The weekend had barely begun, but Ji-eun couldn’t relax. Her mind replayed every moment from the week — the board meetings, client dinners, the rooftop terrace, the subtle brush of Hyun-woo’s hand against hers. Pretending to be his girlfriend had started to feel dangerously real.
Her phone buzzed. A message from Hyun-woo:
“Meet me at the company gym. 6 p.m. sharp.”
Ji-eun blinked. Gym? She wasn’t prepared for this. Hyun-woo was nothing if not unpredictable. Still, she found herself dressing quickly, pulling on workout clothes and sneakers, heart racing with anticipation.
At the Gym
The gym was empty, the faint hum of treadmills filling the silence. Hyun-woo was already there, adjusting weights with the precision she had come to expect. His presence made the air feel tighter, heavier, charged with something she couldn’t name.
“Ji-eun,” he greeted, eyes scanning her from head to toe. “You’re late.”
“I’m… on time?” she replied, breathless, though she was technically a few minutes early.
“You’re always worried about being perfect,” he said, smirking faintly. “Relax. Focus on yourself for a change.”
She frowned. “I am focused. On… what matters.”
His gaze lingered on her, sharp yet soft at the same time. “Careful what matters,” he said. “Sometimes it’s not what we think it is.”
Training Together
Hyun-woo demonstrated stretches and exercises, his movements smooth and controlled. Ji-eun tried to follow, stumbling slightly over a balance move. He stepped closer instantly, steadying her with a firm yet gentle hand.
“Careful,” he murmured.
“I… I’m fine,” she said, her voice shaky. But she wasn’t. Not with him this close, his warmth radiating through every contact.
He didn’t pull away immediately. Instead, he held her for a moment longer than necessary. Ji-eun’s heart raced. She tried to focus on the movements, on the routine, but her mind refused to cooperate.
Unplanned Confessions
As they finished the exercises, they sat on the mats catching their breath. The silence was comfortable, yet heavy with unspoken words.
“You’ve changed since we started this,” Hyun-woo said softly, breaking the quiet.
Ji-eun looked at him, puzzled. “Changed?”
“Yes,” he said, gaze unwavering. “You’re more confident. Calm under pressure. And…” he hesitated, “…you’re more aware of your surroundings. You notice things most people wouldn’t.”
She swallowed, feeling a strange warmth in her chest. Compliments from him were rare, deliberate, and meaningful.
“I… I’m just trying to keep up,” she admitted, looking down.
He leaned slightly closer, voice low. “Keep up? You’re exceeding expectations — mine included.”
A Moment Too Close
As they stood to leave, Hyun-woo extended a towel toward her. Their fingers brushed, lingering just slightly longer than necessary. Ji-eun felt a jolt run through her.
“Careful,” he said, almost teasing, almost serious.
“I will,” she replied softly, though her pulse betrayed her.
For a fleeting moment, they were close enough to feel each other’s warmth, the faint scent of his cologne lingering in the air. Pretending was getting harder, and every small gesture reminded her how tangled their emotions were becoming.
Evening Reflection
Walking home, Ji-eun’s thoughts raced. The week had pushed her limits — professionally, emotionally, and personally. But the most dangerous part wasn’t the work. It was Hyun-woo. The way he made her heart skip, the way he could command a room, and yet somehow command her attention and emotions without even trying.
She sat on her bed, staring at the ceiling, whispering to herself:
How did pretending turn into… this?
The line between lie and reality was blurring, and Ji-eun knew she was dangerously close to crossing it — even if she didn’t yet want to admit it.
