Chapter 30Rocco sat on the edge of the mossy embankment, staring out at the shimmering surface of Lake Champlain. In the distance, skidoo and sailboats glided across the tranquil, high waters. Seagulls soared across a bright sunny sky, cloudless on this perfect picture day. He snapped a few shots of the picturesque landscape, angling the Canon camera he got for himself last year for his birthday. It’d come in handy, sooner or later, he thought, turning it sideways, and zooming in on a twenty-something male, bare-chested student water skiing a hundred feet out. Rocco stood to get a better photo, clicking the camera at a rapid clip, hearing the roar of the boat’s engine revving out of distance, steering in the direction of the Lake Champlain Bridge, arcing toward Vermont.
