June. “What do you want from me, Ralph?” “I just wanted to talk.” “I don’t think we have anything to talk about with you.” I kept my hand on the door, ready to shut it in his face if he pushed me too far. The hallway outside my apartment was dimly lit, the flickering bulb above us buzzing loudly in the silence between us. Ralph looked terrible. His hoodie was wrinkled as he had slept in it, his eyes red and tired. For once, he didn’t have one of his sarcastic comments ready. He just stood there looking restless. Nervous. Almost scared. I should’ve enjoyed it after everything he’d put me through. Instead, uneasiness crawled up my spine.
