CHAPTER IXThe Central Ziggurat JOHN LUX became aware of a faint tingling sensation in the nerves of his body. The irritant was negligible, but it was there. He could not at once put a name to the phenomenon, but he knew that some kind of energy was being directed against him. Puzzled, he took another look at the panel of instruments. None of them was registering anything, except for the device he had tentatively designated as resembling a Geiger counter. On that dial, the indicator bar was creeping through the yellow danger zone into the red zone, that of killing intensity. He was being bombarded with gamma radiation! He frowned slightly. Again he employed his curious propensity to visualize energy flows. Heat waves he had seen as spreading concentric circles of dull, luminous crimson.
