The proposal.
I sat across from Julian in his sprawling office, my heart thundering in my chest. The room was bathed in soft light, with the faint hum of the city below creating a strange sense of calm.
Julian leaned back in his chair with his gaze piercing and unreadable.
“Rory,” he began, his voice low and measured, “I’m about to offer you something that could change your life. But first you need to understand this isn't a game”.
“I’m listening.” I swallowed hard, trying to maintain my composure.
Julian’s lips curled into a faint smile. “Good. I’m prepared to grant you exclusive access to my world. You’ll see things few people ever get to see. In return I need your silence—-no questions, no snooping, and absolute loyalty”.
I blinked and was stunned by the audacity of his proposal. “You want me to stay quiet about….. whatever it's you’re hiding?”
“Precisely”. His tone was calm but carried an undertone of warning. “This isn't a negotiation, Rory. If you accept, there will be rules, boundaries and breaking them won't end well for the both of us”
My mind raced as I stared at him. Julian had always been enigmatic, but his offer was something else entirely. “Why me? Can't you look for someone else?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Why trust me with something so big?”
“You've got to do this, I choose you because you're clever,” he simply said. ‘And because you've also proven that you can keep secrets”.
I hesitated with the weight of his words sinking in. “What happens if I say no?”
Julian's smile faded. “Then we part ways, and you go back to your life. But make no mistake, Rory—once you walk away, there's no coming back”.
“And if I refused to comply with this?” I swiftly interjected.
“Then you’ll face the consequences of your actions”
The room fell silent as I weighed my options. I knew Julian’s world was dangerous, but the allure of stepping into his universe was irresistible. Still, the unknown loomed over me like a dark cloud.
“What kind of boundaries are we talking about?” I asked cautiously.
Julian leaned forward, his expression serious. “If you ever try to question my decisions again, you regret ever being born because I don't understand why you pry into matters that don’t concern you. And most importantly, you stay out of harm’s way.”
“And in return, I get…what exactly?”
“Access,” he said smoothly. “You’ll have access to connections and many opportunities you can’t even imagine.”
“This looks interesting but I don't think I can't embark on such a risk” I whispered to myself although the offer was too tempting to resist a part of me couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to this deal than he was letting on; “And what’s in it for you?” I challenged myself.
Julian’s eyes darkened. “Peace of mind.”
I frowned. “That’s vague.”
“Don't joke with this offer. It's the best answer you’re going to get,” he said firmly. “Now, do we have a deal?”
I took a deep breath, my mind a whirlwind of doubts and questions. “And if I break the rules?”
Julian’s gaze turned icy. “You won’t.”
The air between us grew tense, and I realized I was teetering on the edge of something monumental. “Fine,” I said finally. “I’ll do it. But I’m trusting you, Julian. Don’t make me regret this.”
His expression softened, just enough to reveal a flicker of something human. “You won’t.”
When the next day dragged in, it was a blur. True to his word, Julian opened doors I hadn't even known existed.
Lavish parties, high-stakes deals, and a network of powerful individuals–all were within my reach, but with every new experience came more questions.
“Julian”, I said one evening as we walked through a grand art gallery. “Why are you doing all of this? And what's the catch?”
He stopped in front of a painting with his hands in his pockets. “Do you always need to know ‘why,’ Rory?”
“Yes, I’m interested in knowing such secrets,” I said without hesitation. “Especially when it feels like I’m being kept in the dark”.
Julian chuckled softly. “Curiosity can be dangerous; I believe you're aware.”
“So I’ve been told”. I crossed my arms, refusing to let him deflect. “Are you going to answer me or not?”
He turned to face me with an unreadable expression. “There are things that are better kept hidden, trust me on this”.
“I’ve trusted you so far, but on this, and you know that for sure,” I said pointedly. But that doesn't mean I don't have doubts.
“Good,” he said, surprising me. “You need to be aware that doubt keeps you sharp but don't just let it consume you”.
His cryptic response only fueled my suspicion. What was he even hiding? And why does it feel like I was being drawn deeper into a web I couldn't escape?”
Weeks later I found myself alone In Julian's penthouse, sorting through a stack of documents he’d left for me.
After flipping through his documents I discovered that most of it was his routine, but one file caught my attention—it was a list of names all crossed out except for one.
I got hooked staring at the name at the bottom of the page as my stomach knotted. “What is this?” I muttered to myself.
Julian's voice came from behind me, making me jump. “Never intrigued by my privacy; this is something you shouldn't be looking at.”
“I wasn't snooping,” I quickly said as I spun around to find him leaning against the doorframe with an unreadable expression that sent shivers down my spine. “Your documents were just sitting here, so I thought of helping you arrange the file properly”.
“And you thought it was meant for you?” he asked with his cold tone.
“I didn't know what it was,” I admitted. “But now I’m wondering why it's such a big deal not to read through”.
Julian strode into the room and snatched the file from my hands. “You're treading on dangerous ground, Rory”.
I bristled at his tone. “You can’t expect me to stay silent when you’re keeping secrets like this.”
“I expect you to follow the rules,” he snapped. “Or have you forgotten the deal we made?”
His words stung, but I refused to back down. “Maybe I wouldn’t have to break the rules if you were honest with me.”
Julian’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, I thought he might open up. But then he turned away, the conversation over.
I muttered to myself. “Why does it feel like I have made a deal with the devil?”.
I started contemplating what to do next while staring at the city lights from my window.
The sound of my buzzing phone broke through my thoughts, making me wonder who the caller may be so I glanced at the screen and saw an unknown number. I hesitated for a moment before I could answer.
“Rory,” a voice said, it was low and urgent. “To be honest, you're in danger”.
My heart skipped a beat. “Who is this?”.
“There's no time for explanation,” the voice continued. “If you value your life you need to get out of that house immediately”.
“Get out?” I repeated as panic crept into my voice. “What are you talking about?”
“Julian isn't who you think he is; he was the one at the masquerade event.” The voice said, just before the line went dear.
“At the masquerade event? Could he be the mysterious stranger I had a one-night stand with?” I whispered to myself staring at my phone with my mind racing.
What's happening and who could I trust?
