Chapter 1: The Golden Cage
The black velvet ring box sat on the polished mahogany dining table like a tiny, open coffin. Aria Vance stared at it, her hands clenched so tightly in her lap that her fingernails bit into her palms. Across the table, the scent of heavy perfume and cheap cigars made the air suffocating. Her father, Richard, leaned back in his leather chair, swirling a glass of scotch as if he hadn't spent the last six months systematically destroying everything her mother had built. It had only been three months since her mother died. Three short, agonizing months. Yet, before the earth on her mother’s grave was even settled, Richard had brought them into the house: Nora, his newly minted wife with her shrill, artificial laugh, and Bianca, Nora’s twenty-three-year-old daughter, whose fake diamond earrings caught the chandelier light with every arrogant toss of her head. They hadn't just moved in; they had invaded. Her mother’s vintage oil paintings had been hauled off to storage, replaced by gold-leaf monstrosities Nora bought on Richard’s dwindling credit cards. Her mother’s rose garden was paved over to make room for Bianca’s sports car. And Aria once a beloved daughter had been quietly stripped of her home, her dignity, and her future, reduced to little more than an unpaid maid in her own house. "Eat your soup, Aria," Nora purred, not looking up as she carefully cut into her rare filet mignon. Her manicured nails were painted a fierce, blood red. "You’re looking pale. We can't have you looking like a ghost in front of the photographers next week." Aria’s stomach churned. She looked at the bowl of lukewarm vegetable broth sitting in front of her. "I’m not hungry." "You don't have the luxury of an appetite right now, girl," her father snapped, slamming his glass onto the table. Liquid sloshed over the rim, staining the white linen tablecloth. "Look at this house! Look at these bills! The creditors are pounding on the front door every morning! Do you think money grows on trees?" "It used to grow in Mom’s trust fund," Aria said, her voice quiet, trembling with a mix of raw grief and boiling fury. "Before you liquidated her accounts. Before you bought Bianca a brand-new car while selling Mom’s handmade jewelry at an auction." Bianca gasped dramatically, dropping her silver fork onto her plate with a sharp clatter. "Mom! Listen to her! She’s attacking us again! All I did was try to fit into this family!" "Enough!" Richard shouted, his face flushing a deep, mottled purple. He stood up, towering over the table, his breath reeking of stale alcohol. "Your mother is dead, Aria! Get that through your stubborn head! She isn't here to protect you, and she isn't here to pay off my debts! You are going to fix this." Aria kept her eyes locked on her father. "What did you do, Dad?" Nora smiled, a slow, cold expression that didn't reach her heavily painted eyes. She reached into her leather handbag, pulled out a thick document bound in dark blue leather, and slid it across the mahogany table. It stopped right next to the open velvet ring box. "Consider it your contribution to the family," Nora whispered. Aria looked down at the gold foil lettering embossed on the cover of the document: MARRIAGE AGREEMENT & DEBT CONSOLIDATION SETTLEMENT. Her heart dropped into her stomach. "Marriage?" "You’re twenty-four, Aria. It’s time you made yourself useful," Richard said, his voice dropping into a hard, transaction-focused tone. "The Vance Group is bankrupt. The banks are foreclosing on this house by the end of the month. But Sterling Enterprises has agreed to buy out our debt and inject twenty million dollars into my firm." Aria’s eyes widened in horror. Sterling Enterprises. Everyone in the city knew that name. It was an empire ruled by Xavier Sterling, a thirty year old billionaire known throughout the corporate world as an unfeeling, ruthless beast. A man who bought failing companies, gutted them for parts, and destroyed anyone who stood in his way. "You sold me?" Aria’s voice cracked. She stood up so fast her chair screeched against the hardwood floor. "You traded me to a stranger for twenty million dollars?!" "Don't be so dramatic, you ungrateful brat!" Nora snapped, dropping her polite facade as her eyes flashed with pure venom. "You’re marrying Xavier Sterling! Half the socialites in the country would crawl through broken glass to wear his ring! You’ll live in a mansion, ride in private jets, and wear diamonds!" "Then let Bianca marry him!" Aria retorted, tears finally spilling over her lashes, burning her cheeks. Bianca laughed.a cruel, mocking sound. "Oh, please. Mr. Sterling doesn't want someone like me. His board demanded a woman with a clean, old-money lineage to fix his ruthless public image. That means you, little orphan girl. You’re his tax write-off and his PR stunt." "I won't do it," Aria whispered, backing away from the table, shaking her head. "I’ll pack my bags. I’ll leave tonight. I’ll sleep on the streets before I let you turn my life into a business contract." Richard sneered. He walked slowly around the table until he was standing right in front of her. He didn't look like her father anymore. He looked like a stranger, a desperate, greedy man willing to burn everything down to save himself. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a key ring. Hanging from it was a small tarnished brass key, the key to the attic storage room where all of her mother’s personal belongings, childhood journals, and family heirlooms were locked away. "You want to leave, Aria?" Richard asked softly, holding the keys up in front of her face. "Go ahead. Walk out that front door." Aria’s breath caught in her throat. "Dad... please." "The moment you step off this property without signing that contract," Richard said, his voice dropping into a cold, merciless threat, "I’m calling the waste disposal company. Every single thing your mother left behind; her dresses, her paintings, her letters, her photo albums will be thrown into a trash compactor and set on fire. By midnight, there won't be a single piece of her left in this world." Aria felt as if all the oxygen had been sucked out of the room. A terrible, suffocating weight pressed down on her chest. She looked at her father’s cruel eyes, at Nora’s smug grin, and at Bianca, who was casually checking her manicured nails. They had taken her home, her inheritance, and her joy. Now, they were holding the last piece of her mother hostage. "You're a monster," Aria choked out, her voice barely a whisper. Richard opened the blue folder, flipped to the final page, and slapped a heavy gold pen down on top of the paper. "You marry Xavier Sterling next week," her father commanded, staring her down with unyielding malice, "or we throw your mother's belongings into the street."
