JOHN LUX extended his sensories, studying the force field which sustained his body in the empty shaft. By means of his remarkable new abilities he was able to perceive and to scrutinize the energy flow that pulsed through the length of the hollow transparent cylinder.
It was a counter-gravitic force new to him and essentially unlike the mode of travel he had used to fly to the central ziggurat hours before. At the time he had materialized in mid-air beyond the glassy hull of Havering’s aircar, he had simply seized the power source of Earth’s gravitational field, utilizing that energy flow to hold himself aloft.
