Julian shrugged. “Think of it as a collaboration. I get what I want and you get the story of a lifetime”. “I don't think I can accept such an offer because I don't trust you”. I bluntly said. “You shouldn't,” he replied with a small smile. “But trust isn't necessary for this arrangement. All you need is ambition—and I can see you have plenty of that”. Before I could respond, my phone buzzed In my pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at the screen. It was a text from my editor, Mark. Call me ASAP there is a big deal concerning Barbieri's story. Julian's eyes flicked to the phone with his unreadable expression. “You should answer that. But remember, Rory, every move you make from now on—-I’m watching”. He turned with that and disappeared into the crowd, leaving me standing there, my mind a whirlwind of confusion and dread. I dialed Mark's number, my hand trembling slightly. “Rory,” Mark’s voice came through the line. It was urgent and exciting. “I just got a tip. There's new evidence linking Julian Barbieri to a series of unsolved murders. This could be the breakthrough we’ve been waiting for”. I glanced in the direction Julian had gone, his ominous warning still echoing in my ears. "Mark," I said slowly, "you have no idea how dangerous this story is.” “That’s why you're the best, and I believe you're in the best position to handle this job” Mark confidently replied. “You're fearless. So are you in?”. I hesitated with the weight of the decision that was pressing down on me. Julian had made it clear that stepping further into his world would come with risks and I wasn't sure if I was ready to take such a risk but the truth was tantalizingly close, just within reach, and the painful part was I wasn't aware he was the same man I had been looking for—The man I had a one night stand with. “Rory,” Mark prompted, "are you there?” I took a deep breath, my resolve hardening in contemplation. “deal accepted I’m in for the job,” I said, my voice steady. But as I hung up, a single question lingered in my mind: Had I just made a deal with the devil—or was I already too deep to turn back?
