Chapter 10: The Golden Lie

1251 Words
The silence inside Xavier’s high-rise office stretched like a pulled wire, taut and ready to snap. Outside, dark storm clouds gathered over the city skyline, casting heavy shadow and light across the dark leather and polished obsidian of his desk. Xavier didn't move. His piercing gaze remained pinned on Chloe, searching every line of her gentle, smiling face. "Your necklace?" Xavier’s voice was dangerously low, a calm before a tempest. Chloe didn't flinch. She had spent years perfecting the art of the fragile, innocent high-society flower....the gentle victim who could do no wrong. She brought a delicate hand to her chest, her soft blue eyes welling with faint, beautiful tears as she looked down at the silver crescent pendant. "Yes," she whispered softly, her voice trembling just enough to sound heartbroken. "I dropped it last night at the Bellevue... during all that chaos in the fourth-floor corridor. Oh, Xavier, I was so frightened. Some terrible man was following me down the hall, and I ran into the first open room I could find." Xavier stood up slowly, his towering frame blotting out the gloomy grey light from the floor-to-ceiling windows behind him. He stepped around the obsidian desk, picking up the velvet box, his eyes never leaving hers. "The room was dark," Xavier murmured, his baritone thick with unspoken tension as he stopped right in front of her. "If you were the woman in that room, Chloe... tell me what happened." Chloe took a small, hesitant step closer, closing the distance between them. She reached out, her soft fingers gently touching the lapel of his tailored suit jacket. She had overheard the rumors about Xavier being targeted with an aphrodisiac at the banquet, she knew exactly what had transpired in that darkness, even if she hadn't been the one there. "It was so dark I couldn't see your face at first," Chloe breathed, tilting her head up, her eyes wide with fabricated, desperate devotion. "You were burning with fever, Xavier... and so was I. You held me like you were afraid I'd disappear. You kissed me... and I let you, because... because I’ve loved you since we were children. I couldn't leave you alone in that pain." A sharp, painful conflict twisted deep in Xavier’s chest. The words matched the timeline. The silver pendant lay right in front of him. But as he looked down at Chloe’s tearful, expectant face, something inside him felt cold, empty, and violently wrong. Where was the wild, intoxicating scent of rain and sweet jasmine that had consumed his senses all night? Chloe wore a heavy, suffocating scent of expensive rose perfume. Where was the raw, trembling vulnerability that had made his protective instincts roar to life in the dark? Why doesn't my heart beat for her right now the way it did last night? "Xavier?" Chloe whispered, her voice laced with subtle panic as she noticed the unyielding stone in his eyes. "You... you believe me, don't you? You promised years ago you'd protect me." Xavier closed the velvet box with a sharp, decisive snap. "Marcus will take you home, Chloe," Xavier said coldly, stepping past her toward the doorway. "We'll discuss this later." "Xavier!" Chloe called out, her fake mask slipping for a split second, revealing a flash of sheer, desperate panic before she quickly smoothed her expression back into soft sorrow. But Xavier was already out the door. By morning, the rain had settled over the Sterling Manor, beating a rhythmic, somber cadence against the floor-to-ceiling dining room glass. Aria sat alone at the long mahogany dining table. She wore a high-collared cream knit sweater that hid the faint red marks on her throat, her pale fingers clutching a silver spoon. A bowl of steaming oat porridge sat before her, but the smell alone sent a sharp, nauseating wave twisting through her stomach. She pressed a hand against her lips, swallowing hard as her vision blurred with exhaustion. She hadn't slept a single wink. Every time she closed her eyes, she felt the burning touch of the shadowed man in the hotel room, the deep rumble of his voice, and the haunting guilt of her secret. Heavy, measured footsteps echoed across the marble foyer. Xavier stepped into the dining room, dressed in a sleek charcoal suit, his expression darker and colder than the storm outside. He carried an air of suffocating authority, his dark eyes instantly locking onto Aria’s pale, delicate form. Aria’s heart hammered frantically against her ribs. She forced herself to sit upright, hiding her trembling hands under the table. "Good morning, Xavier." Xavier didn't reply immediately. He walked over to the head of the table, his tall frame casting a long shadow over her. He stared down at her, at her porcelain skin, her dark, tired eyes, and the quiet, submissive way she held herself. He thought of Chloe’s confession yesterday. He thought of the silver pendant sitting in his office safe. Every logical piece of evidence pointed to Chloe, yet as he looked down at his contract wife, an inexplicable, infuriating frustration boiled in his blood. "You look terrible," Xavier said, his voice flat and devoid of warmth. "Where were you after the gala ended last night?" Aria’s breath caught in her throat. Cold terror shot through her veins. Does he know? Did the thug tell him? "I... I wasn't feeling well," Aria stammered, her voice barely a whisper, her eyes fixed firmly on her untouched bowl of porridge. "I took a car home early. I spent the night in my room." Xavier’s jaw clenched. The lie was seamless, quiet, and delivered without looking him in the eye. A bitter edge of disappointment settled in his chest. Of course it wasn't her, he thought bitterly. She’s just a timid girl forced into this marriage for money. "If you're sick, have the estate doctor examine you," Xavier said coldly, pulling back his chair to sit down. "I won't have the press writing stories about my wife looking like a ghost in my own house." "I'm fine, really....." Aria started to speak, pushing her chair back to stand up and escape his suffocating presence, but as soon as she rose to her feet, the entire room tilted violently on its axis. The chandelier above swung into a blur of spinning light. A sudden, intense wave of heat rushed to her head, completely draining the blood from her face. Her knees turned to soft wax beneath her dress. "Aria?" Xavier’s deep voice cracked through the fog, suddenly stripped of all its cold distance. Aria reached out frantically to grab the edge of the mahogany table, but her fingers slipped off the polished wood. Darkness swept over her vision like a heavy velvet curtain, and her body collapsed limply toward the marble floor. Before she could hit the ground, two massive, powerful arms caught her in mid-air. Xavier pulled her soft, unconscious body flush against his chest, his heart slamming against his ribs with a sudden, wild panic he hadn't felt in years. As he scooped her up into his arms, her head fell back against his shoulder. A soft draft from the open garden door blew past them, lifting a stray strand of her dark hair and wafting a faint, unmistakable scent directly into his face. It was the sweet, intoxicating fragrance of rain and fresh jasmine. Xavier froze in the middle of the room, his breath catching violently in his throat as he stared down at his wife's pale face.
