Nick’s eyes were wide as he surveyed the scene through the flight deck forward windows. In the distance, he had no idea how far away, was a bright, white star. The inky blackness surrounding it was the same all-enveloping nothing they’d detected before entering this void. But what was most startling was the far-away moving objects that were visible for brief seconds at a time as they crossed in front of the smallish white star, like shadows against the eerie brightness.
They had to be ships. Ships of all sizes and configurations. They appeared and disappeared into the darkness as they passed between the Hunter and the star. Nick estimated there must be tens, maybe hundreds, of vessels orbiting the strange star.
