Chapter 6: Whispers of the Unknown --- A Shift in the Air Eve had sensed something. A flicker of supernatural energy. Faint, but unmistakable. For a moment, she stood still in the empty hallway, eyes narrowing. It had been centuries since she felt the need to be cautious, but here—on this strange, mundane world—she did not yet understand the rules. And she refused to be caught off guard. The presence disappeared as quickly as it came, vanishing into the background noise of the school. Her crimson eyes darkened. Something wasn’t right. Just as she was about to investigate, a voice broke through her thoughts. "Eve!" She turned to see Hope practically skipping toward her, eyes gleaming with excitement. "You rejected Damon! That was amazing!" Eve blinked at her. "Was it?" Hope gasped dramatically. "Are you kidding? Damon is like, the guy at Hillcrest. No one—no one—has ever turned him down like that. It was beautiful." Eve shrugged. "He does not interest me." Hope clutched her chest. "So cool. So cold. I love it." Before Eve could reply, Bella appeared, looking irritated. "You," she pointed at Eve, frowning. "Do you have any idea what you've done?" Eve raised a brow. "Enlighten me." "You humiliated Damon in front of everyone," Bella groaned. "And now the entire school is talking about you. Congratulations, you just became even more interesting." Eve exhaled. Humans were exhausting. Hope grinned. "I think it's awesome." Bella shot her a look. "You would." Hope ignored her. "So, Eve, tell me more about yourself! Where did you say you were from again?" Eve paused. "Far away." "Oooh, mysterious!" Hope said, eyes sparkling. "Like… another world kind of far away?" Bella groaned. "Hope, stop. She's not an alien." Hope gasped. "Wait! Are you a runaway princess?" Eve tilted her head, smirking. "In a way," she murmured. Bella groaned louder. "Oh my god. She's encouraging you." Hope practically bounced. "I knew it! There's something special about you, Eve. I can feel it!" Eve’s smirk widened slightly. Hope was entertaining, at least. --- A Warning from the Populars Eve’s amusement didn’t last long. Because as she made her way to her next class, a group of unamused girls blocked her path. Veronica and her entourage. The school’s "queen bee" crossed her arms, eyes sharp. "I don’t think we finished our conversation earlier." Eve sighed internally. This again. "I believe we did." Veronica's eyes darkened. "You don't seem to understand how things work here." Eve tilted her head. "And you do not seem to understand that I do not care." Bella whispered behind her, "Oh no. She's doing the scary thing again." Hope, of course, was eating it up. Veronica’s lips curled. "People who stand out too much? They make enemies. I’d hate for something… unfortunate to happen." Eve laughed. It was a soft, almost amused sound. But underneath it was something dangerous. Veronica flinched. "You are threatening the wrong person," Eve said smoothly. For a moment, the air felt heavier. Something about her presence changed—just slightly. A subtle shift that made the air feel colder, heavier… suffocating. Veronica's bravado wavered, but she quickly masked it with a glare. "We'll see," she muttered, before flipping her hair and walking away. As soon as she was gone, Hope grabbed Eve’s arm. "That. Was. EPIC." Bella groaned. "We’re going to die." --- The Shadow in the Library Later that day, Eve slipped away from the noise of the school and into the library. Books were stacked neatly, and the quiet hum of whispering students filled the air. It was the closest thing to peace she had found here. She traced her fingers over the spines of the books, feeling the worn texture. Human knowledge. Limited, but useful. As she reached for a title, she felt it again. That flicker of supernatural energy. Closer this time. Eve's fingers tensed. Slowly, she turned her head. A shadow moved. She barely caught it—just the briefest shift of something out of place. Then, it was gone. Her eyes narrowed. She was being watched. She placed the book back on the shelf, feigning disinterest, but her mind was already working. Someone at this school was not human. And she was going to find out who. --- End of Chapter A supernatural mystery hinting that Eve is not alone in this school.
