Chapter 5 — Unspoken Truths

722 Words
The evening air was cooler than Ji-eun expected as she stepped out of the taxi. Her apartment building loomed before her, lights flickering softly through the glass windows. Despite the city’s hum below, her mind was still echoing with Hyun-woo’s words from the terrace earlier. “Everything about us is complicated.” She bit her lip, trying to shove the thought aside. But the more she tried to ignore it, the more it lingered. Pretending to be his girlfriend had started to feel less like an act and more like a dangerous game — one she wasn’t sure she wanted to win or lose. Late-Night Call Her phone buzzed. A message from Hyun-woo: “Are you awake? I need to discuss tomorrow’s schedule.” Ji-eun hesitated. It was late. Really late. But something inside her told her to reply. “I’m awake. Send the details.” Moments later, a call came through. She answered, and his voice filled the room — calm, commanding, but unexpectedly gentle. “We’ll start with the meeting at the new branch,” he said. “Then you’ll accompany me to the client dinner. Be ready at 8 a.m. sharp.” “I… okay,” she whispered. “I’ll be ready.” There was a pause. “Ji-eun…” His voice softened slightly. “You don’t need to overthink. I’ll guide you. Trust me.” Her heart skipped a beat. The casual reassurance shouldn’t have mattered. And yet, it did. Morning Tension The next day, Ji-eun arrived at Daejin Tower earlier than usual. She straightened her blazer in the reflection of the glass doors, her stomach twisting. Today was different. Today, she wasn’t just pretending in front of reporters — she was acting alongside Hyun-woo for business matters, with clients who had no idea about their arrangement. He was already there, hands casually folded behind him. “You’re early,” he remarked, though his gaze carried a hint of something else — approval, perhaps. “I… I like being prepared,” she said nervously. Hyun-woo smirked faintly. “Good. You’ll need it.” Client Meeting The car ride to the client’s office was tense. Ji-eun glanced at Hyun-woo occasionally, noting how effortlessly he navigated the conversation on the phone. There was confidence in every gesture, precision in every word — the kind of presence that demanded respect. At the client’s office, she tried to blend in, following Hyun-woo’s lead. But her nerves betrayed her, making her stumble slightly over a phrase. “You okay?” Hyun-woo’s voice was soft, barely audible, but it made her pulse race. “Yes,” she murmured, hoping he wouldn’t notice. “You need to relax,” he said, leaning slightly closer under the pretense of adjusting his tie. “People notice tension. And right now, we can’t afford to show any weakness.” Ji-eun swallowed. He’s right… I have to act calm. But how can I when he’s this close? A Private Conversation Later, after the client meeting, Hyun-woo drove them back. The car was silent except for the soft hum of the engine. Ji-eun’s thoughts spiraled. She wondered if anyone else in his life noticed the intensity he carried, the way he seemed untouchable yet capable of small gestures that unnerved her completely. “You’re thinking too much,” he said suddenly, breaking her thoughts. She looked up at him, startled. “I… I can’t help it.” “Of course you can,” he replied, his voice soft but firm. “Focus on what matters. Not the distractions.” She frowned. “And what matters?” “Right now?” He glanced at her briefly. “The work. The board. This arrangement. Not us.” Her cheeks warmed. Not us? But every part of her wanted it to be them. Evening Reflection That night, Ji-eun sat by her window, staring at the city lights. She thought about the day — the small brush of his hand, the way he spoke, the tension that lingered even when he was silent. She knew one thing clearly: pretending was no longer simple. The lie she had promised herself she could control was slipping. And with every interaction, every unspoken glance, every accidental touch, Ji-eun realized she was inching closer to something real — something that terrified her more than any scandal ever could.
