Chapter One: The Funeral Gift
Chapter One: The Funeral Gift The church bell echoed across the quiet town of Ravenshollow. Its deep, mournful sound rolled through the mist-covered streets, reminding everyone that another life had come to an end. Black umbrellas filled the churchyard as rain fell steadily from the gray sky. Men and women dressed in dark clothes stood in silence while the choir sang a gentle farewell hymn. Among them stood seventeen-year-old Ethan Cole. His eyes never left the polished oak coffin at the front of the church. Inside rested the only person who had ever truly cared for him—his grandmother, Grace Cole. She had raised him since he was six years old, after his parents died in what everyone called a tragic car accident. She never remarried, never complained, and never allowed Ethan to feel alone. Now she was gone. As the pastor spoke about her kindness and generosity, Ethan remembered the countless evenings they had spent on the front porch, watching the sunset. She always smiled whenever he asked about his parents, but she never answered his questions. "There are some truths," she would often say, "that reveal themselves only when the time is right." He had never understood what she meant. Until now. After the service, the mourners slowly followed the hearse to the cemetery on the edge of town. Rain soaked the fresh earth as Grace Cole's coffin was lowered into the ground. Ethan remained standing long after everyone else had begun leaving. "I'm sorry for your loss." The voice came from behind him. He turned and saw an elderly gentleman wearing a dark gray coat and holding a polished wooden cane. His silver hair was neatly combed, and despite the rain, his shoes were spotless. "You must be Ethan Cole." "Yes." The man nodded respectfully. "My name is Arthur Alden. I served as your grandmother's lawyer for more than forty years." Ethan frowned. "My grandmother never mentioned having a lawyer." Mr. Alden gave a small smile. "Your grandmother kept many things hidden. She believed the less you knew, the safer you would be." Those words immediately caught Ethan's attention. The old lawyer reached into a leather briefcase and carefully removed a small wooden box. It was no larger than a paperback book, carved from dark oak with an unusual symbol etched into the lid—a large tree enclosed within a perfect circle. Mr. Alden held it out. "She instructed me to give this to you only after she had been buried." Ethan accepted it. The box was surprisingly heavy. "What is it?" "I promised your grandmother I would never open it." Mr. Alden paused before adding quietly, "She also made me promise to tell you something." Ethan looked at him. "'Whatever happens,'" the lawyer said slowly, "'never surrender the key.'" "The key?" Mr. Alden simply tipped his hat. "I have already said more than I should." Before Ethan could ask another question, the old man walked away through the rain and disappeared between the rows of ancient gravestones. Ethan stared after him. Never surrender the key? He looked down at the mysterious box in his hands. A cold breeze swept through the cemetery. For just a second, he had the strange feeling that someone else was watching him. He turned sharply. Near the cemetery gate stood a tall figure dressed entirely in black. The stranger wore a wide-brimmed hat that hid his face. The moment Ethan looked directly at him... the man turned and vanished into the thick fog. A shiver ran down Ethan's spine. Who was he? And why did it feel as though his grandmother's funeral was only the beginning?
