Nineteen Years Ago
Her baby wouldn't stop crying. She started to cry at the last station, when the train out of Seattle stopped in Hood River, Oregon to pick up more passengers. Now, at a little after 3 A.M., they were almost to the Helena, Montana Station and for the 3-plus hours of trying to comfort her baby girl were, as her friends and family back home would say, getting on her last nerve.
The man in front of her turns around not happy whatsoever and glares at her.
" I'm really sorry about this," she said turning her head as to not look directly into his icy stare. " She's usually not this cranky. It's our first trip together. I guess she's just ready for this ride to be over."
The man smiled sinister smile, without showing his teeth. " Where are you two heading?"
" Kentucky."
" Ah. The type that run to start fresh by running from their problems, with no place to really go. Am I right?"
She gasped not sure how to respond, or grasp how he pinpointed on everything. " I'm going there for a job offer." She lied. Trying to move the conversation to something else.
The man was staring at her now. It was dark on the train, but she thought there was something weird about his eyes. Again the sinister smile. " With a body Iike yours, who wouldn't give you the position."
Blushing at his comment, she looked down at her crying baby. Her boyfriend back in Seattle would say things similar to that. He used to say alot of things to get her in his bed. " And he's not our boyfriend anymore." Said the voice in her head. Not since her senior year of high-school when she started swelling up with his kid. She did make sure to finish with her diploma this summer.
" Have you eaten anything today?" the man asked, as the train slowed down and began to pull into the Helena station.
" Not really." She gently bounced her baby girl in her arms, for all the good it did. She was red in the face, her tiny fists pumping, still crying like there was no tomorrow.
" What a coincidence," the man said. " I haven't either. Do you want to join me?"
" No. Thank you for the offer though, this is the last train to Kentucky tonight, so I better stay on. Thanks, though."
He didn't say anything else just watched as she gathered the few things she had once the train had stopped, so that she could change her baby at the stations facilities.
When she came out of the bathroom, the man was waiting for her. A tingle of fear shot through her. He didn't look so big when he was sitting in front of her. And now that she was looking at him again, she could definitely tell his eyes weren't of this reality, they were only something you read about.
" Whats going on? Why are you out here waiting?"
He laughed underneath his breath. " I told you earlier, I need to feed."
" That was a very strange way to make that statement." Said the voice again.
She couldn't help but notice there was hardly anyone around in the station this late. Her train was reloading passengers getting ready to leave the bay. In order to get to it she had to get past him.
She shrugged to tired to deal with this s**t. " So if your hungry go tell McDonald's. I'm late for my train—"
" Listen, b***h—" He moved faster than her eyes could track, she didn't know what hit her. One second he was three feet away from her, then in a blink he had her throat in his hand, cutting off her airway. He pushed her into the shadows of the tree line covered by the thick forest canopy that enveloped them in darkness. Not a single person would see them.
" Your not going to say a word, and your not going to move a muscle or I will eat that brats heart."
She didn't even want to think about moving. All that mattered was getting that baby to safety, so she didn't dare do a thing not even when those sharp fangs ripped into her throat.
She stood utterly frozen in fear, holding her baby close while her attacker drank from her neck. His fingernails grew into dagger like claws, that pierced into her flesh as he pulled her closer roughly.
Although her eyes were wide open her vision was going dark. When a elegant woman appeared to her.
" My child, you must hold on a little while longer. The child born unto you is of great importance to our world. She holds great power and is of both worlds. Go deeper into the forest, I have chosen someone to care for her now, you have done good while you could. She will be loved."
