Chapter 1
Caroline The rain continues to pound down on me as I try to run for cover. She left me. My friend totally left me for dead! Ok, maybe I'm being a bit dramatic, she didn't leave me for dead. She left me at the stupid party I didn't even want to go to in the first place. So here I am walking home in the pouring rain because I didn't have a ride home. I'd been walking for a total of 10 minutes when the rain started. I spotted a busstop not far from me and quickly jogged over to it. I take a seat on the luckily dry bench and catch my breath. My cell chimes with a message from my "bestie". Sammy: Hey girl! Tony was all over me, we've gone to his place for the night ;) Pls don't be mad! Love you! Great. I was soaking wet, the rain wasn't going to stop anytime soon, I had 3% battery left on my phone and about a 15 minute walk to my dorm. This is so not how I saw my night- My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps. I quickly glanced up through my lashes and saw a figure in the rain. Please just walk past, please just walk past! I thought to myself. But I had no such luck, a gravely voice called out to me as the man came to a stop a few feet away. "Hey pretty lady, whatya doing all alone in this part of town in the middle of the night?" he slurred. I didn't reply. I didn't even move. "You know", he said, "It's not safe for such a pretty girl to be by herself out here." "I have a boyfriend", I lied, "He'll be here any minute to pick me up". The man stepped closer and I could smell the stench of alcohol on his breath. "Don't worry, I'll keep you company while you wait. I'll keep you nice and warm too." he whispered. I jumped up from my seat ready to run when his hand snaked out and gripped my wrist. I felt something cold touch the base of my neck. "Scream and I'll slit this pretty little throat of yours, girl." the man threatened. My breathing was heavy as I struggled to stay calm, the icy fingers of fear trailed down my spine. Maybe I'll be lucky and he'll just kill me, please let that be all! The man pushed me against the side of the busstop, the knife digging into my throat and I felt a drop of blood trickle down. When I felt his dirty hand grope me over my jeans I let out a blood curdling scream. Then I felt a blinding pain on the side of my face as the man hit me. I braced myself for another hit, but his weight was pulled off me in a flash. My legs gave out and I fell to my knees on the cold wet ground and looked up to the scene infront of me. A mountain of a man threw my attacker onto the ground with a strength that didn't seem humanly possible and started laying punches into him. My rescuer was easily three times the size of my attacker and continued his assualt even though his opponents face was bloodied and battered. This seemed to go on forever until I let out a whimper. The giant man glanced my way as a growl escaped his throat. His dark eyes softened as his gaze fell upon my face and his hands released the now still body on the sidewalk. He carefully made his way towards me with his hands up in surrender. "Hey, are you okay? Looks like he did a number on your face. I'm just going to get a bit closer to have a look at you, okay?" his voice was deep and I could tell he was trying to speak softly not to frighten me. I nodded weakly, I didn't really have much choice. Now that all the chaos had subsided, I could feel my face throbbing where the man had hit me. "I'm Axel, can you tell me your name?" he gently probed. "Caroline." I whispered. His reply was gentle, "Alright Caroline, lets get you set up on the bench here." Axel gently gripped my arms and practically picked me up onto the bench. He used his thumb and forefinger to lift my face towards him. Axel sucked in a breath as he saw what I assumed to be my bruised face. "That busted lip won't need stitches but it does need to be disinfected and that cheek needs to be iced," he looked concerned as he assessed my injuries. Axel looked into my eyes as he asked, "Do you have anyone to call or come pick you up?" My silence must have been answer enough as he growled and gripped his hair. I shrunk back, unsure of his reaction. "No, no don't be scared," he whispered, "I just can't believe there isn't a single person out there who can look out for you. My house isn't far, come with me and we'll get you patched up." My initial instict was to say No way in hell buddy, stranger danger!!! But he did save me from my attacker and I had this unexplainable pull towards him. I meekly nodded my agreement. As I tried to stand, my legs gave out but before I could hit the ground, strong arms wrapped around me. "Let's take it easy, yeah little one?" Axel murmured as he carried me in his arms towards the truck parked next to the curb that I didn't even notice before now. I let Axel carry me to his huge truck and he gently placed me in the passenger seat. As he rounded the truck to effortlessly climb into his seat, I couldn't help but stare at him. Axel was huge, his tight black t-shirt did nothing to hide those big rippling muscles. His dark hair was slightly ruffled and just long enough to run your hands- woah calm down girl! This man was just being nice and saved me, yet here I am ogling him like I want to jump his bones! He looked at me in a knowing manner as he started his truck. Great Caroline! He totally knows you were eye f*****g him! Axel carefully pulled onto the road and started the drive home. The attacker laying on the sidewalk, forgotten. Looking over to Axel's big hands on the steering wheel, I took note of the broken skin on his knuckles and instantly felt guilty. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat and whispered, "Thank you for saving me Axel". "Hey now little one, don't worry about that. I'm glad I was there to help," Axel flashed a gentle smile at me. My head pounded, so I tucked my feet underneath my body and leaned my head against the window. I must have drifted to sleep, because when I woke Axel was by the passenger side door gently lifting me from the seat. I wrapped my arms around his neck as he carried me to his cabin style home. His body was big and warm, I immediately felt safe in his strong arms.
