CHAPTER XIIIThe Weapon Machine JOHN LUX struggled to retain a calm, impassive demeanor before the two Arcadians who had tricked and bedeviled him with lies and illusions for so long. For a moment he remained silent, studying them curiously. Their appearance here at this time could have only one implication: time was running out, and the Crisis Point was almost upon them. In mere moments, he might be called upon to make a decision of incalculable importance. A decision that would affect the future history of human civilization. A decision, moreover, that he alone could make. For a moment he yielded to an all-too-human weakness, wishing that a decision of such enormity could have been passed into other, more capable hands. Then this moment of vacillation passed; he felt new determination
