Chapter 4: The Fragile Mask

1140 Words
The morning sun filtered softly through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the sunroom, casting long, golden geometric patterns across the polished marble floor. Outside, birds chirped merrily around the manicured rose gardens, but inside the mansion, the air felt thick enough to suffocate on. Aria sat quietly at the glass breakfast table, wearing a simple, soft lavender dress that clung modestly to her frame. A single mug of black coffee sat untouched in front of her, swirling with thin wisps of steam. Her reflection in the dark liquid showed dark circles underneath her eyes, a quiet tribute to another sleepless night under Xavier's roof. Across the long table sat Xavier, pristine as always in a charcoal bespoke suit, his dark tie drawn tight against his collar. He flicked through financial reports on his tablet, his movements sharp, precise, and completely ignoring her presence. Ever since he had cornered her in the conservatory two nights ago, calling her a mercenary just like her father, a heavy wall of ice had solidified between them. The soft tap of designer high heels against the marble floor shattered the heavy silence. "Oh, Xavier! Good morning, darling!" The voice was sweet, airy, and dripping with delicate affection. Aria looked up as Chloe Montgomery glided into the sunroom like a vision of pure elegance. She wore a tailored ivory dress that hugged her slenderness perfectly, her blonde hair falling in soft, cascading waves over her shoulders. She carried a small, decorative tin of hand-rolled pastries. Xavier set his tablet down on the glass table, his sharp features relaxing slightly as his gaze shifted toward her. "Chloe. What are you doing here so early?" "I was at the bakery around the corner and remembered how much you love their almond croissants," Chloe purred, stepping right up to Xavier’s side. She leaned down, resting a light, manicured hand on his shoulder as she placed the tin beside his plate. "You've been working so hard lately. I brought breakfast." Aria felt a faint prickle of irritation at the base of her neck. Chloe hadn't even spared her a glance, acting as though Xavier were the sole inhabitant of the sprawling estate. "You didn't have to do that," Xavier said, his deep baritone carrying a rare hint of softness that Aria had never once heard directed at her. "Nonsense! We've known each other since we were children, Xavier. Taking care of you comes naturally to me," Chloe replied with a gentle laugh. She finally turned her head, her soft blue eyes landing on Aria as if noticing her for the very first time. "Oh! Good morning, Aria. I hope I’m not intruding." Aria forced her posture straight, placing her hands neatly in her lap. "Good morning, Miss Montgomery. You're welcome to join us." Chloe let out a small, musical chuckle, pulling out the chair directly adjacent to Xavier, completely ignoring the empty seat further down the table. She sat gracefully, crossing her legs, her gaze sweeping over Aria’s modest dress and her untouched coffee with an expression of faint, patronizing pity. "Please, call me Chloe," she said softly, tilting her head. "We're going to be seeing a lot of each other now that you're married to Xavier. Though... I must admit, I was a little surprised when I saw what you chose to wear today." Aria blinked, taken aback by the sudden pivot. "My dress?" "It’s very... charming," Chloe offered with a gentle smile, though her eyes were sharp as ice. "A bit casual for the mistress of the Sterling Estate, don't you think? In high society, the wife of a CEO reflects his standing before the board. Simple department-store cuts can give investors the wrong impression about the family's financial stability. But then, I suppose your family has been going through quite a bit of financial strain lately, hasn't it?" The insult was wrapped in such a sweet, melodic tone that anyone listening might have thought Chloe was offering genuine advice. Aria felt her knuckles whiten against her lap. "My wardrobe doesn't affect Xavier's stock prices, Miss Montgomery," Aria said evenly, keeping her voice calm and steady despite the heat rising in her cheeks. "And my family's affairs are private." "Of course, dear," Chloe said quickly, placing a hand over her heart in a gesture of delicate apology. "I didn't mean to offend you. It's just that Xavier is used to a certain level of... refinement around him. Growing up with him, I know how much he values perfection and tradition." Xavier remained silent, taking a slow sip from his porcelain coffee cup, his dark eyes observing the exchange between the two women over the rim. He offered no defense for his new wife, his silence speaking volumes. "Allow me to pour you some tea, Aria," Chloe offered sweetly, reaching for the heavy silver teapot resting on the warming trivet in the center of the table. "As a small peace offering. We really should get along." "That's not necessary..." Aria began, reaching out to politely decline. "Oh, I insist!" Chloe chirped, lifting the teapot. As Chloe tilted the heavy silver pot over Aria’s porcelain cup, her wrist suddenly gave a sharp, unnatural jerk. "Ah!" With a shrill, theatrical gasp, Chloe let go of the handle. Steaming, scalding tea splashed dramatically across the table, drenching the front of Chloe’s pristine ivory dress and spilling onto her lap. The silver pot clattered heavily onto the glass tabletop, sending hot liquid splashing everywhere. "Chloe!" Xavier was on his feet in a fraction of a second. He reached across the table, grabbing a cloth napkin and pulling Chloe back from the table before the hot liquid could soak further into her skin. "Oh, goodness! It hurts!" Chloe cried out softly, her lower lip trembling as tears instantly brimmed in her large, innocent blue eyes. She clutched her hand to her chest, trembling dramatically against Xavier's side. "I'm so sorry, Xavier! I was just trying to serve her, but... but she reached out so fast!" Aria sat frozen in shock, staring at the mess on the table and then up at Chloe’s tear-stained face. "I didn't touch you. You dropped it yourself." Chloe winced, shrinking back into Xavier’s side as if frightened by Aria’s calm statement. "I..I didn't say you meant to do it, Aria! It was an accident! I know you don't like me being here, but I was only trying to be nice!" Xavier’s face darkened into a storm of absolute ice. He held Chloe firmly by her shoulder, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He turned his terrifying, pitch-black gaze onto Aria, his voice dropping into a dangerous, deadly register. "Enough, Aria," Xavier growled, his eyes burning with cold fury. "She was trying to show you courtesy under my roof, and this is how you respond?"
