Chapter 1 of the Gem
It was a bright and sunny day as Jacey was walking around in search of her cat. She decided to go out to look for her cat because the cat was her last family besides her father. Scared that the cat had been harmed, she ran and ran and ran on all the streets her eyes could see. After all the searching, she still could not find her cat she decided to take a quick break. While she was sitting on the walkway by the street, she heard a news reporter on the television belonging to her neighbour. He was saying that there was a sudden outbreak of diseases in the neighbourhood that all the residents should stay in their homes. He later said that the disease can kill all living once it enters their system or corrupts their immune system. Upon hearing this, Jacey got up and ran to every house in the neighbourhood, asking for her cat. She searched the whole morning and afternoon but decided not to give up. She stopped by her house for a quick meal, but she heard her cat's cry near the front gate, so she decided to stop and listen very well. She followed the cry and ended up finding her cat lying on the floor with a broken leg. Upon finding her cat, she quickly entered the house to tell her dad, but he was nowhere to be found. She checked the hall, lavatory, bedroom, and eventually found him. Unfortunately, he was lying on the floor with blood all over his chest. He was not breathing, and he was just lying on the floor lifelessly. She did not know what to do, so she tried to wake him up, for she thought he was pranking her, but he still showed no sign of life. She remembered watching a video on one of the community's computer monitors where a medic applied pressure to a blood wound of a victim in order to stop the flow of the blood. After watching this, Jacey looked all over the house for a rag, old cloth, or any fabric she could find. She eventually found an old cloth in her room and quickly ran to her father with it. She then knelt down and used the cloth to apply pressure on the wounds to stop the blood from flowing. When she saw it was not working, she prayed and prayed and prayed to God to give her father life, but her father was still lifeless. She did not give up hope but kept praying. Scared for her father's life, she kept praying and praying, but he did not wake up. She then decided to pour cold water on her dad's face, but still, he did not wake up. She could not believe what was before her eyes, so she cried so much her eyes started to ache, but she still kept crying.
She called her father's sister on her dad's phone, but she could not reach her aunt. She kept trying and trying and trying, but still, the call did not go through. She then called all the numbers on her dad's phone, but no one answered the call. Exhausted and confused, she just sat by her father's lifeless body. She then ran to the nearest medical facility nearby and asked of their prices, but the nurse told her to bring the patient first. She ran back home and tried carrying him, but she fell many times but still decided to keep going. She then reached the door and looked for a taxi to pick. She eventually found one after about 15 minutes. She quickly carried her dad into the taxi and told the driver where they were headed. He mentioned the fee as she entered the car to sit down, but the price was very, very high, but she had no choice because she had to send her dad to the hospital. Upon reaching the hospital, she got out of the car and rushed her dad into the hospital to the nurse. She forgot to pay, so the driver decided to enter the hospital, and he created a big scene there, saying the girl was poor and she was trying to scam him. This left the girl feeling embarrassed as the man was not entirely lying. The doctor heard the noise from his office and quickly ran out to stop the man, but he got punched by the driver in the process. He was bleeding from his lip but told the driver he would pay the girl's fee. The driver then stopped making noise and left the hospital after receiving the car fee.She then thanked the doctor so much and left the father in their care and left in search of money.
In her search for money, she tried to take on a job. She went to nearby food vendors, other hospitals, and schools asking for job openings. Unfortunately, not even a single one of all the places she had been to had a job opening as the staff opening was full. She then went to the salon and asked for a job but could not get hired, for she was below 18 years of age. She begged the workers, but they had no power over it. They told her that it was up to the boss to hire her or not as he set the age limit for employment. She broke down in tears while going back to the hospital. Upon her arrival, she asked the nurse how her father was doing, but the nurse pretended not to hear a single word. She decided to sit down and wait for the doctor to come. He came out after about 5 minutes and told the girl that her father had passed away the minute she entered the hospital.
Out of confusion, she cried and screamed so loudly that the patients had started complaining. Devastated, she left the hospital with a sad face as she had lost both her father and was left with her cat. When she reached her house, she heard the cat still crying and decided to carry it into the house and treat it. Afterwards, she fed it with some tuna and spaghetti as that was the last food left in the house. After being stressed, she decided to take a nap with the cat inside. This was because they never left the cat outside in the night. She woke up to the sound of a gunfight. She checked the alarm clock and saw that it was fifty nine minutes past one o'clock. She decided to take a peek through the windows and saw countless men firing at one another. One of the men eventually came knocking on the door as he had been shot by another man. The girl ignored the knocking on the door for the first and second time but could not ignore it the third time. She decided to open the door and gave the man the last bottle of water in the house.
Immediately, the man entered the house. He fell on the floor panting for air as he had almost been choked to death by one of the men outside. After drinking the water, the man opened the door and went to continue the gunfight. Jacey opened her mouth in surprise as she asked herself what kind of person chooses to fight over comfortability.
While she was watching the gun fight, her eyelids became heavy, and she gradually fell asleep.
When she opened the door, she saw the man standing there. He looked like he was about to knock. She let him in. The man sat on one of the chairs in the hall of the house.
