Chapter 12: A Terrifying Discovery
The weekend trip was supposed to be a break from the ordinary—a chance for Eve to experience more of human life and bond with the Carter family. But deep down, she had never fully relaxed.
There was always a part of her that remained alert, a predator constantly surveying her surroundings, even when pretending to be an ordinary teenage girl.
And that instinct?
It was screaming at her tonight.
---
A Cold Wind and a Shadow in the Dark
Eve lay awake in bed, staring at the wooden ceiling of the cabin. The wind outside whistled through the trees, but something about it felt… off.
A shift in the air. A presence.
Then, a sound.
A low, dragging scrape against the side of the cabin.
Eve’s eyes narrowed. It was too rhythmic to be a random branch against the wood.
Silently, she slipped out of bed and crossed the room, parting the curtain just enough to see into the night.
The trees swayed in the wind, casting long, shifting shadows. But one shadow… wasn’t moving with the others.
Her sharp gaze locked onto a tall, still figure standing just at the treeline.
At first, it seemed lifeless, almost like an oddly shaped tree trunk. Then, its eyes opened.
A pair of glowing, predatory red irises flickered in the darkness, staring directly at her.
Eve’s fingers twitched.
Vampire.
Not just any vampire. This one was different.
It tilted its head, sensing something—perhaps recognition. Then, in the blink of an eye, it was gone, vanishing into the woods.
But Eve knew better. It was still there. Watching.

The Scream in the Night
A sudden, loud thud echoed from outside, making the entire cabin tremble.
Then came the scream.
"Dad?!" Bella’s voice rang out, laced with panic.
Eve was already moving. She flung open her door and dashed toward the sound, her supernatural speed making her the first to reach the porch.
Dr. Carter stood frozen, flashlight shaking in his grip. His face was pale, eyes locked on something ahead of him.
Eve followed his gaze—and her stomach clenched.
Deep, jagged claw marks were gouged into the nearest tree trunk. Fresh and dripping.
"What the hell…?" Bella whispered, stepping outside, barefoot, her face pale.
"Get inside," Dr. Carter ordered, his voice unusually firm.
"Dad, what did you see?" Bella asked, gripping his arm.
Dr. Carter swallowed hard. "I… I don’t know. I heard something, came out here, and…" His eyes darted back to the claw marks. "It wasn’t here before. It happened in the last few minutes."
Eve remained silent, but her mind was racing.
Vampires didn’t have claws like werewolves, but some… evolved differently.
This wasn’t just a regular vampire.
It was a feral one.

A Sleepless Night
The Carter family locked every door and window. Even Bella, usually bold and skeptical, sat in tense silence, wrapped in a blanket on the couch.
Eve didn’t sleep.
Instead, she sat by the window, listening.
For hours, the forest remained too quiet. No insects. No night birds.
A predator was near.
Then, at 3:27 AM, the silence shattered.
A low, guttural growl echoed from deep within the woods. Too deep. Too unnatural.
Not loud enough to wake the others, but Eve heard it.
She turned her head slightly—just in time to see something tap against the glass.
Once.
Twice.
Slow. Deliberate.
Her gaze flicked to the window.
A clawed, bloodstained hand hovered there, fingers barely brushing the glass—before retreating into the night.
Eve’s grip on the windowsill tightened.
They were hunting.
And now, they knew she was here.
---
Morning Comes, But the Fear Remains
By sunrise, the unnatural stillness lifted, and the usual morning sounds returned.
But Eve could still feel it. The presence. The lingering danger.
As they packed the car, Dr. Carter tried to reassure Bella and Mrs. Carter. "It was probably just an animal."
Bella scoffed, arms crossed. "Since when do bears leave claw marks like that?"
Mrs. Carter remained quiet, her worried gaze flickering toward the woods.
Eve, standing behind them, cast one last glance at the trees.
In daylight, everything looked normal. Peaceful.
But she knew the truth.
And so did they.
