When billionaire CEO Julian Vance’s corporate machine threatens to destroy Maya Lin’s eco-startup, she doesn't hide—she ambushes him in his own lobby. Impressed by her fierce independence, Julian offers a partnership, but a sudden arson attack and a ruthless board coup throw them into a deadly trap. Framed for crime and stripped of power, the two forced enemies must unite in an off-grid war to save her legacy. But when a legal loop-hole threatens their venture, their only weapon left is a contract marriage—and a fake alliance that quickly threatens to become real.

Chapter 1
"If you press that security alarm, Thomas, I will make sure the morning news footage shows Vance Security putting hands on the founder of a non-profit eco-initiative." Maya Lin didn't flinch as the sharp edge of the black granite security counter dug into her ribs. She didn't look at the burly guard currently reaching for his belt, nor did she look down at the polished white marble floor where her mud-crusted work boots were leaving dark grey tracks across the pristine foyer. She kept her eyes locked directly on Julian Vance. It was 8:58 AM in the soaring grand lobby of Vance Tower, and she had just thrown herself directly into the path of the billionaire CEO and his six-man executive entourage. Julian stopped dead in his tracks. The men around him froze, their hushed, multi-million-dollar conversation dying instantly. Julian’s charcoal suit was immaculate, but his sharp grey eyes were cold, shadowed, and exhausted as they swept down her frayed coat, past the grease smudge on her jawline, and settled on her defiant face. "Who let this woman past the turnstiles?" Arthur, the senior board vice-president, demanded, his face flushing dark crimson as he adjusted his silk tie. "Security, clear the foyer immediately!" "Are you the man who signed off on freezing Lin Eco-Packaging’s accounts at six o'clock this morning?" Maya demanded, ignoring Arthur entirely and stepping straight into Julian’s personal space. The sharp scent of burnt paper pulp and cold rain on her clothes clashed directly with the lobby’s expensive cedar perfume. "A thirty-thousand-dollar micro-loan. Your legal team bought it out yesterday and invoked a predatory acceleration clause before my workers even opened the workshop doors." Julian’s brow furrowed slightly, his voice dropping into a low, controlled register. "Lin Packaging?" "You froze my operating funds," Maya said, her voice ringing across the silent, cathedral-like lobby. "You froze my payroll. Right now, four people who depend on me to feed their families are standing on a freezing factory floor, working on time they won't get paid for because an eight-billion-dollar corporation decided to execute an automated cash grab." Arthur stepped forward, sneering. "Young lady, Vance Logistics acquires thousands of secondary debt portfolios weekly through automated risk models. We don't track micro-vendors. Take your temper tantrum to customer service on the lower level." "I’m not talking to customer service," Maya spat, her chest heaving as she held Julian’s unblinking gaze. "I’m talking to the man whose name is carved on the front of the building. My foster mother built that business with her bare hands before she died. If you want to seize our machinery to satisfy thirty thousand dollars, come down to the floor and take it yourself. But don't hide up on the sixtieth floor behind algorithms while real people starve." The entire lobby fell dead silent. High-end executives paused near the elevators, staring. The guard reached out to grab Maya’s shoulder, but Julian raised a single, quiet hand. "Stand down, Thomas," Julian commanded softly. He took a slow, deliberate step toward Maya, separating himself from his protective circle of executives. He looked at her—really looked at her—noticing the deep shadow of fatigue beneath her dark eyes and the absolute, terrifying absence of fear in her posture. "Arthur," Julian said calmly, without turning around. "What?" the older man bristled. "Cancel the board briefing with the portfolio committee." "You can't be serious!" Arthur shouted, stepping forward. "The directors from London are on the secure line right now!" "Tell them the meeting is rescheduled," Julian said smoothly. He turned his full attention back to Maya, gesturing toward his private brass elevator cabin. "Ms. Lin, my office is on the sixty-second floor. We are going to resolve this right now." Ten minutes later, inside the vast, glass-walled executive suite overlooking the rain-draped skyline, Julian didn't offer her a seat. He walked straight behind his mahogany desk, pulled up her company's digital file on a thin glass tablet, and tapped the screen to close it. "I am not going to unfreeze your loan, Ms. Lin," Julian said, his grey eyes fixed on hers. Maya’s breath hitched, her hands balling into tight fists inside her coat pockets. "Then you just ruined four lives." "I'm not unfreezing the loan because I am wiping the debt out entirely," Julian corrected quietly. He leaned forward across the dark wood, resting his hands on the desk. "Vance Logistics will clear your thirty-thousand-dollar balance today and inject two hundred thousand dollars in direct capital into your startup. In exchange, you move into this building today as my chief sustainability consultant." Maya stared at him, stunned into silence. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she tried to process the absurdity of the offer. "Why would you make a proposal like that to someone who just ambushed you in your own lobby?" "Because every executive in this building lies to me to protect their seat," Julian said, his voice dropping into an intense, quiet rumble. "You told me the brutal truth in ten seconds. I need someone who isn't afraid of my board." Maya swallowed hard, her chin lifting as she prepared to demand terms. But before she could speak, the heavy double walnut doors of the office burst open. Arthur stood in the doorway, holding a buzzing tablet, his face drained of all color. "Julian, turn on the news," Arthur said, his voice shaking with restrained panic. "Now." Julian grabbed the remote on his desk and clicked the wall display. A breaking news banner flashed across the screen in bold red letters: MASSIVE ARSON AT 4TH STREET LOGISTICS WAREHOUSE; LIN ECO-PACKAGING OWNER UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR INSURANCE FRAUD Maya’s blood ran cold as a live camera shot filled the screen—showing her partner warehouse completely engulfed in roaring, uncontrollable orange flames, black smoke billowing into the grey morning sky. Before she could process the image, her phone chimed in her pocket with an incoming text from an unknown number: Walk away from Julian Vance today, or the next fire will be at your home.
