CHAPTER 1
Cold.
That was the first thing Pearl felt when she opened her eyes.
A violent cough escaped her lips as seawater rushed from her mouth. Her body trembled against the wet sand while rain poured heavily from the dark sky above. Waves crashed loudly behind her, as if the ocean itself was alive and angry.
Pearl slowly pushed herself up, breathing hard.
Alive.
She was alive.
Her silver hair clung to her pale skin as confusion clouded her mind. She remembered drowning. She remembered darkness swallowing her whole.
So why was she here?
“No…” she whispered weakly.
Her fingers pressed into the sand.
“I died…”
The memory came back in flashes.
Blood in the water.
Screams echoing beneath the sea.
Pain tearing through her chest.
Then—
Ella.
Pearl’s breathing shook violently at the name she could not yet fully understand.
“I am still alive,” she whispered to herself again, voice breaking.
“How am I still alive?”
Lightning flashed across the sky.
A sudden sharp pain struck her legs and she collapsed onto the sand with a gasp. Tiny silver scales appeared briefly on her skin before vanishing like mist.
Pearl stared at herself in fear.
“No…”
The wind grew colder.
Then she heard it.
A voice.
Soft.
Ancient.
“The sea has returned what belongs to it.”
Pearl froze completely.
“Who’s there?” she asked, fear tightening her throat.
Only silence answered her.
The ocean slowly crept closer to her feet, almost gently, almost like it was recognizing her.
Pearl wrapped her arms around herself, trembling.
Why was she alive?
Who brought her back?
And why did the ocean feel like it was calling her?
Another flash of lightning cut through the sky, and suddenly memories began to flood her mind.
Years ago…
Before betrayal.
Before death.
Before everything shattered.
She was in the Kingdom of Azurith.
A breathtaking underwater kingdom where glowing corals lit up golden palaces and schools of shimmering fish moved like living jewels through the water.
At the center stood the royal palace.
And inside it lived two sisters.
Pearl and Ella.
Their father, King Thalor, ruled the ocean with strength and wisdom. He loved both daughters, but the kingdom naturally adored Pearl more.
She was gentle. Kind. Always helping others without thinking twice.
Ella was different.
Sharp.
Distant.
Quietly burning with emotions she never knew how to control.
And there was Charles.
Charles had grown up inside the palace with them. He trained with warriors, studied politics, and spent most of his life around the royal family.
As children, all three of them were inseparable.
But as they grew older, things began to change.
Pearl did not notice it.
But Ella did.
And Charles… he felt it too.
Charles loved Ella.
Deeply.
But fate had already written a different path for him.
He had been promised to Pearl since birth.
Not by love.
By duty.
And so he stayed close to Pearl, even when his heart pulled him elsewhere.
Even when his eyes always searched for Ella first.
Even when it hurt.
Pearl never knew.
She never saw it clearly.
She only saw two people she cared about drifting in different directions, without understanding why.
One evening, Pearl sat alone in the royal gardens. Glowing jellyfish drifted around her like floating stars while soft currents moved through the palace walls.
“You’re hiding again.”
Pearl turned at the voice.
Charles swam toward her slowly.
His dark hair moved gently in the water, and his expression looked tired.
Pearl smiled faintly. “I needed quiet.”
He sat beside her.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Charles sighed.
“She’s angry with me again.”
Pearl already knew who he meant.
“Ella?” she asked softly.
He nodded.
Pearl looked down.
“She cares about you,” she said gently.
Charles gave a short, painful laugh.
“That’s the problem.”
Silence stretched between them.
Then Charles spoke again, quieter this time.
“I never wanted things to be like this.”
Pearl looked at him.
“I know,” she said honestly.
His jaw tightened slightly.
“My heart… it never followed the path chosen for me.”
Pearl didn’t fully understand what he meant, but something inside her felt heavy.
Before she could ask, a voice cut through the water.
“Of course.”
They both turned.
Ella stood at the edge of the garden.
Watching them.
Her expression was calm.
Too calm.
Pearl quickly stood up.
“Ella—”
But Ella ignored her.
Her eyes stayed on Charles.
“You say one thing,” Ella said softly, “but your eyes always say another.”
Charles frowned. “That’s not—”
“Don’t,” Ella interrupted quietly.
A long silence followed.
Then Ella finally looked at Pearl.
And for a moment, something flickered across her face.
Something sharp.
Something broken.
But Pearl did not notice.
She only felt confusion.
Because she still didn’t understand what was happening beneath the surface.
Not yet.
And that ignorance would cost her everything.
