Chapter 1:Pretend, but Too Real
Ji-eun stood in front of the mirror, twisting the strap of her silk dress nervously. The fabric was smooth, expensive, and completely alien to her. She had never worn anything like this before. Normally, she preferred jeans and sneakers. Tonight, her mother had insisted, “You have to look perfect. You need to make an impression.”
“I’m not trying to impress anyone,” Ji-eun muttered under her breath, smoothing the folds of the dress. Her reflection stared back at her: poised, graceful, composed. A lie, just like the one she was about to live.
A knock at the door made her jump.
“Ready?” The deep voice outside belonged to Hyun-woo. Calm, confident, infuriatingly controlled.
Ji-eun exhaled, trying to steady her racing heart. “Yeah… almost.” She adjusted her hair one last time.
The door opened, and there he was. Hyun-woo, CEO of Daejin Corporation, looked every bit the part of a man untouchable, untamed, and yet somehow magnetic. Tailored suit, sharp jawline, and eyes that seemed to see right through her.
“Ji-eun,” he said with a curt nod. “We’re late.”
“I know,” she whispered, forcing herself to meet his gaze.
This wasn’t real. None of it. She was pretending to be his girlfriend for tonight’s gala. A fake relationship to protect her family’s reputation after a minor scandal threatened to reach the media. Just one night, she told herself. One night, and it would be over.
The ride to the gala was painfully silent. Ji-eun stared out the window at the city lights, her mind spinning. Every reflection of neon on the car’s glossy surfaces reminded her of how surreal this was.
Hyun-woo’s hand rested lightly on the steering wheel — or maybe that was his passenger seat — she couldn’t tell. He didn’t speak, and she found herself wondering: Was he always this intimidatingly calm, or was he aware of the effect he had on her?
By the time they arrived, the red carpet was already flooded with cameras and flashing lights. Reporters whispered as they passed. She could hear snippets: “CEO and his girlfriend?” “Are they really dating?” Each word was a knife, slicing into her composure.
“Just follow my lead,” Hyun-woo murmured beside her. The proximity made her shiver — part nerves, part something else she couldn’t name.
Ji-eun nodded, forcing a smile. She had to play the part, every word, every laugh rehearsed. But even in the crowd, she noticed details she shouldn’t have. The way Hyun-woo’s fingers brushed hers just slightly too long when they posed. The faint upward tilt of his lips when no one was looking. Little things that shouldn’t matter, but did.
“Breathe,” she told herself. “It’s just acting.”
And yet, as the cameras clicked and flashes burst around them, her heart betrayed her.
Backstory & Inner Thoughts
Earlier that day, Ji-eun had been juggling endless phone calls. Her family’s business was under scrutiny after a minor accounting error went public. A scandal, small but enough to ruin reputations if the press got wind of it.
Her mother had called incessantly. “You need to fix this, Ji-eun. Everything depends on it!”
She had thought about running away, but Hyun-woo’s intervention changed everything. Offering to accompany her as a ‘boyfriend’ for tonight’s gala — it was humiliating, absurd, and yet… strangely comforting.
Comforting in a way that made her chest tighten whenever he was near.
The Gala
They walked in, hand in hand. Every head turned, every camera flash ignited. People assumed they were a couple, just as planned. The lie felt easier when the world bought into it.
“Smile,” Hyun-woo said softly.
Ji-eun did, but it was shaky. Her mind raced with the tension between reality and pretense. Each smile forced, each laugh measured, she wondered: would he notice? Would anyone notice that behind the act, her heart had started betraying her?
They posed for photos. Every click of the camera was like a drumbeat in her chest.
Later, in the private lounge, the drinks and chatter flowed. She kept her distance, but Hyun-woo remained close. Too close.
“You’re not bad at this,” he said suddenly, his voice low. “For a fake girlfriend.”
Ji-eun’s cheeks flushed. “I’m… learning,” she replied.
He smirked, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Careful. I can tell when someone is nervous.”
“I’m not nervous,” she said quickly. And she meant it… sort of.
Private Moments & Tension
After the gala, in the car on the way home, silence fell again. But this time, Ji-eun felt it differently. She wasn’t just acting anymore. Every glance, every accidental touch, seemed heavier, charged with unspoken tension.
She remembered every word from the night — every smile, every laugh, every fleeting look — and realized something terrifying. Pretending might have been easy at first, but the line between lie and reality was starting to blur.
Acting like Hyun-woo’s girlfriend wasn’t just an act anymore. And for the first time, Ji-eun couldn’t tell if that terrified her… or excited her.
