Chapter Four In the morning, I lit a fire in the pit my parents have out back. I couldn’t sleep, so I went outside at five to do it. Good timing, because the air was still cool atop the night’s blanket of dew. A fire wouldn’t seem so weird if any of the neighbours caught me lighting one. Not that there were neighbours super close by. With one of my mom’s sweaters around my shoulders, I sat in a lawn chair and watched my letter burn. “For you, Scarlet. Have a read and get back to me. It’d be nice to have a friend. Even if she is a ghost.” Suddenly I heard this voice asking, “Who are you?” I nearly s**t myself. When I looked up from the fire, I saw a greasy youth approaching the pit from around the front of the house. He had on a black t-shirt with a pattern I couldn’t make out
