Chapter 4: Learning to Be Human
---
Morning in a Strange World
Eve awoke to the sound of voices downstairs—laughter, clinking dishes, and the hum of conversation. Sunlight streamed through the curtains, casting a golden glow over the unfamiliar bedroom.
Her crimson eyes narrowed.
I despise mornings.
Back in the supernatural realm, she thrived in the dark. The night was her domain. Yet here, she was subjected to human routines, bound to their absurd customs.
Her fingers curled into the sheets as irritation bubbled beneath her skin. She needed to find a way back.
The door creaked open, and she turned sharply.
Dr. Carter stood there, arms crossed. "Good, you’re awake."
Eve remained silent.
He sighed. "Bella made breakfast. You should eat."
"I do not require human sustenance."
Dr. Carter’s gaze was calm but firm. "You do now."
Eve hated that he was right.
Without another word, she slid out of bed and followed him downstairs.

Breakfast with Humans
The dining room was filled with the scent of food—eggs, toast, coffee. It was foreign yet oddly… warm.
Bella sat at the table, scrolling through her phone, while Aiden leaned back in his chair, chewing lazily on a piece of toast.
Aiden’s blue eyes flickered toward Eve as she entered. "Look who finally decided to join us."
Eve ignored him and sat stiffly at the table.
Bella pushed a plate toward her. "I didn’t know what you liked, so just eat whatever."
Eve stared at the food. She had once dined on the finest blood in the supernatural world. Now she was expected to eat this?
Still, she picked up the fork and took a small bite. The taste was… strange. Not unpleasant, but unfamiliar. She forced herself to chew and swallow with minimal reaction.
Dr. Carter watched her closely. "Not bad, right?"
Eve set the fork down. "It is edible."
Aiden smirked. "Wow. Such high praise."
Bella snickered. "You eat like you’re being tortured."
Eve shot them both a sharp glance.
Aiden leaned forward, resting his chin on his hand. "So, what’s your deal, anyway? You barely talk. You don’t seem impressed by anything. You act like some kind of royalty."
Silence.
Eve met his gaze, her voice steady. "Perhaps because I am."
Aiden raised an eyebrow. "Oh? You a princess or something?"
Eve’s lips curled slightly. "Something like that."
Bella rolled her eyes. "Okay, ‘Your Highness,’ just eat your food."
Eve exhaled slowly. Humans were exhausting.

The Decision
After breakfast, Dr. Carter folded his hands on the table. "Eve, we need to talk."
Eve frowned. "About?"
"You need to start going to school."
Silence.
Eve stared at him as if he had lost his mind. "No."
Dr. Carter sighed. "You look like a teenager. If you want to blend in, you need to go."
Eve’s jaw clenched. "I do not intend to stay here long."
"You don’t know how long it will take to find a way back," he said patiently. "You need to adapt."
Eve hated that he was making sense.
She exhaled slowly. "...Fine."
Aiden grinned. "Oh, this is gonna be fun."
Bella smirked. "I can’t wait to see you deal with high school drama."
Eve ignored them. This was only temporary.

The First Day of High School
The next morning, Eve stood before the mirror, her reflection unfamiliar.
The uniform—white blouse, dark pleated skirt, knee-high socks—felt wrong. It was plain. Ordinary. Human.
Bella leaned against the doorway, smirking. "You look cute."
Eve shot her a glare. "Do not patronize me."
Bella laughed. "Relax, Queen of Darkness. You’ll survive one day of high school."
Eve highly doubted that.
---
Arrival at Hillcrest High
The moment she stepped onto school grounds, she knew she didn’t belong.
The halls were crowded with students—talking, laughing, moving in packs. The scent of sweat, ink, and cheap perfume filled the air.
So this is how humans live.
Bella walked beside her, sipping from a coffee cup. "Alright, here’s the deal. Stick with me, don’t talk to weirdos, and avoid the popular kids unless you want drama."
Eve frowned. "I do not require guidance."
"Yeah, yeah. Just don’t freak people out, okay?"
Before Eve could respond, a loud voice called out.
"Bella! There you are!"
A blonde girl rushed toward them, grinning. "You weren’t answering my texts!"
Bella groaned. "Hope, I texted you back ten minutes ago."
Then Hope’s eyes landed on Eve—and froze.
Eve tensed. There was something… different about this girl.
Hope’s eyes widened. "Oh my god. You’re new, aren’t you?!"
Eve hesitated. "...Yes."
Hope beamed. "I knew it! You have that ‘mysterious outsider’ vibe! Are you from another country? Do you secretly have powers? Are you hiding from an evil organization?"
Eve blinked. What?
Bella sighed. "Hope, please don’t start with your supernatural theories."
Hope gasped. "It’s not a theory! I’m telling you, supernatural beings are real!"
Eve’s breath caught.
Her crimson eyes locked onto Hope, a flicker of intrigue sparking in her mind.
This girl believes in supernaturals.
A slow smile formed on Eve’s lips.
Interesting.
For the first time since arriving in this world, she saw an opportunity.

Classroom Tension
The classroom was noisy when they arrived. Eve ignored the stares, walking gracefully to an empty seat by the window.
As soon as she sat, someone slid into the seat beside her.
Damon.
The moment Eve met his gaze, she knew exactly what type of person he was.
Tall. Confident. Handsome. The type who was used to attention.
He smirked. "So, you’re the new girl."
Eve didn’t answer.
Damon leaned in slightly. "You’re different from the others. What’s your name?"
"Eve."
His smirk widened. "I like it. You don’t talk much, do you?"
"I speak when necessary."
Damon chuckled. "Mysterious. I like that."
Eve resisted the urge to roll her eyes. She had dealt with kings and warlords. This boy was nothing.
Hope leaned over from the other side. "Damon, don’t scare her!"
Damon smirked. "Relax, Hope. Just making conversation."
Eve’s gaze flickered between them. Hope was friendly. Damon was persistent.
This could become troublesome.
