Secrets in the Shadows. “Why are we here, Rory?” Lily whispered as she nervously adjusted her sunglasses trying to blend into the bustling streets of downtown Manhattan. I glanced at her with a sly smile creeping onto my lips. “Because Lily, this is the only place Julian's secrets might unravel. Trust me, it's worth the risk”. Lily sighed heavily. “High-stakes poker clubs? Really? Do you even know what we're getting into?” “I didn't, not entirely. But that didn't matter. Julian had been lying to me for months pretending to be just another businessman while keeping me in the dark about the empire he controlled. I couldn't ignore the rumors—-any longer—the whisper was about illegal deals, hidden alliances, and a poker club that only the elite dared to step into. If I wanted answers, this was the place to start. We approached the inconspicuous building, its entrance guarded by two men in tailored suits. Their watchful eyes scanned every moment on the street. My heart pounded as I smoothed my dress and walked confidently towards them. “Name?” One of the guards asked with a cold tone. “Rory Welles,” I replied, meeting his gaze. My voice was steady, though my palms were clammy. “I have an invitation” Lucy shot me a panicked look but stayed silent. The guard stood still, motioning us to enter; they nodded, gazing at us. The revealing, dimly lit room was filled with laughter when the door creaked open; there were clinking glasses and the unmistakable tension of high-stakes gambling, which made us terrified. The scent of cigars and expensive perfume filled the atmosphere inside. The club was luxurious, made with velvet drapes, golden chandeliers, and polished tables where fortunes were won and lost. I scanned the room, searching for something, possibly anything that might connect Julian to this place. “You look lost,” a deep voice drawled from behind me. I sharply turned coming face to face with a man whose dark eyes seemed to see right through me. He was well dressed exuding power and confidence. “Am just enjoying the atmosphere,” I said, forcing a smile. “You’ve got to be careful, darling,” he replied with a smirk. “This isn't a place for amateurs.” He walked away, leaving me with more determination than ever”. Lucy tugged on my sleeve. “Rory, I don't think this is a good idea; we've got to leave this place before we get into trouble.” “No! Not yet” I said firmly. “I need to know more about Julian and what he's hiding. And if he's connected to this place, I’ll find out”. We moved through the room, observing the players. At one table there was a man who flipped his card with an air of arrogance. At another, a woman laughed as she raked in chips. But my focus shifted when I saw a door marked private at the back of the club. “You need to cover me,” I whispered to Lily. “Why should l? For what? Rory No!”, dont—” I swiftly slipped away before she could stop me; I headed for the door and pushed it open, my curiosity drove me forward. The hallway was quieter with the sound of the club fading behind me. My heels clicked softly against the marble floor as I explored further. Suddenly a familiar voice froze me in my tracks. “Rory Welles, I should have known”. I spun around to find Julian casually leaning against the wall with his arms crossed leaving a smirk on his face. His presence was magnetic and intimidating all at once. “Julian?” I stammered. “What are you doing here?” The better question is, what are you doing here?” His tone was sharp, his eyes narrowing as he stepped closer. “I’ve warned you to stop digging into my business”. My pulse reached but I refused to back down. “So it's true you own this place”. Julian sighed, running a hand through his dark hair, “You really couldn't leave it alone, could you? I have told you earlier on that there are things about me you’re better off not knowing and It's better you know this for yourself”. I shot back. “The truth is you’ve been lying to me about everything and that's not a better decision to make” I thought he might walk away when he hardened his expression for a moment but instead, he grabbed my arm, pulling me into an empty room. The door clicked shut behind us, and the tension in the air was suffocating. “Do you even have any idea what you've gotten yourself into?” he hissed with his voice low but furious. “Rory, you’re playing with fire, and you should be aware that this is not a game.” “That’s not my business I don't care,” I said, meeting his gaze. “I deserved to know the truth, who are you, Julian?” He stared at me with his jaw tightening. “You won't understand”. “Then you'll have to try me”. His shoulders slumped, and he stood still for a long moment without saying anything then he let out a heavy sigh. "Fine. Do you want the truth? I own this club. I run it, along with other…businesses. Some are legal, some not. It’s how I’ve built my empire." My breath caught. Although I had suspected this as much, hearing it now confirms another thing entirely. "You even kept this hidden, defending your lies but why didn’t you tell me?" "Because the less you know, the safer you are," he said, his tone softening. "The people I deal with, the world I live in—it’s dangerous, Rory. I didn’t want you caught up in it." "But I’m already caught up in it," I argued. "You made that choice the moment you lied to me." Julian took a step closer, his eyes locked on mine. "Then let me make this clear: if you keep pushing, if you keep digging into my life, you’ll regret it.” I swallowed hard, fear mingling with a strange thrill. “Is that a threat?” “Not just a threat but a warning,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Stay out of this, Rory. This is for your good”. He turned to leave but I grabbed his arm. “Wait. Why is this matter so much to you? What are you even protecting me for?” Julian hesitated with a conflicted expression. “Some truths are better left hidden,” he finally said. “But with time you’ll thank me later” And with that, he was gone, leaving me alone in the room with my mind racing with various questions. What was he hiding? And why did I feel like this was only the beginning?
