ALONE TOGETHER: A LAGOS LOVE STORY

Everyone in Lagos envies Vivian Okafor.

Beautiful. Brilliant. Wealthy. As the only heir to Rhodes Creative Agency, she commands every room she walks into. Feared by her employees, admired by the public, and envied by society, Vivian has spent her entire life believing that perfection is the only thing worth chasing. Confidence is her armor, success is her identity, and vulnerability is a weakness she refuses to acknowledge.

To the world, she has it all.

An influential family.

A thriving career.

An engagement to Wisdom Adeyemi, the celebrated CEO of ApexNova Technologies and one of the most eligible bachelors in Nigeria.

Together, they are Lagos' golden couple—the perfect union between two of the country's most powerful families. Every smile they wear is captured by cameras. Every appearance they make becomes tomorrow's headline.

But behind the glamorous photographs and carefully rehearsed smiles lies a truth no one knows.

Vivian and Wisdom are not lovers.

They are strangers carrying the weight of promises made by their parents long before they had the chance to choose their own futures.

While the world celebrates their engagement, both secretly wrestle with lives they never wanted. Wisdom's heart quietly belongs elsewhere, while Vivian has become so consumed by ambition and the desperate need to be admired that she no longer knows who she is beneath the flawless image she's created.

The only constant in Vivian's life is Johnny Eze, her best friend since university. Loyal to a fault, Johnny has spent years standing beside her through every triumph and every mistake. He has watched her push people away, dismiss genuine kindness, and build walls so high that no one has ever been able to reach her. Yet he remains, hoping that one day the girl hidden behind the mask will finally find her way back.

Then fate introduces Vivian to Lilly Nwosu.

Fresh out of a toxic relationship that nearly destroyed her, Lilly has promised herself never to ignore red flags again. Kind, compassionate, and quietly resilient, she has rebuilt her life one careful step at a time. She isn't looking for romance. She isn't searching for someone to save her. All she wants is peace.

Their first meeting ends in disaster.

Their second leaves them even more frustrated.

Forced to work together on a literacy campaign that neither of them can walk away from, Vivian and Lilly quickly discover that they couldn't be more different. Lilly refuses to be intimidated by Vivian's wealth, beauty, or sharp tongue. Vivian, for the first time in her life, encounters someone who doesn't seek her approval and isn't afraid to challenge her.

What begins as resentment slowly turns into curiosity.

Curiosity becomes understanding.

Understanding becomes a connection neither of them is prepared for.

But love has never been simple.

Not when families have already decided your future.

Not when reputations are worth millions.

Not when society has already written your story for you.

As hidden feelings surface, painful secrets come to light, and impossible choices demand impossible sacrifices, each of them must decide whether to continue living the lives others have chosen... or risk losing everything to finally become who they truly are.

Can a woman who has spent her entire life craving admiration learn what it means to genuinely love someone?

Can a heart that has survived betrayal trust again?

Can two lonely souls find each other in a city where appearances matter more than truth?

Or will the expectations of everyone around them prove stronger than the courage to choose themselves?

In a city that never sleeps, where power, wealth, and reputation can shape destinies, four lives will collide in ways none of them ever imagined.

Because sometimes the loneliest people aren't the ones who are alone...

They're the ones standing together.

ALONE TOGETHER
CHAPTER ONE The Woman in the Mirror "The most dangerous people aren't those who hate love. They're the ones who mistake admiration for it." Lagos never truly slept. By seven-thirty on a Monday morning, Victoria Island was already alive with impatient horns, hurried footsteps, and the endless rhythm of ambition. Luxury SUVs crawled through traffic while suited executives hurried into towering glass buildings, chasing meetings, deadlines, and dreams. Among them stood Rhodes Creative Agency—one of the most prestigious advertising firms in Nigeria. Inside, employees moved with unusual urgency. "She's here." The whisper spread across the reception like wildfire. A young intern immediately straightened the stack of magazines on the reception table. The receptionist adjusted her blazer and stood to attention. Designers abandoned their conversations and returned to their computers before the elevator doors even opened. Then she walked in. Vivian Okafor. Twenty-six years old. Creative Director. Only child of Chief Chinedu Okafor, founder of Rhodes Creative. She wore a crisp white pantsuit tailored to perfection, black heels that clicked confidently against the marble floor, and oversized sunglasses that hid eyes few people had ever truly seen. Heads turned. They always did. Some admired her. Others feared her. Most did both. "Good morning, Ms. Okafor," the receptionist greeted politely. Vivian didn't respond. Acknowledging everyone only made them feel important. She walked past without breaking stride. Inside the elevator, silence settled around her. She removed her sunglasses and looked at her reflection in the mirrored walls. Perfect. Not a strand of hair out of place. Not a wrinkle on her suit. Not a single flaw. Her mother had once said, "If people can't criticize your appearance, they'll never know where to begin." Vivian had never forgotten those words. The elevator chimed. The doors slid open. "Vivian!" Johnny Eze jogged toward her, slightly out of breath, balancing two takeaway cups of coffee. "I was beginning to think you'd outrun me." She accepted one cup without looking at him. "You remembered." Johnny grinned. "I always do." "You should." He laughed. "You know, one day you'll actually say thank you." "I doubt it." Johnny only smiled. After eight years of friendship, he'd learned not to take her sharp words personally. Everyone in the office wondered how he managed to remain Vivian's closest friend. The truth was simple. Johnny never expected anything from her. He accepted the cancelled dinners. The forgotten birthdays. The unanswered messages. The way she disappeared whenever life became inconvenient. He stayed. Some called it loyalty. Others called it foolishness. Vivian called it... convenient. "You've got the Henderson investor meeting at ten," Johnny reminded her as they walked toward the conference room. "And?" "You still haven't reviewed the proposal." "I don't need to." "You haven't even opened the file." She shrugged. "I don't need to read something to know whether it's good." Johnny sighed. There it was. The confidence. Or was it arrogance? Sometimes Vivian really was the smartest person in the room. Other times... She simply believed she was. He wasn't always sure which version of her would show up. The conference room fell silent the moment Vivian entered. Every executive stood. Every assistant lowered their gaze. Exactly as expected. Vivian placed her coffee on the table before taking her seat at the head. "Let's begin." The presentation moved smoothly. Slide after slide. Forecasts. Budgets. Campaign strategies. No interruptions. Until— A timid voice spoke from the far end of the room. "Excuse me, Ms. Okafor..." Everyone turned. It was Ada, a junior designer who had only joined the company two months earlier. "I... I think there's a mistake on slide twelve." Vivian looked up slowly. Her expression never changed. "Did I ask for your opinion?" Ada froze. "I was only trying to help." "No." Vivian closed the laptop in front of her with a quiet click. "You were trying to make yourself look useful." The room became painfully quiet. Ada swallowed hard. "I... I'm sorry." "Save your apology." Vivian reopened the presentation. "If I need corrections, I'll ask for them." No one defended Ada. Not because they agreed. Because they were afraid. The meeting continued as though nothing had happened. Outside the conference room, Ada wiped away a tear before gathering her notebook. Johnny watched her leave. His chest tightened. He wanted to tell her not to take it personally. He wanted to explain that Vivian hadn't always been like this. But he said nothing. Instead... He picked up Vivian's forgotten coffee and followed her. Just as he always did. Across Lagos, in the quiet streets of Yaba, life moved at a gentler pace. Inside a small independent bookstore, sunlight streamed through tall windows, bathing rows of books in a warm golden glow. Lilly Nwosu stood on the tips of her toes, stretching to reach a novel on the highest shelf. "Come on..." she muttered. "I'm not losing a battle to a bookshelf." A soft chuckle came from behind her. An elderly woman smiled warmly. "Need a little help?" Lilly laughed. "I was hoping no one noticed." Together, they reached the book. "There we are," the woman said. "Thank you." "You always brighten this place," the woman replied. Before Lilly could answer, a little boy accidentally dropped a pile of children's books near the reading corner. Without hesitation, Lilly hurried over. "Looks like these books wanted to escape." The little boy giggled. Together they stacked every book back onto the shelf. His mother smiled gratefully. "Thank you." "It's nothing." "No," the woman said softly. "It's kindness." Lilly smiled. "The world already gives us enough reasons not to be kind." The woman stared at her for a moment. "Someone taught you that?" Lilly's smile faded almost imperceptibly. "No." She looked out the window. "Life did." Miles away, Vivian stood alone in her corner office overlooking the Lagos skyline. From the thirty-second floor, the city looked almost peaceful. Her reflection stared back from the glass. Confident. Elegant. Untouchable. Yet... For reasons she couldn't explain... She suddenly looked away. Neither woman knew the other existed. One had spent her life believing love was something to be earned through perfection. The other had spent hers learning that love should never have to hurt. Fate had already begun weaving their paths together. Soon... One would become the greatest challenge the other had ever faced. And neither of them would walk away unchanged.
