The Announcement
Olivia Hayes stood quietly in front of the tall mirror in her bedroom, looking at her reflection but not really taking it in. The gentle gold light in the room brought out every detail of her look the tight black dress, the perfectly done makeup, and the expensive diamond earrings that hung softly from her ears. Everything about her looked perfect. Exactly how her father liked it. Perfect daughter. Perfect image. Perfect future. Beneath the beauty and elegance lay a woman quietly drowning in expectations she never sought. A gentle knock echoed as the maid cautiously entered the room. “Miss Olivia, your father is waiting downstairs.” Olivia exhaled quietly. “I’ll be there.” The maid nodded and left. As soon as the door shut, Olivia grabbed her phone from the vanity table. The moment Xavier’s name showed up on her screen, the tight feeling in her chest began to loosen a little. Xavier. A small smile touched her lips immediately. “I miss you already,” his message read. Her heart softened instantly. Unlike the chilly place she was raised in, Xavier made everything feel easier. Real. Peaceful. He truly admired her for who she was, without ever letting her family name influence his feelings. His love was rooted in her personality, her kindness, and the way she made him feel, not in any external factors or social standing. “Not for long,” Olivia typed back quickly. “I’ll call you later.” A reply came almost immediately. “I love you.” Olivia smiled despite herself. “I love you too.” She swiftly locked her phone and took a deep breath before stepping out of the room. The Hayes mansion was huge, with marble floors that gleamed under the light, crystal chandeliers hanging from the high ceilings, and expensive artwork decorating every wall. There was a silence in the house that never felt right, as if it carried a weight that pressed down on you the moment you stepped inside. Growing up, it never really felt like home. It felt more like a place designed to look good. As Olivia made her way downstairs, she could hear faint voices coming from the dining hall. Wealthy guests had already arrived: business associates, investors, and family friends. People her father wanted to impress. As Olivia walked into the dining hall, many people looked in her direction. “Olivia,” someone greeted warmly. “You look beautiful tonight.” She kept forcing herself to smile politely as she walked towards the table. Then she saw him. Ryan Monroe. Sitting quietly next to his father, wearing a neatly fitted black suit, Ryan appeared exactly as people had come to expect: a strong and capable heir to the family’s legacy. Tall, handsome, composed, intimidating without even trying. His hazel eyes slowly rose to meet hers. And stayed there. Olivia immediately looked away. She really didn’t like the way Ryan used to stare at her, as if she was already his and there was nothing she could do about it. “Finally,” Richard Hayes said firmly from the head of the table. “Take your seat.” Olivia sat quietly next to her father as the servants circled around, carefully pouring wine into the crystal glasses. Scott Monroe beamed with pride as he looked across the table. “Olivia has only gotten more beautiful over the years.” Richard gave a single nod. “She does a great job representing our family.” Olivia remained silent. Next to Scott was Ryan, who remained as calm as ever, hardly saying a word. Yet she could sense his gaze continually shifting toward her every few moments. It irritated her. The Monroe and Hayes families had been sharing power for many decades. Both families had companies worth billions of dollars throughout the United States: hotels, oil firms, real estate, and technology. Their names alone carried influence. And because of that, everything in their world centered on one thing: legacy. Olivia grew up hearing a lot of talk about power, reputation, and growing the business, but her own dreams were never really considered or given any attention at all. Dinner kept going with talks about investments and future projects, but Olivia didn’t eat much of her food. She quietly looked at her phone under the table. A new message from Xavier appeared. “When are you leaving?” Olivia typed quickly. “Soon, hopefully.” Before she could lock the screen, a deep voice suddenly spoke beside her. “Busy?” She looked up sharply. Ryan. Olivia immediately locked her phone. “No.” Ryan’s gaze stayed on her for a moment before he settled back into his chair once more. “You’ve been quiet tonight,” he said calmly. Olivia forced a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Maybe because I’m surrounded by businessmen who spend hours talking about numbers.” A faint smirk almost touched Ryan’s lips. “You always hated these dinners.” “Because they’re exhausting.” Before Ryan had a chance to reply, Richard Hayes abruptly set his wine glass down. The sound immediately drew everyone’s attention. “I believe tonight is the ideal moment to officially share the announcement.” Olivia frowned slightly. Scott Monroe smiled instantly. Ryan’s face stayed peaceful, but there was a quiet shift in the way he held himself. Olivia noticed. Richard Hayes rose slowly, effortlessly drawing everyone’s gaze and holding it with a quiet but undeniable presence. “As everyone here is aware,” he started with assurance, “the Hayes and Monroe families have been working together to build huge success for more than thirty years.” Guests nodded in agreement. Scott Monroe proudly noted, “Their friendship has always been more than just a business relationship.” Richard smiled slightly before continuing. “Long ago, Scott and I vowed to bring our families together forever.” Olivia’s stomach tightened instantly. Something felt wrong. Very wrong. Richard finally looked directly at the guests. “I am excited to officially share the news of my daughter, Olivia Hayes, getting engaged to Ryan Monroe.” The room erupted into applause immediately. Olivia froze completely. Her ears rang. For a moment, she really believed she had heard something wrong. Then people began congratulating them, smiling and cheering. Reality crashed into her chest violently. “What?” she whispered. Her dad gave her a calm look. “The engagement party is scheduled soon.” Olivia slowly turned toward Ryan. He looked completely calm. Too calm. And that’s when realization hit her. “You knew about this?” Ryan held her gaze steadily. “Yes.” The betrayal cut through her instantly. “You knew?” she repeated in disbelief. “I found out recently,” he answered quietly. Olivia stood abruptly from her chair. The entire room fell silent. “You cannot be serious.” Richard Hayes’ face stiffened right away. “Sit down, Olivia.” “No.” The single word shocked everyone. Richard’s tone turned more severe. “You’re bringing shame to this family.” Olivia laughed bitterly. “Embarrassing the family? You just revealed my marriage as if it was a business deal.” Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances. Scott Monroe took a deep breath and spoke gently. “Olivia, perhaps we should talk in a more private setting.” “No,” Olivia snapped. “Since everyone was invited to hear about my future, they can hear this too.” Richard Hayes’ jaw tightened. “This marriage secures our families’ legacy.” Olivia met his gaze head-on. “So that’s all I am to you? A contract?” “Watch your tone.” “No, Dad. You watch yours,” her voice trembled with feeling. “You can’t decide who I spend the rest of my life with.” Ryan finally stood up slowly. “Olivia…” She turned sharply toward him. “And you,” she said, her voice filled with pain, “you sat here and let this happen.” Ryan kept his expression calm, but his eyes showed a little warmth. “I didn’t force this.” “But you accepted it.” Silence filled the room. Olivia felt her chest constrict with a sharp pain as Xavier’s face came vividly to her mind. She loved Xavier. Not Ryan. Never Ryan. She suddenly confessed, “I already love someone else.” The words landed like a bomb. Complete silence followed. Richard Hayes looked furious. Scott Monroe looked shocked. Several guests began whispering quietly. But Ryan… Ryan’s face barely changed. Only his clenched jaw gave away the feeling inside. Richard Hayes stood immediately. “Enough.” “No,” Olivia said firmly. “I’m done pretending.” “You will marry Ryan.” “I won’t.” His eyes grew dark with danger. “You don’t grasp how vital this alliance is.” “And you don’t realize that I don’t love him!” The words echoed painfully through the room. Ryan looked at her silently. For the first time, Olivia noticed something flicker behind his calm face. Pain. But it disappeared almost instantly. Richard Hayes leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a more subdued tone. “Who is he?” Olivia hesitated. She realized that bringing up Xavier would only make things worse. But she was so angry that she no longer cared. “His name is Xavier Cole.” The atmosphere changed instantly. Richard looked disgusted. “That mechanic’s son?” “He’s not just—” “He has nothing,” Richard interrupted sharply. “No status. No influence. No future that comes close to what this family stands for.” Olivia felt anger burn inside her. “He loves me.” Richard laughed in a cold way. “Love doesn’t build empires.” Olivia stared at her father in disbelief. For the first time, she genuinely felt a deep, aching truth that was hard to ignore. To him, love meant absolutely nothing. Ryan suddenly spoke quietly. “Olivia.” She looked at him angrily. “If this is about fear…” “It’s not fear,” she interrupted right away. “I don’t want this marriage.” Ryan’s expression remained unreadable. But his next words surprised her completely. “You will eventually.” Olivia stared at him in shock. The confidence in his voice really unsettled her. “No,” she whispered firmly. “I never will.” With that, Olivia picked up her purse and left the dining hall, leaving behind a quiet silence in her wake. As she walked away, she could still sense that Ryan Monroe was watching her
