Chapter Five After sleeping the whole day long, I thought I’d make breakfast for dinner: fried eggs and bacon, sausages, hash browns, beans on toast. Except my parents didn’t have any of that stuff—not even a can of beans. So I drove my father’s truck to the nearest town to load up on sundries. Wow, is food ever expensive in the middle of nowhere. It's cheaper in the city. Images floated through my mind, of Marie packing up to go out west. What do people do with all the food in their cupboards when they’re moving across the country? Eat it? Every last scrap? Or does it end up in the trash? I wonder. By the time I sat down to my full English breakfast, it was nearly 11 at night. I ate too much. Just kept shovelling the foodstuffs until there was nothing left on my plate. Unco
