Chapter 6: The Trial???
Ray shook the officer’s hand and shut the door watching him leave. He then ran to the kitchen with a smile on his face. “Sam we got him… we finally got him. the police brought him in today I guess his “friends” couldn’t help him get out of this jam.” He said picking her up and spinning her around. She was in shock; she couldn’t believe that he was finally brought in but she felt like everything was happening too easily. “They’re not telling us something Ray…I have a gut feeling that there’s more to this and I can’t shake it.” She said now even more worried about this situation.
Rays smile quickly went away and he thought about what she just said and nodded. “we’ll look into it a little more She watched him take out his best suit, cap and gown. He made his way to the bathroom to take a shower and the phone rang she picked up the phone and an elderly lady answers. “Hello??? Raymond? Is that you?” she asked muffled. “No Mrs. Walker it’s Samantha Ray’s in the shower I’ll let him know you called.” Sam said but heard a loud click before she got a chance to say anything else. Ray got out of the shower and checked in on her. “Who was on the phone babe?” he asked and she turned around, she gasped a little. He stood in front of her wearing only a towel she cleared her mind and answered “That was your mother although I couldn’t understand her.” She said looking at the towel loosely tied around his waist.
“She still has that old cell phone” he said laughing then pulled her close to him. Their eyes met and his breath became shallow “if you keep looking at me like that I’ll
never make it to my ceremony and you’ll never get to go to the office.” He said eyes locked on her. She pulled away and walked to the living room to let him get ready and he smiled as he watched her walk away. After he finally got
ready he came to her to see if he looked ok “You look great Ray.” She said fixing his tie, she looked at him putting on his cap and gown and she couldn’t be so proud.
He left for graduation and she was on her way to her office, when she got there a man she didn’t know was sitting at Ray’s desk waiting for her apparently. “Are you always late for work Samantha?” he asked looking her up and down. She wanted to punch him in the face but then calmed herself; she didn’t know this man so the least she could do was ask his name and what he was doing here. “Do I know you? And if I do why are you here?” she asked and he smiled and stood up. “Randall Johnson at your service I’m your lawyer I was sent by Harrison.” He held out hand for a shake and she just looked at him. “Of course Harrison would help me” she thought to herself.
Well she was trapped and she knew it because Harrison Thomas doesn’t take no for an answer so she shook his hand and they went into her office to go over what’s gonna happen now that Michael has agreed to go to trial. “Don’t you think it’s a little suspicious that he would just give in like this? It’s not that I’m not happy but I feel like there’s something else to this.” Samantha said and he nodded “Yes I don’t know what he and his lawyer have up
their sleeve but they will stop at nothing to get this case acquitted but don’t worry I’m here to make sure that doesn’t happen” he assured her.
She knew Michael and how shady he can be… she had a bad feeling about this case but she still wanted to see it through even if she ends up losing for all the wrong reasons. “You do have an assistant don’t you?” he asked looking around and she nodded. “He has his graduation ceremony today so I’m solo today.” He looked at her questionably “how old is the boy?” he asked curious and she just gave a cold stare and he dropped it. Randall left her office with the files they worked on for the trial when who should walk in but Michael himself.
“What are you doing here?” she asked getting up from her desk. “I came to talk you out of even going to trial, it doesn’t make since we’ve both moved on…you especially so why does it have to go this far?” he asked and she gave him a look “you might as well just go with it Michael because I am not changing my mind and you can’t sneak your way out of this situation.” She said, Michael became furious and shot out “ok you wanna go the hard way? Ok Samantha just don’t be upset when we win… 3 weeks from now I’ll be a free man and you’ll pay dearly.” He stomped out of her office only to bump into an elderly woman but he kept walking.
Mrs. Walker came in with a big smile on her face “Samantha baby I didn’t know that was you on the phone I’m so sorry how are you?” she said giving her a big hug. Samantha loved Ray’s mother, she reminded her of her own mother and she knew she was more proud of Ray than she was. “Where is Raymond now?” she asked but he walked into the room. “We need to talk so can you excuse us mama?” he said looking right at Sam and his mother nodded, smiled up at Samantha and left the room.
“You could’ve told me you were gonna bring your mom here…she looks good.” She said fumbling with the papers and smiling but his face remained the same. “What was he doing here Samantha?” he asked staring at her; she looked down and said nothing. “Did he hurt you? Say anything? What happened?” he asked quickly. “I’m fine; he just wanted to convince me not to take this to trial, he said it shouldn’t matter since we both moved on… me especially.” She said walking towards the door, he looked like a fool and he hated the way he acted towards her so he followed her and hugged her from behind. “I’m sorry it’s just that I don’t want him to hurt you anymore and with the trial coming up I just want you to be relaxed.” He said feeling like an ass, she never realized how much Ray
actually cared about her until that very moment and she was happy he was with her.
The next 2 weeks flew by really fast and it was only a couple of days before the trial. Samantha was nervous and both Sandy and Ray could tell. “Don’t worry Sam you have a really good lawyer and you pretty much have all of the evidence so you’ll win this case in no time. It might be the shortest trial in history.” Sandy said smiling but Sam didn’t return the smile. She felt like there were butterflies attacking her stomach, she knew this day was coming but for it to come so fast she could handle all of the emotions she was feeling at once. She took a deep breath and finally said “we should toast to this.” She went to get some wine and glasses and gave them each a full glass.
“To justice soon coming Samantha’s way.” Sandy said as they all joined they’re glasses. Sam smiled, she was happy that she had them to keep her stronger than she already was alone. Sandy went home and Sam came into the living room to find Ray resting on the couch, “well this was a way to celebrate a victory we don’t have yet.” She said sitting next to him and he frowned “you still think he might win? Come on everything is on our side babe.” He
said hold hugging her close. She really hoped he was right because tomorrow was going to be a hell of a day.
“Today is the day” she thought as she and Raymond woke up on the couch and she got ready to take a shower. Ray could sense how nervous she was and he was starting to feel the same way she did. What if there was a loophole that Michael found to get himself out of this one… he pushed the thought out of his mind he had to follow his gut, he knew Michael wouldn’t get away with what he did to Sam. They both got ready and she helped him with his tie. ”I feel like this is judgment day babe.” She said pulling the tie tight “I know baby but whatever happens we’re in this together.” He said smiling down at her, she gave him a swift kiss and they left for the courthouse.
Sandy was already at the courthouse waiting for them to pull up; they got out of Ray’s car to see what was up. “Sandy? What is it? What’s wrong?” Sam said walking towards her, she saw Sandy’s face and didn’t like the feeling she was getting in her gut. “Randall is waiting for
you inside… I think you should go in alone.” She said her head down not bothering to look up. Sam ran up the stairs to the building and found Randall. “What’s going on? What’s with the look?” she said getting really nervous.
“They dropped case Sam…I’m so sorry” he said looking at her feeling like a failure he watched as she just slid to the floor. Michael walked out of the courthouse and passed them; he looked at them and gave them a smirk and a wink and walk away. Sam felt the sting of her tears and just let go, she sobbed until Ray came up to get her and take her home.
She knew her gut would be right and now she’s even more scared than she was the first time she made the report on Michael. They got home and Ray couldn’t find any words to say. “Baby….I …. I’m so sorry” he said trying to hug her but she nudged away. “I just knew this would happen… why did I ignore my gut?” she said crying again. Ray felt so helpless, he hated seeing her like this it made him feel like he failed at being there for her and he wanted to always make her feel safe. She ran to him and hugged him close.
Ray held her as they sat on the couch “Baby I don’t want you to worry about anything… I’ll always protect you.” He said kissing her forehead and she kissed him deeply. “I love you Ray” she said hugging him tight, Ray closed his eyes and felt a big grin on his face. It felt good to hear her say that.
