Chapter 01
“Tell me where you are,” There was a pause.
“I’m coming to pick you up…”
I couldn’t speak, the words were hanging in my throat, and I was struggling to bring them out with this unsettling feeling in the pit of my stomach. I stood with the phone pressed against my ear.
“June.” That was the sexiest way anyone has ever called my name. I flapped my eyes and snapped out of it.
That was Alpha Kazimir, my best friend’s father. I needed to gather my thoughts, and this was the second time he was calling my name, though I have been friends with his daughter Ariana for four years.
I was supposed to be on my way to ShadowFang Pack for Ariana’s birthday party, but the rain wouldn’t stop falling. My boyfriend Ralph was supposed to pick me up. We planned on attending the party together.
But he was an hour late.
I have been calling for over an hour, and he wasn’t taking my calls. I can’t believe he stood me up for this.
“I’m still at Emerald Pack, outside the Med school gate.”
There was another pause from his end. “Are you somewhere safe?”
I glanced at the small shade I was hiding in, and I moved further towards the wall, my shoes were getting drenched.
I sunk in my lower lip before I uttered a response. “Not for long.”
“I will be there to pick you…”
“You don’t have to—.”
My phone beeped, and when I checked, he hung up. I let out a deep breath, I never knew I was holding the entire time I was talking with him.
I’m in this mess because of Ralph, and I tried calling one more time.
“…Hello, this is Ralph, kindly leave a message.”
I groaned and tucked my phone into my clutch bag.
It was over thirty minutes, and getting close to another hour, the cold was getting into my skin. I couldn’t keep waiting, I had to get out, find a cab, and get a train that’s going to ShadowFang Pack.
I stepped out of the hiding place and started to make a run under the rain when I saw the headlights of a black car in my direction.
I slowed and eventually came to a halt. I was still standing in the rain, the glass of the car lowered, and the door opened. “Get in,” the deep, authoritative voice said from the back.
I hesitated before taking another step.
Then he stared at me, he had this eye color that looked like bronze, his posture at the back of the car was cold and confident.
“I won’t say it again.”
I got into the car and the door slammed. I caught his eyes on my body the second I sat down, the water running from my hair down to my damp silicone blouse, which was sticking to my skin, he could see the lines of my black bra cupping my breast in it.
I swallowed and adjusted in the seat, giving some distance between us.
“Can I drive, Alpha?”
“Turn off the AC.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
“Drive.” He ordered, and the driver drove out. I had my gaze out, I didn’t want to take a chance to look at him.
“I told you to wait, why did you get in the rain?” He sounded annoyed.
“You were getting late, and I was cold.”
“I was in a meeting.”
I stole a glance at me, he was staring at me, his suit jacket was off his body, and before I could say another word, the jacket went over my body, the warmth it brought, and his cologne.
I was surprised when he called me.
It was Ariana. I had called to inform her that I would be late for her birthday because of the situation. I never expected her to call her dad, who was in a meeting at Emerald Pack, to come pick me up.
“Today is Ariana’s birthday, I thought you would be home with her.” My words were breaking, with the sudden closeness and his hand that brushed over my shoulders.
I got a shiver running down my skin.
“She’s 23, she's an adult.” He leaned back, and picked up a magazine, flipping through it.
“And the meeting is important, I couldn’t let anyone mess with what I owed.”
I swallowed and didn’t say another word, I took my gaze towards the car window, giving myself some time out.
The first time he called me was when Ariana got sick in school, his hand had gone around my shoulders, to stop me from panicking. Then he called my name. “June.” His voice had registered in my head ever since.
Even in my wildest dreams, I could identify his voice.
We got into his private jet, which was in an open field, and that was how we got to ShadowFang Pack. He didn’t speak to me again.
I held tight to his jacket, covering up.
“Welcome Home, Alpha.”
This was my first time in the pack. Ariana always had her birthdays in school until she graduated and went back to her pack.
And this was it, the infamous ShadowFang Pack. It felt like I was walking in a land made of gold and blood.
“Where’s Ariana?”
“She stepped out.”
I was walking obliviously with my eyes wandering around the house, it was so big and beautifully decorated, my head hit against something a bit hard, I lifted my head and met the sharp jawline of Alpha Kazimir. He lowered his head towards the side of my face.
I waited for his words, to hear his voice.
But nothing came.
And then he pulled back.
“Show her to Ariana’s room. You will be dismissed when she comes. She wants the house all to herself tonight.”
“Yes, Alpha.” The maid bowed and gestured toward her.
I followed the maid upstairs, being gentle with my steps. I felt his gaze behind me, I knew that he was watching me, and if he knew that I did the same too.
“Ralph.”
“I can’t believe you’re calling me now!” I was yelling over the phone while I tried to dry my hair.
“I’m sorry, June. I got caught up with something, and I couldn’t make it.”
“You should have told me,”
“You left me waiting for you over an hour outside that cold, as if you had forgotten about me.”
“It wasn’t intentional.”
“Oh f**k you.”
“I will make it up to you, I promise, you know that I love you.”
I sighed, he knows how to get me, and I was calm listening to him speak about the reason he couldn’t come.
A knock distracted me, and that voice.
A voice that I couldn’t resist, the instant I heard it, my head snapped back.
“June, open the door.”
