Chapter 21: Silent Devotion

1275 Words
Morning sun broke through the grey clouds over the Sterling estate, casting golden beams through the glass ceiling of the conservatory. The cold wall between Xavier and Aria still stood thick and unyielding, but beneath the icy exterior of their shared home, quiet currents were beginning to shift. Aria sat at the polished glass breakfast table, stirring a cup of warm water with lemon. Her appetite had been nonexistent for days, weighed down by the heavy emotional distance between them. She expected the usual minimal morning spread, black coffee for Xavier, light toast for herself. Instead, two house staff entered in single file, laying down a lavish feast fit for royalty. There were silver platters of wild organic berries, porcelain bowls of steaming oatmeal drizzled with raw mountain honey, freshly baked whole-grain pastries, and a warm thermos of customized herbal tonic. Aria blinked in confusion, looking up at the head housekeeper. "Mrs. Gable? What is all this? I didn't order any of this." Mrs. Gable smiled warmly, her hands clasped respectfully in front of her crisp apron. "Mr. Sterling left strict instructions before heading to the office at five this morning, Madam. Every ingredient was delivered from an organic farm down south at dawn. He personally reviewed the nutritionist's daily meal plan for your... condition." Aria’s breath caught in her throat. Her hand trembled as she held her spoon. He was furious with her. He had walked out of her room last night leaving behind a chilling ultimatum. Yet, before the sun even rose, his first thought had been her health and the health of the child he wasn't even certain was his. "He... he did?" Aria whispered softly. "Yes, Madam," Mrs. Gable added, her eyes softening with quiet fondness. "He also instructed us to replace all the marble flooring in the east wing corridors with thick, plush runners by this afternoon. He said the hardwood was too slick for comfortable walking." A sharp pang of sweetness and guilt pierced Aria’s chest. She looked at the vibrant red strawberries, taking a slow, hesitant bite. It tasted rich and sweet, but tears welled up in her eyes, threatening to spill over. How could a man be so stern, so fiercely distant, and yet surround her with such overwhelming, protective care? At Sterling Enterprises, the atmosphere inside the top-floor executive suite was pure ice. Xavier sat behind his massive black glass desk, his white dress shirt sleeves rolled neatly to his elbows, exposing his muscular forearms. A towering stack of quarterly financial reports lay before him, but his dark eyes were fixed on his laptop screen... specifically, an encrypted video link to Dr. Harrison's private clinic. Marcus stood at attention across from the desk, holding a leather-bound notebook. "The specialized maternal health nurse has been cleared and placed on standby, Mr. Sterling," Marcus reported crisply. "She will arrive at the estate tomorrow under the guise of an executive wellness consultant to ensure Madam's privacy. All medications prescribed have been tested thrice for safety." Xavier didn't lift his eyes from the screen, his tone deep and tight. "And the stairs? Were the anti-slip guards installed?" "Completed an hour ago, sir. We also cleared all sharp glass decor from the main living rooms." Xavier nodded slowly, his broad jaw clenching. He closed the laptop with a quiet click, leaning back into his leather chair. He rubbed the bridge of his nose, exhaling a long, weary breath. The dark circles under his eyes betrayed his restless, sleepless nights. "Sir..." Marcus hesitated, taking a small step forward. "If I may ask... why not simply confront Madam Aria with the full security footage from the Bellevue Hotel? Why go through this agony when you suspect the child is yours?" Xavier’s dark gaze snapped up, burning with a dangerous, tortured intensity. "Because suspicion isn't enough, Marcus," Xavier said, his voice dropping into a raspy, gravelly register. "If I force her to confess under pressure, she will only ever see me as her jailer. She has spent her entire life surrounded by people who used her, lied to her, and forced her into corners. I want her to come to me. I want her to look into my eyes and give me her trust willingly." He stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline, his hands thrust deep into his suit pockets. "Until then," Xavier growled softly, "I will guard her with everything I have. Even if she hates me for it." By evening, the rain had returned, wrapping the grand estate in a soft, atmospheric mist. Aria walked down the hallway of the east wing, her soft velvet slippers sinking into the thick, plush carpet that hadn't been there that morning. The subtle warmth of the house, the faint scent of fresh jasmine diffuser oil, the carefully rounded edges of newly replaced hallway furniture, every detail whispered his name. She reached Xavier’s private study. The heavy double doors were slightly ajar, a warm golden glow spilling out into the dark corridor. Aria paused, her heart thumping against her ribs like a trapped bird. She stepped closer on tiptoe, peeking through the narrow gap. Xavier was sitting at his grand desk, his jacket off, his tie completely discarded. He had one hand resting on his forehead, his dark eyes fixed intently on a thick medical encyclopedia open in front of him—Navigating First-Trimester Care & High-Risk Pregnancies. On the corner of his desk sat a small, delicate glass jar filled with preserved dried lavender, the exact same scent she always placed on her nightstand to ease her morning sickness. Aria froze, her breath catching in her chest. There sat the feared billionaire, the ruthless titan of the business world, painstakingly taking notes on morning sickness remedies and delicate prenatal care in the quiet hours of the night. His posture was rigid, his expression grave and focused, treating her pregnancy like the most critical contract of his life. Tears sprang to Aria's eyes, hot and fast. The icy barrier surrounding her heart didn't just c***k, it shattered completely. She reached her trembling hand toward the brass door handle, taking a slow, deep breath. She was done hiding. She was done letting fear dictate her life. She was going to walk in, wrap her arms around his broad shoulders, and tell him everything......that the silver pendant belonged to her, that the hotel night was hers, and that the child growing inside her was his. She pushed the door open slightly further, the soft creak sounding through the quiet study. Xavier immediately snapped his head up, his dark, sharp eyes locking onto hers through the opening. The sheer intensity in his gaze made the breath catch in her throat. "Aria?" Xavier said, his voice low and rich. Before she could step across the threshold to speak the words burning in her throat, the high-pitched chime of Xavier’s secure private phone broke the silence. Xavier glanced down at the flashing red screen. His face instantly hardened into a mask of pure, razor-sharp steel. He picked up the phone, sliding it to his ear while keeping his intense gaze locked on Aria. "Speak," Xavier commanded into the receiver. Marcus’s tense, urgent voice echoed clearly through the speaker, loud enough for Aria to catch every word. "Mr. Sterling, we have a situation. Chloe has just leaked an anonymous press release to the major media outlets. She has hired the street thug from the gala night, he claims he has a videotape proving Madam Aria spent that night with him." Xavier’s dark eyes flared with a lethal, terrifying fury, his knuckles turning dead white against the phone.
