Daughter

Amani was resting in a cave when she heard the sounds of whimpering, yelping and children voices laughing , screeching and being vicious. "Get it! Don't let it go!" "Block it from that side" "hit it with your stick if it gets close" she silently made her way to the mouth of the cave peering out into the brightness of the day she could see a bunch of young children beating on a young wolf. Amani growled she ran and jumped over the children her big frame pushing them out of the way as she stood over top of the light gray almost white ball of fur curled up whimpering as its fragile frame shook like an autumn leaf on a gently breeze. Protecting the young pup with her body she growled and snarled baring her teeth at the children , she even bit down on the stick in one of the children's hands that snapped loudly scaring the child into dropping the stick with a loud yelp. The children ran away screaming , crying or both. Amani gently rubbed her nuzzle against the pup who jumped in fright scrambling up from under her body before it faced her lowering it's head at her as though submitting to her. Amani had a brief glance of clouded silver eyes and knew the pup was blind that was how the humans had been able to corner and beat on it , it's defenses were nonexistent. Not wanting to chance the children coming back with the parents in tow she shifted into her human form picked up the pup who in it's startled state nipped at her. Ignoring the sting she rushed back into her cave going as far back into it as she could get. She took a rag and wet it with some water from her water skin bag, she made a gentle cooing sound before touching the rag to the wolf pups fur where she saw a tint of pink coloring the fur "good pupper, I'm not going to hurt you , checheche it's okay " the pup nipped at her as she whimpered in pain. Amani placed her forehead against the pups and willed her calmness into the pup letting it know she was a safe person for it. As her hands rubbed up and down the pups body it relatively stuck it's tongue out and licked her face making her chuckle "atta pupper I'm a friend good to see we have an understanding now " she looked over the pup making sure there were no other injuries before she shifted back into her wolf form she had an idea she wanted to try after all. Amani noticed the pups ears perk at her shift and her tail started to wag a little as she crawled towards her with her belly touching the ground . "Can you understand me pupper?" She thought towards the little pup in response the pup yipped happily nudging it's nuzzle into one of her legs before it rolled onto it's back "mama?" It asked her in her mind she looked down dumbfounded " sorry pupper, I'm not your mom I'm not even an adult yet " the next words confused her even more "Alpha?" Amani knew what an alpha was more or less from the knowledge she had on wolves if she thought logically she was to be the leader of her parents village once she turned 21 so in some ways it would be as though she was the alpha to her villagers as the head of the village and Shaman of her tribe . Amani hesitated a minute before agreeing "well I guess I could be viewed that way sure, do you have a name ? Mine is Amani" the pup whom she could tell was female was showing her belly to Amani after hearing her question she turned over placing her paws over her eyes "bad girl, no vision, useless wolf get rid of " she whimpered . Feeling her heart clench Amani snuggled the young wolf "never say those things about yourself I will teach you how to be a good strong wolf I will give you a name and you will be my child going forward okay " in response the wolf pup excitedly started to kiss, nip, too and jump all over her while calling her "mama" while she laughed playing along with her trying to figure out what she should name her new adopted daughter. Amani decided she would name her new daughter Pearl , she discovered Pearl was three years old when it became apparent her blindness hadn't faded as a pup she was deemed as being a bad omen , she was seen as a liability to her pack . All wolves were born blind as pups but they eventually got eye sight; her eyes however had only gotten clouded and she became shunned for it. Amani explained her own situation to Pearl that she was a shifter now and so sometimes she would be in human form so she would need her to focus on her smell and sound learning to go forth without sight meant depending on other factors to make it through everyday situations. Amani took time to consult with her teacher in the spirit world on how to help Pearl. She was surprised when her teacher told her to not worry about Pearl and that she would teach her personally. And so the two continued to travel together under the shadows of the night towards the coldness of the North where Amani had been told she would find her strongest Allies against Otaktay . Unaware her friends were little more than two days behind here Amani continued her journey North carrying her daughter on her back at night to make sure they kept up their pace to avoid reducing the distance between Amani's pursuers and them. She dared not think what would happen if Otaktay's people got their hands on Pearl, so she taught her everyday about the smells and sounds around them today she was teaching her about fish " this is a fresh fish dead only a few seconds smell it, and then lick it but don't bite it yet" she instructed Pearl did as instructed Amani held back a giggle as Pearls stomach growled loudly "okay you can eat it" she said as Pearl wagged her tail she went to pick up another fish "now this is the same type of fish but it has been dead and cooked smell it tell me if you notice anything different then lick it and tell me the difference as well" Pearl nodded sniffing the fish she tilted her head until her ear folded "no water smell , smells smoky it tickles my nose, no blood smell at all no egg smell" "that is good now lick the outside " she licked the fish and grunted "no coldness, slippery or slime feeling tastes like fish but different somehow I can't explain it the freshness of the water is not as strong even though the smell is still fish , I taste the smoke from the fire too " her belly growled again this time Amani didn't hold back her laughter "eat the fish now be careful it is hot still" Pearl gently bit into the fish "ouch the water burns , but it has a nice taste " she said before she went back to eating the fish "it is good but I feel I get better nutrients from cold fish, I like cold fish better this feels unnatural for me" Amani raised her brow at that comment then had Pearl follow her a distance "this next one you cannot eat but I want you to smell it okay , this is the same fish but it has been dead and out of water for a long time" Pearl wrinkled her nose "ew gross" but she reluctantly sniffed the air and ground around her until she found the dead fish " oh gross it smell's bad, rotten old blood and death" Amani rubbed her face against her daughters I need you to remember that smell and avoid it at all costs if you smell it in the air run and hide as far from it as you can ok , only bad things smell like that" she had been taught to avoid such smells because she was told that was what vampires and rogues smelled like. With the lesson done for the day they found a place to hide from the world so they could get a few hours of sleep before they continued their journey they would be stopping in with a magic master about two hours away once Amani felt she was rested enough since the previous night had been long and hard because they had been chased by humans who thought they had killed their chickens and had started to throw rocks at them Amani had run with all her might fearing there might be other wolves around she had wanted to teach Pearl how to smell death. As they curled together under a tree in what appeared to be an abandoned den Pearl asked her "if anything happens to you and I get lost what should I do?" Amani froze for a minute "look for the Greyson wolves or a wolf named Zonta and tell them about us , tell them you are my daughter they will help you and keep you safe, but first hide, use your skills and if I do not find you in 2 days time leave. You have gotten better at figuring out time now you can also always ask teacher for help too now no more talking I need to sleep" she wrapped her tail around her snuggling into Amani and Neither spoke another word.
