“How was your time at the company?” Lynn started a conversation in the car—something no one would ever expect from him. It was unusual for a man who preferred silence, a man who kept everything under control by saying as little as possible.
“U-Umm… it was nice,” I answered carefully. “Except for the attack at the Halloween party.”
“When are you returning to school?”
“Monday.”
“Okay.”
And just like that, the conversation ended. Not that I expected him to continue it anyway.
When we arrived home, he waited until I entered the house before driving away, just like he always did.
“Hmmm.”
I jumped at the sound. Ariel stood in the hallway, arms crossed and eyes full of mischief.
“Did your man just drop you off?”
“He’s not my man.”
“Oooh,” she dragged the word dramatically before bursting into laughter and heading toward her room.
“I’m still single!” I shouted after her.
“Well, Lynn is not!” she laughed again before closing the door.
I rolled my eyes in annoyance, but honestly, I already had too much on my mind to argue with her.
Since I had gotten used to staying at home, waking up for school the next morning felt like torture. Ariel practically dragged me out of bed the entire morning, rushing me to get ready.
“Ayl! Oh, Ayl!”
Lucas came running toward us the moment we reached the gate. He threw himself at me in a hug so hard that we nearly fell over.
“Why are you so late?”
“It’s not like someone here was excited to go back to school,” Ariel teased.
“Come on, sis,” Lucas said. “Who actually likes school?”
We headed to class together. As expected, the day was painfully boring. Mondays were never enjoyable. Still, by the end of the day, I felt relieved. My internship report had turned out well, and my supervisor had left me good remarks.
After classes, Ariel went for music training, so Lucas and I headed to the school garden. We had a lot to catch up on since the fair.
“What?” Lucas suddenly grabbed my shoulders after I told him about the Halloween attack. “You weren’t hurt anywhere?”
He spun me around dramatically, checking me for injuries.
“No, I’m fine,” I laughed softly. “I was just shocked.”
He let out a relieved breath and touched his chest.
Apart from my family, Lucas cared about me more than almost anyone else.
…Well, maybe Lynn counted too.
Or maybe not.
Who knows?
“So your brother and your second boss fought the possessed vampire?”
“It was too strong for them,” I admitted. “They couldn’t handle him alone.”
“Then who did?”
“Our big boss… Lynn Blackwood.”
“Wait—your big boss is Lynn Blackwood?”
“Mhm.” I nodded.
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” he nearly yelled. “I’ve been dying to see that dominating mafia king!”
“You’ve never seen him before?”
“Nope.”
“How? He had a birthday banquet like five months ago. All the elites were invited.”
I frowned in confusion. I was certain his family had received an invitation.
“Well, my family was invited,” he admitted, “but I couldn’t go because I wasn’t feeling well that day.”
“Why?” I asked, surprised he had never mentioned it before.
“It was my feeding-off day, so attending the banquet would’ve been inconvenient.”
“Oh…” I murmured softly. “Sorry. I didn’t know.”
“But I could’ve met him if you had told me back then,” he complained with a disappointed look.
“How? His office isn’t in our company. He mostly stays at headquarters.”
“Ooh… then that’s pointless.”
The disappointment on his face almost made me feel guilty. I probably could help him meet Lynn somehow… but saying that out loud would only create chaos. Ariel alone was already too much to handle.
The sun had disappeared completely now, leaving streaks of orange across the evening sky.
“Let’s go get Ariel,” I said, standing from the bench. “We should head home.”
“No need,” Lucas said, pointing ahead. “She’s already coming.”
“Ayl! Ayl!” Ariel came sprinting toward us, her voice trembling with excitement. “Lynn is here!”
I blinked at her in disbelief.
“I’m serious,” she said once she reached us, breathless. “Lynn Blackwood is here.”
“Really?!” Lucas looked even more excited than Ariel. The thing he’d wanted just minutes ago was suddenly about to happen.
“Lynn? At my school?” I frowned. “What does he want?”
“I don’t know,” Ariel replied quickly. “I didn’t ask him. He looks like he’s waiting for someone.”
“Where is he?”
“At the school gate. Wanna go see?”
She immediately grabbed my hand and started pulling me.
“No,” I refused instantly. “Let’s just leave.”
“Come on, Ayl,” Lucas begged. “I wanted to see him, remember?”
“And maybe,” Ariel added with a smirk, “he’s here for you.”
Lucas looked completely confused now.
“Why would he come for her?”
“It’s a long story, Lucas,” Ariel said casually. “Now help me drag her to the gate.”
“Guys, wait!” I protested, struggling against them.
But it was useless.
Lucas had already started pushing me from behind, and together, the two of them dragged me toward the gate while I helplessly tried to resist.
